1977 - Oct 27 - The grain elevator was completely destroyed in a four-alarm blaze which Culver,
Monterey, Aubbeenaubbee Township, and Plymouth fire departments fought for hours.
Fire chief Don Overmyer said arson wasn't suspected (likely dry grain combusted in the grain tower) in the 4:30 p.m. fire.
Police tried to keep residents away from the area for fear that nitrate-containing tanks at the rear of the seven-to-eight-story
building might explode (which they didn't), though the intense heat of the huge conflagration kept most at a distance
