Charles Ferrier



Charles and Marjorie Ferrier were both born in Culver. Charles was born December 25, 1911 the son of Clark I. and Clista Easterday) Ferrier.

His grandparents were Rosa and James Oliver Ferrier, who established and operated the J. O Ferrier Lumber Company in Culver for many years; and Susanna and William Samuel Easterday, who served Culver as Funeral Director until his death in 1946.

Charles had on brother, Oliver, who was born in 1906 and died in 1925.

Charles grew up in Culver, swimming in Lake Maxinkuckee in summer and ice sakting on the lake in winter. He began working in summers at the age of 12, driving a delivery truck for the lumber yard. he graduated from Culver High school in 1931 and was a member of the basketball team which went to the Reginal Tourney in 1931, after winning all games in the season for two years.

After attending Prudue university, he worked at the Ferrier Lumber Company until it was sold to settle the J. O. Ferrier Estate. He was then employed at the Easterday Construction Compnay until he started his own cabinet making company from which he retired in 1975.

On March 15, 1936 he was married to Marjorie Hawkins, who was born July 25, 1913, the daqugher of Helga (Johansen) and Elza H. Hawkins. Her grandparents were Mary Ann (Ebling) and Ezra E. Hawkins, life residents of Marshall county [and former owner of 419 S. Main St. property] and Frederickke (Lau) and Rasmus Johansen, who came from Denmark to Chicago, Illinois and later to Starke county. She has one brother Harry T. Hawkins, born August 20, 1909, who resides in LaPorte.

Marjorie also attended Culver High School and graduated in 1931. During her high school years, she worked babysitting and during the summer at Loser Taxi Company. Following graduation she was employed at Culver Military Academy in the filing department until 1948; at the Culver Press, Inc. until 1967; and at McGill Manufacturing company until her retirement in 1981.

In 1948 the Ferrier's built their home at 901 Lake Shore Drive, Culver where the still reside. They are members of the Wesley United Methodist Church. Cahrles is a Past Master of Henry H. Culver Masonic Lodge #617 and is also a member of the South Bend Valley Scottish Rite and the Indpependent Order of Odd felloew Maxinkuckee Lodge #373. Marjorie is a member of the Emily Jane Chapter Order of Eastern Satr.
