For many years one of Kokomo's outstanding women, Mrs. Dorothy Kautz Hamp contributed much to the community's religious and cultural life. She was a member of the Tribune family, one of the three daughters of John Arthur Kautz, who owned this newspaper 51 years. In 1948 she and her sisters, Mrs. Kent H. Blacklidge and Mrs. J.D. Ex-owner of Tribune dead at 96

Beulah, Michigan — Cordelia F. Mayfield, 96, Beulah, died Saturday, April 11, 1986, in Benzie County Medical Care Facility, Frankfort at Frankfort.

She was born April 30, 1890 in Kokomo, Indiana, the daughter of John Arthur and Inez (Gillen) Kautz, and was a former partner in ownership of the Kokomo Tribune.

Mayfield moved here from Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1978 and was a member of First Christian Church, Kokomo Morning Musicale and PEO Sisterhood.

She was married to J. Dorsey Forrest, who died in 1930.

Then she married Clyde T. Mayfield, who died in 1978.

Surviving are two daughters, Cecily Williams of Beulah and Cordelia Douset of Great Falls, Virginia; four grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and a step-great-great-grandchild. Three sisters preceded her in death.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Bennett Funeral Home here. The Rev. Forrest Hope will officiate.

Burial will be in Benzonia Township Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.

Secretary of Citizens Gas Company Weds Miss Cordelia Kautz.

J. Dorsey Forrest, secretary and general manager of the Citizens Gas Company, and Miss Cordelia Kautz, daughter of J. A. Kautz, editor of the Gazette Tribune, at Kokomo, Ind., were married in New York, Saturday, according to news which has reached relatives of the bride in Indianapolis.

Miss Kautz is a singer, and went to New York several years ago to study.

Forrest left Indianapolis last week and it was said at his offices today that the time of return was not known there.

The wedding came as a surprise to business associates of Mr. Forrest.

He and Miss Kautz had known each other for many years, according to relatives of the bride.

Mrs. Cornella Allen-Forrest, who was the second wife of Mr. Forrest, obtained what amounted to an annulment of her marriage to him in the Marion county courts recently. The sult was brought on the ground the marrage had been merely a matter of form. Mrs. Cornelia Allen was a sister of Mr. Forrest's first wife and she had lived at the Forrest home,

After the death of first Mrs. Forrest, her sister entered into a marriage contract with Forrest because they desired to occupy the same house.

J. Dorsey Forrest, age sixty-four, an official of the Inter-Lake Iron Corporation, Chicago, a son-in-law of J. A. Kautz, publisher of the Tribune, died at his home, 2222 Orrington Avenue, Evanston, Illinois, at 1 o'clock Friday morning. Death resulted from progressive paralysis, with which Mr. Forrest had been afflicted several months.

Funeral services will be held at the home in Evanston, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Burial will take place in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Monday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Kautz and Mrs. Kent H. Blacklidge, that latter a sister of Mrs. Forrest, left for Evanston early Friday forenoon. They had been expecting the summons as Mr. Forrest had been in a critical condition several days. They received information Thursday evening that the end was approaching.

Mr. Forrest back in his student days in Chicago University, was supply minister for a short period at the Main Street Christian Church here during which time he resided in Kokomo. That was about thirty-five years ago. Later he removed to Indianapolis, where he became a member of the faculty of Butler College, holding the chair of sociology. That connection he maintained for several years.

In 1907, when the Citizens Gas Company of Indianapolis was organized, Mr. Forrest became its general manager serving in that capacity until 1923. For two or three years thereafter he owned and operated a farm near Warrenton, Virginia. In the meantime he formed the Chicago business already mentioned and eventually took up residence in Evanston.

Mr. Forrest was born in Baltimore, Maryland, July 21, 1866, eldest son of Andrew J. and Emily Dorsey Forrest, life-long residents of that city.

Of studious bent from early childhood, he was still a youth when he completed public school studies in Baltimore and entered Hiram College, Ohio. He acquired A.B. and A.M. degrees from that institution. Later work in Chicago University obtained for him a Ph.D. degree.

In 1915 Mr. Forrest was united in marriage with Cordelia Kautz, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Kautz, Kokomo, who with two daughters Cecily, thirteen, and Cordelia, eleven, survives him.

Other survivors are four brothers, William M. Forrest of the University of Virginia, Edwin Forrest of the Baltimore city schools, Charles N. Forrest of Rahlway, New Jersey, and Robert L. Forrest of Annapolis, Maryland.

Possessing a mind of keenness and brilliance, trained and disciplined by study and research, Mr. Forrest was a man of extraordinary intellectual stature. His gift for clear, analytical thinking on any subject to which he addressed himself, whether in the realm of culture or the realm of business, was remarkable. Coupled with this was an unusual power of clarity of expression which made him impressive in both spoken and written discourse.

While predominantly a thinker, Mr. Forrest had social qualities of a high order, and a marked capacity for acquiring and keeping friends. In his home he radiated cheerfulness and always had the interest, affection and understanding of the devoted husband and father.

Those in bereavement have the consolation of countless memories of a character richly gifted and unfailingly tender, high and fine.

The bereavement is the second that has come within the twelve-month to the family of the publisher of the Tribune. Another son-in-law, Kent H. Dr. Clyde Mayfield, retired Kokomo dentist dead at 87

Dr. Clyde Townsend Mayfield, 87, a Kokomo dentist for 40 years and past president of the Indiana State Dental Association, died Monday, Feb. 6, 1978 at 6:30 p.m. in the Town HOuse Retirement Home at Fort Wayne. He had been ill five months.

He was born March 17, 1891, in Charleston, Ind., and went to public school in Royal Center. He graduated from the Louisville School of Dentistry and began practice here in 1924. He retired in the early 1960s.

Dr. Mayfield was elected president of the state dental association in 1950 after serving the association in many capacities. He had been one of its trustees and supervised many of its clinics.

He was a former president and secretary-treasurer of the Howard County and Wabash Valley Dental societies and had held all the offices in the Northern Indiana Dental Society.

He was a member of the American Denture Society, the American Academy for Plastics Research, the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the Federation Dentaire Internationale. He also held membership in the Chicago and Indianapolis Dental societies.

His parent were Marcellus and Laura Townsend Mayfield, and his father was a physician here.

Dr. Mayfield was a past trustee of Grace United Methodist Church, a member of the Kokomo Chamber of Commerce and the Kokomo Country Club, a Shriner and a Scottish Rite Mason. In 1965 he received a 50-year pin for a half century of membership in the Masonic Lodge.

He was married ro Nellie Grant, who died in 1954.

Afterward he was married to Cordelia Kauts Forest, who survives with four sons: Mark Mayfield of Sarasota, Fla; Richard Mayfield of Santa Fe, N.M.; Don Mayfield of Kokomo; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Private graveside service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery - February 1978 Kokomo Tribune
