E.A. ELLSWORTH, Former Purdue Bursar is Dead

Edward A. Ellsworth, one of Lafayette's oldest and most highly respected citizens, died at his home, 308 Perrin avenue, at 4:40 o'clock Wednesday afternoon [May 28, 1924]. Death was caused by heart trouble after a long illness.

As bursar of Purdue University, for thirty years, and later, also secretary of the board of trustees of the university, Mr. Ellsworth enjoyed the acquaintance of thousands of Purdue students, besides the wide circle of friends in this city.

    YALE GRADUATE

Mr. Ellsworth was born August 29, 1850, in this city, the son of Henry W. and Mary Elizabeth West Ellsworth. But for a short time in his boyhood, when he lived in Indianapolis, Lafayette has been his residence. After being educated in the public schools of this city, he attended the University of Michigan, and later graduated from Yale University.

He was married November 22, 1876, to Mariem Smith, a sister of the late Dr. J.M. Smith, who was well-known in this city. Mr. Ellsworth's wife preceded him in death last March. To the union were born five children, three sons dying in infancy. Surviving are two daughters, Annie Ellsworth, of this city, with whom he made his home; Ada W. Ellsworth of Chicago; and two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Arthur Stuart, of this city, and Miss Anne F. Ellsworth of New York.

    PROMINENT FIGURE

Mr. Ellsworth served as bursar of Purdue University for thirty years, retiring in 1922. For a number of years previous to his retirement, he was connected with the board of trustees of the university. His long tenure on the campus, and the great number of Purdue students who became acquainted with him while he held the university position will be grieved to hear of his death.

Mr. Ellsworth was a life long member of St. John's Episcopal church of this city.

The funeral, public, will be conducted from the home, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and burial, private, will be in Spring Vale cemetery. Dr. D.E.S. Perry, rector of St. John's church, will be in charge.--Lafayette Journal & Courier - Thu 5/29/1924.
