Harvey, Louisa, and the four children lived in a log house on the southeast s
hore of Maxinkuckee Lake until they built "Maple Gorve House" in 1886.
It was operated as a resort from 1890 to 1915. Its letterhead read: "$5 per week
(rooam and board)".
William did the farming, and hauled the guest's luggage from the train at Culver
to the resort while the guests ame by steamboat to "the longest pier on the lake"!
There was an ice house to supply the refrigeration of that time and all cooking was
done on a wood-fired stove
Louisa and several hired girls did the cooking, laundry, and maid's work without
inside plumbing for 15-25 guests.
Harvey bought a Model T Ford back in 1909.
The telephome enabled him to "broadcast: Edison phonograph music to the Culver telephone
operators on winter unday afternoons.

married Dec 17, 1897 Emma Louisa Adler b. Jan 16 1853 Senaca/Stark County, Ohio d. 18 Dec 1929 Macy,
Indiana BURIAL Masonic Cemetery Culver, Marshall County, Indiana daughter of Johann Nikol Adler
and Maria Magdalena Egelkraut
Emma Lousia, daughter of John and Mary Madfalena Egelkruat Adler, was born in Senaca county, Ohio,
Jannuary 16, 1853
Her German-Lutheran parents came to America from the villafe of Asch, kingdom of Bohoemia. That
region which was the storm center of the protestant reformation. The region of Huss and Luther.
The time of their coming to this land of the free was immediately after the unsuccessful uprising
of the peasants of 1848.
They settled first in Senaca county, Ohio, where they lived only a few years and where the deceased
was born.
When she was only six years of age she moved with her parents to Indiana, locating in Starke county,
a few miles west of Lake Maxinkuckee. Her entire life was spent in this community.
On Decemeber 17, 1871 she was united in marriage with Harvey R. Norris. To this union were born one
daughter and three sons: Mrs. Anna L. Zechiel of Macy, Ind., Dr. A. A. Norris of Elkhart,
Wm. G. Norris of Plymouth and Dr. N. S. Norris of Culver.
Her early life was one of poverty and heart aches, growing out of the Civil was in which her olderst
brother lost his life. The death of her father only a few years later in 1869 added to her sorrow and
also brought added responsibilities
The deceased was converted in her early teens and untied with the Evangelical Association of which she
remained a faithful member to the time of her death. She was a woman of practical ability and great
strength of character, with the courage of her convictions, she feared nothing but evil. She was loyal
to her family, to her church, to her neighbors and the woman's Christain Temmperance Union, all of which
she served with sincere devotion and a true loyality. For many years she taught the primary class in her
home church, after the passing of Mrs. Clara Kline, she became the inspiring leader of the Missionary
society. Few people with such limited educational advantages have wrought such a work as she accomplished
under th blessing og God.
Her husband departed this liife on January 1, 1926, since which time her life has been very lonely. Her
late illness during which she suffered intense pain and agony dates back to that time.
She passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. I. Zechiel of Macy, Indiana, on December 18, 1929 at
the age of 76 years, 11 months and 2 days
She leaves behind to mourn, one daughter, three sons, as names above, eight grandchildren: Allen Norris
Zechiel, Wilmington, Delaware; Pauline Norris Jessup, Philadelphia, Penn; Eva Norris Telkamp, Chicago;
Dr Ernest B Norris Indianapolis; Evelyn Norris Hays, Sturgis Michigan; Wlecome Norris Plymouth; Bonnie
Norris Culver; Four great grandchildren: Leon Norris Zechiel John Norman Zechiel Wilmington Delaware;
John Norris Jessip Philadelphia, Pa.; June Louise Telkamp, Chicago. One brother Wm. H. Adler Maramee,
Oklahoma. One step-brother Wilson Kaley, North Dakota. One step-sister Mrs. Lilly Copp Culver.
There is still a large circle of more distant relatives and may firends who mourn her depature.
Rest sweetly mother dear,
Naught shall disturb th sleep.
The Father's holy will be done
Tho we are left to weep.
Shed not a holy tear.
Why should the heart despair,
The mother spirit hovers near
And whispers, "Meet me There!:
