    Charles L Barry - An Indianapolis Attorney noted for his grasp of real prpoperty and probate law, the late Charles L Barry was also an earnest worker on behalf of his chirch, and was created a Kinght of St. Grepory the Great by Pope Pius XII. He was also a leader in the political and organizational life of his region.

    A native of Indianapolis, Mr. arry was born on March 30, 1878, son of Maurice Joseph and Emma Frances (HOlmes) Barry.

    In his early years he attedned grade and parochial schools in Indianapolis and graduated from Shortridge High School in 1897.

    He went on to advanced studies at Indiana Law School, where he graduated and received the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1902. Admitted to the bar of his state, he began practice in Indianapollis and became renowned as an authority on laws governing real estate propert and on probate law.

    Mr. Barry was a member of the American Law-Institute, the American Bar Associaiton, the Indiana State Bar Associaiton and the Indianapolis Bar Association. He held the honorary degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence.

    Mr. Barry was a Democrat and for some years was active in the council of his parth. He served at one time as secretary of the Marion County Democratic Committee. From 1918 to 1926 he served as a member of the Indianapolis Board of Schoo Commissioners, acted as president of his body for one term. For some years he served as deputy prosecutor of Marion County.

    A communicant of St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, Mr. Barry was one of his religion's outstanding figures as a worker in the cause of his faith. At the time of his death, and fore many years preceding, he was president of the Catholic Charities Bureau. IN 1945 he was one of four Indianapolis lay members of the Catholic Church named to the rank of Knight of St. Gregory the Great, a unique honor conferred by the pope. Since 1899 Mr. Barry had been a member of the Knights of Columbus. He had been no less prominent in interfaith activitites than in the work of his own church. He had served as president of the Indianapolis ROund Table of Jews and Christains, and as president of the Interfailth Committee of the Indianapolis Federation of Churches. He was a member of the Indianapolis Interracial Committee.

    Among Mr. Barry's buisiness responisbiilities he was president of the Celtic Saving and Loan Associaion and also served as its legal counsel. He was a member of the Board of College Presideints; and he had held office in the Sons of the American Revolution, being president of it Indiana Society for several terms. He was a member of the Indianapolis Literart Society and the Columbia Club.

    Mr. Barry had had military experience as captain of Company H of the Indiana National Guard.

    On November 25, 1908, in Indianapolis, Charles L. Barry married Anna O'Neill, daughter of John and Mary (Murphy) O'Neill.

    Services Conducted For East Shore resident
      Furneral services for Charles L Barry of Indianapolis and the well known summer resident of Lake Maxinkuckee were conducted last Friday at Indianapolis.

      Mr. Barry was 73, passed away December 17th at St. Vincent's hospital following an illness of three months.

      President of the Celtic Federal Savungs and Loan Association, Mr. Barry had practiced law since 1902.

      He was active in state and county democratic party organization affairs, and was a former president of the Indianapolis literary Society, the Columbia Club, the Knights of Columbus and a former president of the Sons of American Revolution.

      Well known here, where he was a summer resident for 25 years, he was a member of the Lake Maxinkuckee Association as well as the East Shore Lane Association.

      Survivors are the widow Mrs. Anna M. BArry; three sons: Charles Jr., Indianapolis; Robert M., Ft. Worth, Tex, abd Louis H. Barry, Miami, Fla. two daughter: Miss Lucille and Miss Helen Barry both of Indianapolis; two brothers: Dr. M. Joseph BArry and Oscar F. Barry and a sister, Mrs. Helen B. Houghtalen.

      His youngest sone Victor Barry, was killed in Germany Dec. 13, 1944 - Jan 2, 1952 Citizen

      Charles L Barry, 73, Indianapolis attorney and recipient of high honor from Pope Oius XII, died yesterday at St. Vincent's Hospital after three months' illness

      His home was at 3302 Washington Blvd...

      Services will be held at 9:30 am.m. Friday in the Blackwell North Meridan Street Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. in St. Joan Arch Church. Burial will be in Clavary Cemetery.

      Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Amma M. Barry; three sons Charles Bary Jr., Robert M. Barry Ft. Worth, Tex, and Louis H. Barry, Miami, Fla.; two daughters the Misses Lucille and Hellen Barry; two brothers Dr. M. Joseph Barry and Oscar E. Barry; and a sister Mrs. Helen B. Houghtalen.

      The youngest son was killed in military service in Germany Deccember 13, 1944.


    Mr. Barry's death occurred on December 17, 1951. He leaves an exemplary record of professional service, combined with a genuine concern for the promotion of religious faith and fellowship.       Mrs. Anna M. Barry, 82, years old, a former Indianapolis resident and church leader, died yesterday in he Seattle (Wash.) Home>

      The widow of Indianapolis Attorney Charles L. Barry, she was born therr and moved to Seattle in 1960.

      The husband died in 1951.

      She was the first president of the Indianapolis Roan Catholic archdiocesan unit of the National Council of Catholic Women. Mrs. Barry was named to the post by the late Joseph Cardinal Ritter, then archbishop of Indianapolis.

      Later Mrs Barry was instrumental in the establishment of the Newman Club at Butler University, and was a charter member of the club's mothers organization and of the the Gold Star mothers.

      FUneral services will be held at p:30 a.m. Tuesday in Feeney-Kirby Mortuary and at 10 a.m. in St. Joan of Arc Catholic Cemetery.

      Survivors Include three sons Charles L Barry Jr. of Indianapolis, Robert M. Barry of Seattle and Louis J. Barry of Miami, Fla. and two daughters, Miss A. Lucille Barry with the National Red Cross at Tacoma, Wash. and Mrs. Robert J. Jezik of Orange, Calif.

      Mrs. Anna M. Barry, 82, a former Indianapolis and Culver Lake resident, died Saturday in her Seattle (Wash.) home.

      The widow of Indianapolis Attorney Charles L. Barry, she was born in Indianapolis and moved to Seattle in 1960.

      Her husband died in 1951.

      The Charles Barry family was one of the first families to buy property on the East Shore Lane and they occupied this cottage until 1960.

      Survivors include three sons, Charles L. Barry Jr. of IIndianapolis, Robert M. Barry of Seattle and Louis J. Barry of Miami, Fla., and two daughters, Miss A. Lucille Barry, with National Red Cross at Tacoma, Wash., and Mrs. Robert J. Jezik o. Orange, Calif

      6. Victor Jerome 'Jay' Barry born Feb 7, 1925. While serving in the European campaighn with the 104th Infamt during World War II, he was killed in Dermany on December 13, 1944 at or near Merken in the battle to the Roer River. Never married

        Sgt. Victor J. Barry was killed in action Dec 23, 1944 in Germand, according to the War Department notification received by he parnets Tuesday, Jan. 2

        Upon entering the army in August 1942 he was assigned to training at Fort Benning, Ga., as an A.S.T.P., then was transferred to Niagara University in New York. He trained at Camp Carson, Colo., before going overseas in August.

        His division the "Timberwolves" landed in France direct from the United States

        While at Camp Carson, Victor Barry received "Expert Rifleman" and "Expert Infrantryman" awards.

        Early after his arrival overseas he was promoted to private first class and in Novemebr to sergeant.

        He was a graduate of Shortridge High School where he was captain in the R.O.T.C. He was also active in various civic and patriotic organizations among which were the Junior Civic Theater and C.A.R.and he was a member of Saint Joan of Arc Catholic church.

        Survivors besides his parents are three brothers: Charles L. Jr.; Capt. ROmer M. of the Army Air Forces and Cpl. Louis J. of Fitzsimmons General Hospital Denver, Colo and two sisters: Lucille Barry, serving with the American Red Cross at Kennedy General Hospital Memphis, Tenn. and Helen V . Barry, student at Saint Marys of the Woods College.

        Sgt. Barry had spent his summers at Lake Maxinkuckee at the cottage of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles L Barry, since 1924 and had many friends here. - Jan 10 1945 - Citizen
