Back then, it was organized to sell policies to Hoosier members of the Knights of Pythias.

Today, American United Life is licensed to do business in 45 states and the District of Columbia. The company has almost $5.5 billion in assets, with more than $3.5 billion of group annuity and pension assets under management.

Jerry D. Semler is chairman, president and CEO of American United Life.

In July, American United Life and cross-town competitor The State Life Insurance Co. announced a strategic alliance enabling them to share resources while maintaining the flexibility of individual companies. The two companies would remain separate legal entities but would have common boards of directors and one CEO; the deal specifies that Semler wo uld be that CEO. The deal requires approval of State Life policyholders.
