AMERICAN UNITED LIFE INSURANCE CO.
One of the identifying landmarks of downtown Indianapolis is the AUL Tower., named
for this major insurance player. American United Life Insurance Co. has been at home
in downtown Indianapolis since 1877, making it perhaps the oldest insurance company
still domiciled in the state. Back then, it was organized to sell policies to Hoosier
members of the Knights of Pythias.
Today, American United Life is licensed to do business in 45 states and the District of
Columbia. The company has almost $5.5 billion in assets, with more than $3.5 billion of
group annuity and pension assets under management.
Jerry D. Semler is chairman, president and CEO of American United Life.
In July, American United Life and cross-town competitor The State Life Insurance Co. announced
a strategic alliance enabling them to share resources while maintaining the flexibility of
individual companies. The two companies would remain separate legal entities but would have
common boards of directors and one CEO; the deal specifies that Semler wo uld be that CEO.
The deal requires approval of State Life policyholders.
Jerry 'Jack' Semler has over 24 years in the aviation industry when he is not at the
controls of the burner of Indy Hot Air’s balloon, 'Chasing Dreams' which was recently
seen over Lake Maxinkuckee on father's Day June 2009 He is flying as a Captain and
instructor/examiner for a Federal Express a worldwide cargo airline, out of Anchorage
Alaska. He has been a homeowner on Lake Maxikuckee/Culver for the last 12 years. He
is owner of Indy Hot Air LLC
