Dr Lowell Joseph Hillis  



Dr. Joseph J. HIllis, 71 2410 Hasty Hyll, died at 11:12 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct 19, 1911 Logansport, he was the son of Joseph E. and Alice Yost Hills. On Oct. 22 1936 he was married to Helen Kunkel who survives.

Appointed Logansport Health Officer by Mayor Ralph Eberts in 1953, he served in that position until 1985, then served as the combined Logansport-Cass County Helath Officer from 1965-1979.

He was a member of the Topton Lodge, No. 33, F and AM; Scottish Rite, Fort Wayne; the Baptist Temple for more than 60 years; Elks Lodge No 66; Alpha Thai Omeg fraternity; and Chapter No 2, Council No. 11 of St. John's COmmandery No. 24.

A regent for the Indiana division for the International College of Surgeons, he was chief of staff at the formert St. Joseph Hospital and at Memorial Hospital several times. He was instrumentatal in the construction of the Indiana University Speehc and hearing home, and was state president of the Indiana Exchange Clubs in 1948-49.

A trustee for the Indiana STate Medical Association 16 years, he walso served on the commission of the Indiana Department of Motor Vechiles eight years.

Graduated from Logansport High Scholl, he was graduate from Indiana University in 1937, served an internship in Indianapolis one year and moved to Logansport in 1938. Surviving with the wife are twp sons Dr. Frederick A. Hillis 301 E. SHandy Lane and Dr. Paul D HIllis 2527 E> Broadway; two daughters Kathyrn L. Hargrove 4511 High St. and Caroline Lopicola Detriot, Mich.; a brother Jay Hillis, Kokomo and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at FIsher Funerl Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Corpening and the Rev. Paul Grant officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Helen Hillis, 98, Logansport, passed away at 11 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, in her residence.

Born Oct. 31, 1913, in Owensboro, Ky., she was Helen Hiiiis the daughter of the late John Howard and Elizabeth “Bessie” Glenn Kunkel.

On OcL 22. 1936, in Indianapolis, she was married to Dr. Lowell J. Hillis. He preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 1982.

A graduate of Washington High School in Indianapolis, Helen was a homemaker. Helen was a longtime member of the Baptist Temple in Logansport. In earlier years she had served as the state treasurer in the Indiana State Medical Auxiliary. She was a former member of the Alpha Mu Chapter of Tri Kappa and the Mothers’ Study C ub. Helen had also served on the Neal Home Board of Directors and the Cass County Children’s Home Board of Directors.

Surviving are two sons. Dr. Paul Hillis and his wife, Kathy, of Logansport, and Dr. Fredrick Hillis and his wife, Shelley, of Culver; two daughters, Kathie Smith and her husband, Carl, of Myrtle Beach, S.C, and Carolyn Lopiccola and her husband, Joseph, of St. Clair Shores, Mich.; nine grandchildren, CWA IV David Hargrove, Kathleen Hargrove France, Amy Hillis Couch, Bryan Hillis, Sarah Hillis Sayers. Erin Hillis Kopplin. Lisa Hillis Miller, Alan Lopiccola and Helen Lopiccola Lipp; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother. Colonel John Howard Kunkel II, and one sister, Louise Beiersdorfer.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Fisher Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Howard Wade officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Loganspoit Friends may call from 11 a.m. Thursday until the time of the service in the funeral chapel.
