Elizabeth Ann "Libby" Blacklidge Newell, 91, passed away at 1:47 P.M. Monday, June 7, 2010 at her home after a brief illness.

She was born Oct 26, 1918 to the late Kent and Bernice (Kaus) Blacklidge.

She married June 7, 2010 Nov. 13 1941 and he preceded her in death


Libby atteneded Tobe Coburn School of Fashion in NYC and graduated from Indiana University. SHe was part owner of the Kokomo Tribune and the Kokomo Opalecent Glass Co. and a founding member of radio station WIOU in Kokomo. As a volunteer, Libby worked many years for the American Red Cross. Her interest in the sport of croquet and her outstanding contributions to the growth and enjoymnet of that sport, resulted in her being recongnized by the United States Croquet Assn.


Survivor inclde he son, Daniel "Drew" Newell of Kokomo, three grandchildren Alexandra Newell, Daniel Newel II and Jonathon Newell. She was preceeded in death bey her parents, her husband and a daughter, Tamara Newell

Private memorial service celebrating the life of Libby, will be held at a later date.

East Point, Fla. - Charles W. "Duke" Newell, 62, former Kokomo (Ind.) attorney, died in a hunting accident, about ? p.m. Saturday, July 26, 1980, near his home.

He had been hunting alone and ell fr oma seawall when his gun dischrged. The Franklin County, Fla. sheriff ruled the death was accidental.

Newel was born May 2, 1918, at Whiting, Ind., the son of Charles H. and Ella (Sunderland) Newell. The family moved to Kokomo and Newell graduated from Kokomo High School.

A WOrld War II Veteran, he served 2 1/2 years over seas with a heavy bombbardment unit of the 8th Air Force in 1942 and was discharged in September 1943.

As a first lieutenant in the Army Reserve, he was recalled in active duty in 1950 when the Korean War broke out and served as legal asstistance and claims officer, chief of the military justice section and assistant staff judge advocate.

He was graduated from Indiana Univeristy Law School in 1941 and began the practive of law in Kokomo with Forest A. Harness and William L. Naftzger. He interrupted his law practice for military service. In 1955 he and Edgar W. Bayliff were assoicated in practice. His most recent professional affiliation was with Robert S. WHitehead. On April ?. 197?, he was admitted to proactice before the U.S. Supreme Court.

In the 1960's he served as public defender in Howard COunty, Ind., He was a past president of the Kokomo Humane Society and was a past president of the Kokomo Humane SOciety and was exalted ruler of Kokomo Elks Lodge in 1958-59 He also was a member of the Izack Walton League and a pst director of Kokomo Country Club. In 1955 her served as president of the Howard COunty Bar Association. He retired from the practice of law and removed to FLordia about six years ago. An acid sportsman, his avo cation was hunting and in 1957 he joined a safari in Africa. He became interested in conservation as a resident of FLordia and was appointed by the governor to be chairman of the Franklin C0unty Z0ning and Planning COmmission.

Another of his interests was writing and he had competed one book and was working on a second.

Newel was married twice. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Blacklidge and his secooond to Ilse Mayfield. Surviving is the wife, his mother, Ella Newell of Kokomo; a son Andrew Newell of Kokomo and a daughter Tamara Newell of New York City.

Private services were held at Middlebrooks Funeral Home of Apalachicola, Fla with burial there.

Charles Warner Newell

EASTPOINT - Charles Warner Newell, 62, of Eastpoint, died Saturday at his home after a brief illness.

He was a native of Whiting, Ind., and had lived in Kokomo, Ind., for several years before moving to Eastpoint a few years ago.

He was a retired attorney and a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

He was a member of the Elks and Moose Lodge of Kokomo and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Ilse Newell of Eastpoint; a son, Andrew Newell of Kokomo; a daughter, Tamara Newell of New York City; his mother, Ella Newell of Kokomo; and two stepsons, Eric Mayfield of Eastpoint and Mark Mayfield of Kokomo.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Apalachicola with cremation following.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
