A memorial service for Thelma Scott Hodges, who died Thursday, March 15, in Holy Corss Hospital, Silver Spring, Md., will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Wesley United Methodist Church.

Thelma Hodges, who was known for her knowledge of antiques and involvement in community affairs, was July 31, 1905, in Mexico, Missouri. She moved to Culver with her parents, William Roy Scott and Lillie Mae Duley Scott, two years later at the age of two.

Her parents had worked for the Culver family in Missouri and followed them to this community after they founded the Culver Military Academy. William Roy Scott was in charge of the barracks, and Lillie Mae Scott worked as a domestic for several faculty members.

Thelma Scott attended Culver Elementary and Culver High School, from which she graduated in 1923. She attended Howard University, Washington D. C., and received her bachelor's degree in education there in 1927. She did graduate work at the University of Chicago.

In 1960-75 she taught high school English in Scotland Neck, North Carolina.

She collected antiques and was an authority of antique cut glass and Chinese mud men. She had been the manager of the Country Cousins antique Store on Main Street in downtown Culver and worked at the Collectors at the time of her death. She also taughta class in antiques at Ancilla College, Donaldson.

Mrs. Hodges was active in local politics and had served as president of the Board of Zoning Appeals. She was a Democrat and was active in voter registration.

She was also a member of Supporters To Oppose Pollution, of Delta Sigma Theta public service sorority at Howard University, the League of Women Voters and Wesley United Methodist Church, where she had bee a superintendent of the Primary Department.

On Dec. 20, 1930, she was married in Chicago to Morsell Hodges, who survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Thelma Hodges Moorhead, St. Croix, Virgin Islands; a son, Charles Morsell Hodges, Silver Springs, Maryland; four grandsons: Shelley Alexander Hodges Moorhead, Charles Christopher Moorhead, Charles Morsell Hodges IV, and Jason Scott Hodges; a niece, Antoinette S. Hodges, and several cousins. She had numerous friends in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan communities where she traveled to by antiques.

Private funeral services were held Sunday in the Fleck Funeral Home, Laurel, Md., followed by cremation. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, or the Wesley United Methodist Church Primary Department, and flowers may be brought to the memorial service.

The Rev. Mark Day will officiate. Services well be concluded with burial at Culver Masonic Cemetery.
