Thomas Medbourn
Thomas Medbourn BIRTH 7 Mar 1845 Welford, Daventry District, Northamptonshire, England
DEATH 30 Jan 1908 Culver, Marshall County, Indiana, BURIAL Culver Masonic Cemetery
Culver, Marshall County, Indiana, Thomas was the eldest of seven children born to
Edward
Medbourn and Hannah Lee
The family immigrated to the United States in March of 1854. The crossing took two months,
and near the end of the trip, a meteor ball struck the sailing vessel, burning the sails
and putting a hole in the ship's hull. The way Thomas told the story years later, the
passengers all thought they were about to die. New sails were found, and the ship's pumps
were manned twenty-four-seven for the last three days of the voyage. The family counted
their blessings when they arrived in New York, and were housed by a kindly lady who gave
Thomas his first taste of corn bread.

Mrs. Mary Medbourn Passed Away Friday
Funeral Was Sunday
Death was caused by complication of disease following fracture of hip
Mrs. Mary E. Medbourn, age 77, much loved, and pioneer citizen of Culver, passed away to
her great reward last Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of her daygther Mrs.
Cester Zechiel in Indianapolis
Death was due to complications which set in following an accident in which she
fractured her hip just eleven days before her death. Both children were at her
beside when the end came.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church last Sunday afternnon at
two o'clock by Rev. V. B. Serviews and the body was placed in the final resting place
in the Culver cemtery by the side of her husband who died in 1908.
In spite of the rainy weather last Sunday, the church was filled with Mrs. Medbourn's
friends who wished to pay her a parting tribute.
Pallbearers were J. H. Meredith, S. C. Shilling, C. L. Wiseman, Ed Hawk, A. A. Keen,
Cahs. McGaffey.
Mrs. Medborn had lived in culver for a great many years. She was a charter member of
the methodist church and a constant worker for the cause of christ.
During the past few years she has been spending the winter months with her daughter
in Indianapolis, and living in her own home on South Main street during the summer
months.
Just eleven days before her death she walked upstairs in the home of her daughter. She
was in the bathroom and then started for her room to rest for a while. While in the
hall her limb gave way and she fell to the floor. The fall caused the rfracture of her hip.
Charles, her son, was called from Culver to her bedside. He remained with her for a few
days and allseemed to be getting along as well as could be expected, so her returned to
Culver. But on Wednesday, received a message that her condition seemed to be worse.
Accordingly he hurried to her side and he and his siter, Mrs. Zechiel, were with her until
the end. Medical science as practiced by two leading pysicians of Indianapolis could do
nothing for her.
Mis Medbourn will be much missed in the community. Her Christain character won for her
many friends who will mourn her departure with the family. A complete obituary is printed

Obituary
MAry ELizabeth Medbourn was born in Jennings County, Indiana, January 30, 1846, and
died in Indianapolis, February 20, 1925, at the ager of 77 years.
The Creator loaned a life unito the world that His taks here might be well done and
when this life had toiled out its fruitful years. He took it back unto him into the
great eternity of immortal souls.
DOwn in the driendly hills of SOuthern Indiana, a little girl baby was born in the home
of John Greene and his wife, Nancy Jane. She was the second girl in an ultimate family
of eleven children, - seven girls and four boys. The Greens were an old and mumerous
family in these hills and the little girl grew up among her relatives, and close to
natures heart.
At the age of fifteen, at the very close of the Civil War, the girl child, then grown
to young womanhood, accompanied her father, mother, brothers and sisters to Marshall
county, where all located as farmers on ground near Burr Oak and by good fortune, as
neighbors to the Edward Medbourns, prosperous, Christain Englishmen. The little love
spirit, CUpid, then as now, attended the affairs of the young floks. With special care
he fixed his shaft and watched the young maiden, Mary, and the youn man, Thomas Medbourn,
son of Edward. They did not escape him. As soon as young Thomas made the acquaintance
of the newly arrived Mary Green, his heart was full of love and our young girl of the
southern hills became Mary Medbourn, wife of Thomas Medbourn. And so one June 21, 1866,
began a new family whose ties remained bound by love and affection until the husband and 4
father died, a fine citizen and beloved parent, on the first day of January 1908.
The the family were born eight childrennn - Dorcas, WIllie, Etta, Clara, Elizabeth, Jesse,
Charles and Myrtle.
Only two. however, survived their parents - Charles E. and Myrtle A. But the constant,
tender care and affection of these two made the home beautiful and filled the hearts of
the two parents full of love and gladness.
The same tender heart which nursed the children of the bonded welock, took pity on the
lonley son of a sister. In the year 1901 Lannie and Emma Saygar died suddenly and left
a six year old son, Herman, in a strange land and without a home. Mrs. Medborn took this
son, her nephew, into her home and heart. From then on until her grew to manhood, Herman
was a member of the Medbourn home as much as if he had bee an own son.
For many years, Mary Medbourn has made her home in Culver, where she was a charter member
of the Methodist church and a friend to all as well in need and sorrow as in plenty and
joy. Could it have been said as much of Kings and QUeens the world would have known less
of sorrow.
"I would live in a house by the side of the road And be a friend to man."
Since Mr Medbourn's death, Mrs Medbourn has lived her her daughter and nephew, Herman
Sayger. In recent years, she has spent the cold winter months in Indianapols with her
daughter and son-in-law, - Mr. and Mrs. Chester L Zechiel, and the summer in her own
home in Culver.
It was while living with the Zechiels in Indianapolis that in some manner Mrs. Medbourn
fell and fractured her hip. Fast confinement to her bed followed the accident.
But the spirit born to the free hills of the souhland could not bear up under this fast
confinement. From free and unfettered eternity it came, in a freedom loving and
tender hearted body it grew, and when the body was borken and in agony of pain, back
to free an unfettered eternity it went, there to remain with the God of all.
Besides the son and daughter, Mrs. Medbourn is survived by four grandchildren: DOnan
Louise and Marilyn Maxine,
daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Medbourn, of Culver; and Mary Barbara and Marjory
Rose daughters of Mr. and Mrs Chester L. Zechiel of Indianapolis.
And so the little girl child lived her alloted time through youth, maturity and ripened
old age - useful beautiful, a fullfillment of the Etrnal pledge of happiness to the hones,
diligent, generour soul. - 25 Feb 1925.
