Edmond P. Severns, Former Conotinental President, Dead

Edmond P. Severns Sr., 76, retired president of Contineatal Steel Corporation, died Tuesday at 7:05 a.m. at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Oct.19. He suffered a stroke at his home, 1403 W. Sycamore St., on that date and did not regain consciousness.

Mr. Severns was born Oct.21, 1896, in Indianapolis, the son of Edmond P. and Leola Kline Severns.

He began his career in the steel industry with the Chapman Price Company of Indianapolis, where he was general sales manager from 1923 to 1927.

On Sept.1, 1928 he moved to Kokomo to become sales manager of the sheet division of Continental Steel after that company was created by the merger of three steel firms. He was elected as a vice president in 1939 became executive vice president in 1954 and president in 1955. In the same year he was named chairman of the company's executive committee and served in that capacity until 1958 when he also became chairman of the board. He retired as president and board chairman in 1962 but continued to serve on the board for a period after that. Altogether, his service with Continental Steel covered 40 years.

Mr. Severns' other business interests included the Coca Cola Bottling Co. of Kokomo, Inc., of which he was chairman; and past director of the Union Bank and Trust Co, and the Kokomo Federal Savings and Loan Association. He was one of the original members of the savings and loan association board, At one lime he was a member of the advisory board of St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, a member of the Steel Prodvets Committee and served as chairman of the Kokomo Redevelopment Commission when it was first formed.

He was a member of the Grave United Methodist Church, the Elks Lodge, the Kokomo Country Club and the Columbia Club of Indianapolis.

On June 4, 1927, he was married to Barbara Beeson in Indianapolis. She survives, together with a son, E. P. Severns Jr. of Kokomo; a daughter, Mrs. Anthony (Diane) Farage, Grand Rapids, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. James (Haale) Yuncker, Indianapolis; and six grandchildren.

The body is at the Ellers Funeral Home, where services will be held Thursday al 2 p.m., with the pastor, Dr. Donald L. Barnes, officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to ! 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The family has asked that memorials be made to the Memorial Fund of the Grace United Methodist Church.

Pallbearers will be Howard C. Williams, Charles C. Shaver, Don P. Button, E.K, Wright, Harold L. Scott and D. James Pickett.

Honorary pallbearers will be William P. Flynn and John Bookwalter of Indianapolis; and Elwood H. Hillis, Robert A. Morrow, S. Chester Land, L.O. Witliams, John W. Miller, Arthur L. Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara. B. Severns, 77, Kokomo, will be held today at 3 p.m. at the Ellers Chapel, Kokomo,

Mrs. Severns, the sister of Mrs. Dorris Perkins of Elwood, died at St. Joseph Hospital, Kokomo, at 9;30 a.m. Friday following an illness of two weeks.

Born April 21, 1900, in Hamilton Co., she was the daughter of Owen and Carrie Sperry Beeson.

In 1927, she married Edmond P. Severns who died in 1972.

Surviving with her sister, are/ one daughter Mrs. Anthony (Diane^ Farage of Grand Rapids, Mich.: a son E. P. Severns Jr. of Kokomo; a brother Fred Beeson of Lake Alfred, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Friends may call at the funeral home this morning prior to the service.

Burial will be made in the Memorial Park Cemetery.
