1930 - Otto Richter

1961 - Mar 1 - Richter Says Ice Fishing Poorest In 50 Years
Otto Richter, who has lived along the West Shore of Lake Maxinkuckee for more than 50 winters and summers, is considered an expert in matters of fishing.

He states that the ice fishing season now in its final stages is by far the poorest he and his friends have experienced in more than 50 years. Moreover, Otto says that good fishing during the regular season is on the decline and that he expects no improvement in the years to come.

Mr. Richter was born in Germany on Christmas Day 80 years ago but seems much younger.

He and his family moved to Peru. when he was a youth and it did not take them long to find out about the wonders of Lake Maxinkuckee.

Before his retirement he was chief of the Peru Fire Department for eight years.

He likes to recall when Peru was the circus capital of the world.

Hia nephew Louis A Richter and his wife had a cottage at 280 W. Shore dr.

If this is the cottage that sits on the curve - there once was a big old tree that sat in front of it. For years a big old tree sat on the corner of the property and very near the roadside. Minnie was lonely in the last years at the cottage and would call David just to talk of the "good old days" and if he was not there would talk to me a little - she just wanted to talk. Minnie - would always call when someone hit "her tree" again and be crying "someone hit my tree again" complaining when will they stop hitting it and that no one cared about it. Often she just called to talk either to me or David. She was a wonderful sweet lady who I never had the pleasure of meeting in person - but she sure could talk your leg off over the phone - and always seemed when she wanted to talk the longest was when you were busy or headed out the door! I remember David and I passing by the cottage of a night and if memory serves me right she had a beautful crystal chandlier that hanged where you could see it glisten through the door or window if open.
