Zion Church


1885 - The Marmont Congregation had been organized nearly four years previous, on March 11, 1885. Zion was the parent church. The Rev. PETER J. SPANGLER, their pastor of Zion,
became also pastor of the Marmont Charge. The Reformed Church in Culver was built in 1890.

1906 - June 21 - The contract for the red pressed brick for the new Reformed church had been let, and the comber contract was given out this week to Ferrier - Citzen

1906 0 Aug 9 - The bricklaying on the south wall of the new Reformed church is nearly completed

1911 - Sep 7 - Will Beautify the Church
    A contract hase been made with E. Pierre Wainwright of Cincinnati, the artist designer and cartoonist who is spending his summer at the lake, to decorate the interior of the Reformed church. The walls will be done in light brown with conventionalborder of original design in Vandyke brown and high wainsoting in "tiffany", a blend of browns and reds. The ceiling will show panels of icory. The would will be done in oul and at and exceptionaly low price of about $250.

1968- Apr 18 - Rev. Hohman Resigns As Grace Pastor
    After serving the Grace United Church for the past eight years, Rev. Harold Hohman has resigned due to ill health. Rev. Homan is the 14th pastor to serve Grace Church since its founding nearly 75 years ago.

    A native of Nashville, Ill., Rev. Hohman has served churches in Garber, Iowa; Dupo, Ill.; Niles, Mich.; and Benscnville, Ill., before coming to Culver.

    The Hohman's future plans are indefinate at this time. They will be missed by the many friends they have made in Culver.

    1968 - Jul 11 - Plan Reception For Rev. Hohman And His Family

    A n informal reception is being planned for the retiring pastor of Grace United Church of Christ, the Rev. Mr. Harold W. Hohman, and his family, on Sunday, July 14th, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., in the social rooms of the church.

    All friends of the Hohmans are invited to attend.

    Mr. Hohman graduated from Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, Illinois, Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, with a Bachelor of Divinity degree.

    He was ordained to the Christian ministry in his home church, St. Paul's United Church of Christ, at Nashville, Illinois, in 1934, and was assigned to his first congregation in Garber, Iowa.

    Other pastorates were in Dupo, Illinois; Niles Michigan; and Bensenville, Illinois, before coming to Culver in 1960.

    Because of his health, Mr. Hohman resigned from the Culver, pastorate, effective July 9th.

    The Hohmans were married in Ackley, Iowa in 1937, and have three children: Capt. Wayne R. Hohman, with the U.S. Army Medical Reserve Unit, Landstuhl, Germany; Fred W. Hohman, Overland Park, Kansas; and Misa Sheryl Hohman, of Culver.

    The Hohmans plan to making their home in Culver - Citizen


1968 - October 10- Rev. John Krueger conducted his first service as the new minister cf the Grace United Church of Christ

1968 - December 5 - Rev. John H. Krueger was installed as the new minister of the Grace United Church of Christ.

1969 - June 12 Fire Causes Extreme Damage To Grace Church
    Defective wiring in the ceiling of the basement social rooms was believed to have started the estimate d $75,000 fire at Grace United Church of Christ last Friday afternoon.

    According to Fire Chief Dave Burns, heat and smoke went up the stairway from the hall into the sanctuary and blew open the doors of the church at approximatel y 5:15 pm .

    Bible classes had been held in the basement rooms that morning and although people had been working there earlier in the afternoon, no one was in the church when the flire started.

    Rev. John Krueger, pastor of the church, was attending a church conference in Indianapolis at the time of the fire .

    The most extensive damage was caused by smoke and water. One stained glass window in the sanctuary was buckled.

    Except for two Sunday school rooms and the furnace room, the basement of the church is a total loss. Choir robes, books, pianos, and an organ were included in the church's loss.

    Church services this Sunday will be in the form of a famil y worship service and picnic and will be held at the American Legion home west of Culver.

    An announcement will be made next week concerning arrange ments for further worship services.


1988-198_ - Walter Vonderohe

1988 -1993 - Donald Wagner - has served as pastor of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Lebanon, Ill., since 1993, and before that served for five years at Grace United Church of Christ in Culver, Indiana. A second-career pastor, Wagner was a grain and dairy farmer with his father and brother before being called to the ministry in 1980.

2000's - Easterday's Construction installed an elevator in the lobby that serves as access to the basement where their community room is located. Roger Thews Easterday's superintendent on this project; was also a member of the Church and served as our liaison with the Church Building Committee
