Edwin Allen Becker

Long time resident, E. Allen Becker passed away Wednesday, November 14 following a brief yet valiant battle against cancer. Becker was born November 2, 1938 to Edwin H. and Mary Lewis Becker in Logansport, Indiana. Following the death of Mary Lewis, Edwin married Margret Wilson. His mother, step-mother and father preceded Becker in death.

As a child, Becker spent summers at Culver , Indiana located on the shores of his beloved Lake Maxinkuckee. After attending Culver Summer Naval School as a member of the band, Becker continued his association with the summer program as part of the Naval Summer School Staff. As an adult, Becker’s association with the greater Culver community was so strong, he and his family moved to the lake for the summer with Becker making the daily commute to Logansport. A community leader in his hometown of Logansport, Becker was also active in the Culver and Lake Maxinkuckee community.

Becker married Judith (Judy) Furry on December 28, 1961, who survives. Last year, the couple commemorated their 50th wedding anniversary with their three children and respective families.

Shortly following his marriage to Judy Furry, despite, or better said, in spite of being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in his mid- twenties, Becker was determined to live a full and active life. At a time when little was known about rheumatoid arthritis and even less was known regarding treatment, Becker refused to accept the ramifications of the disease described and predicted by his doctors early on. From the time of his diagnosis, Becker raised three children, successfully directed and expanded two long-time, well-known family businesses and actively served many organizations in his hometown community of Logansport, Indiana.

Upon retirement from Alpha Industries in 1994, Becker declared Culver as his permanent residence though he chose to escape the harsh winters of Indiana by spending a few months in Venice, Florida. Despite his failing physical condition, Becker was actively involved with sailing programs in the greater Sarasota area as well as the Midwest. At the time of his death, Becker was a Florida resident dividing his time between Venice and Culver , family and friends.

During his lifetime Becker was associated with: Logansport Salvation Army, Logansport YMCA, Logansport Junior Achievement, Grissom Air Force Base Community Council, Maxinkuckee Yacht Club, Culver Summer School Association, Inland Lake Yachting Association, Sigma Nu Fraternity at University of Colorado, and Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Fund. In addition, Becker was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, Culver and also a lifetime member of several community service organizations. Becker was a veteran of the Army National Guard.

Survivors include: son William Allen Becker (Bill), Culver , Indiana, and his children Samantha and Alex; John Furry Becker, his wife, Susan and their children Stuart and Jason as well as his daughter Marylynn (Lynn) Becker DelDuco, her husband Darren and their children Evan, Mia and Nick; brother Nelson (Dixie) and sister MaryAnna Swennumson (Richard); step-sisters Patricia Cleveland, Margret Rothman and Linda Flannery (Dick); step-brother Loyal Wilson (Margret) and many nieces and nephews.
