George Isaac Babcock

George Isaac Babcock was born July 11, 1916, in the village of Maxinkuckee Union township. His father Ronald 'Budge' Babcock was born in Maxinkuckee July 23, 1885 (died 1958)_ the son of Dr. Isaac Laurence and Laura Ellen Spangler Babcock. His mother, Ida Milliser Babcock, was born near Leiters Ford in Fulton county July 12, 1884 (died 1948), the daughter of George Riley and Cynthia Jane Milliser. His one sister, Gail Babcock married Carl Henderson and had twp children, a daughter Patricia Gail, who is married to Richard Counts and lives in Bradenton, Florida, they have three children. Gail died in 1933 as did her infant son.

George attended Maxinkuckee grade school and graduated from Culver High School in 1935.

I, Fran (Flagg) Babcock, was born in Green township[ J uly 25, 1918, the youngest of ten children of Miner D. Flagg and Anna C. Warner Flagg. I have three sisters and one brother living. I attended Santa Anna, Greene township grade schools and graduated from Culver High School in 1936.

George and I were married in 19136. Our first h year we lives in Flint, Michigan were George worked for General Motors Fisher-Body plant. While there he played basketball for Fisher Body.

Returning to Culver , we lived a short time in the Allegheny House, owned by his parents. George served in World War II with the Army Engineers in Italy. He entered service in 1943 and was medically discharged in 1945.

He then worked for Lakeville Lumber Company, a part of the Hass Organization of South Bend. Later he managed he Marshall County Lumber Company for many years. The Hass Company built the Marshall County Ready Mix Plants at Culver and on Muckshaw Road. He managed these along with the lumber company.

He contracted and built the Culver Military Woodcraft cabins subletting some of the work. He also built two churches and the Beverage building in Plymouth, also houses and buildings in the Culver Area.

After the lumber and concrete company sold, George opened his own business. "Babcock Lumber and Supply Co." in Culver . He enjoyed this venture but was forced to sell due to ill health in 1977.

In 1947 we built our first home, on our 75 acre farm on the corner of Queen and 18B Road in Maxinkuckee. George co uld only farm part of the time but it was relaxation from his busy life. He was a Pioneer in Contour Farming and received an award from the Department of Conservation.

We have two children and four lovely grandchildren. Our son, Ronald Lee lives in Plymouth and works for the Plymouth Police Department. He graduated from the Culver Academy Summer Naval School in 1965, Culver High School in 1966 and Vincennes University and Bethel College.

He entered service in 1969 serving in the Special Forces. While stationed in the East he met and married Pa ula Munroe of Acton, Massachusetts. They have two children: Kelly Marie and Ronald Lee Jr. both students at Lincoln Jr. High School in Plymouth.

Our daughter Mari Yvonne, lives near Buchanan, Michigan. She married Gary Sheets and they have two children: Corey Wayne, five and Amanda Yvonne, three.

George had many hobbies and enjoyed many sports. One of his favorites was trapshooting, in which he won the State Doubles Championship in 1956. He was a life member of the American Trapshooting Association.
