Sheila Jean Gilley
(November 20, 1923 - February 29, 2012)


Sheila Jean Gilley (nee Smith), 88 of Flossmoor, IL and the beloved wife of the late George D. Gilley, passed away peacefully on February 29, 2012 at South Suburban Hospital, Hazel Crest, IL.

Sheila was born in Glasgow, Scotland and immigrated to the US at the age of two. Sheila was a graduate of Thornton Township High School and the University of Iowa, summa cum laude. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority as well as a charter member of Chapter JA of the PEO Sisterhood. She taught English for 36 years at both Thornton and H-F High schools and has been a member of Flossmoor Community Church for the past 58 years.

Sheila was the cherished mother of Dennis (Elizabeth) Gilley, FL, Thomas (Linda) Gilley, IL and John Gilley, IL. She also was the dearest grandmother “G.G.” of Craig (Lisa) Gilley, Allison Gilley Russell, Elizabeth (Brian) Payne, Emily (Steve Ratay) Gilley, Merrideth (Steve) Dedo, Kathleen Gilley, Ian Gilley, Margaret Gilley, Hannah Gilley and E. Ryann Gilley. Sheila was the proud great grandmother of Ashton Russell, Connor Gilley, Cameron Gilley and Grace Payne. She was also a dear sister to Douglas (Arlene) Smith.

A memorial service will be held on March 23, 2012 at 3:30 pm at Flossmoor Community Church in Flossmoor, IL. A private burial will be held at Cedar Park in Calumet Park, IL.
