Commemorating their twelve years with the academy, "Bill" Riggens and "Eddie" Bergman, who have headed the tonsorial and tailoring departments so efficiently, presented all the officers and attaches of the school who nave been connected with it for the same length of time with handsome' document files this week. The file or portfolio is handsome make of embossed leather with compartments for insurance policies, notes, deeds and other documents even to the "last will and testament." An appropriate inscription in gilt l etters carries the compliments of the donors together with the occasion of the gift. - Citizen November 16, 1916

EDWARD AND GRACE BERGMAN FAMILY

    Edward J. Bergman, the son of John E. Bergman and Catherine Gast Bergman, was born in Plymouth on February 28, 1886.

    Grace M. Fanning Bergman, the daughter of Shirley B. Fanning and Emma Felter Fanning, was born in North Manchester on November 17, 1888.

    Grace and Edward met in Plymouth, where they both resided at that time. They were married on November 30, 1909 in the chapel of the old St. Michael's Academy, which was, then, a Boys Boarding School.

    Born from this marriage were seven children of hich the first two were twins: Edward J. (twin), Mary Ethel (twin), Martha Jane, Margaret Louise, James Bernard, Julia Annette and George Andrew. All of the children were baptized in St. Michaels Catholic Church in Plymouth.

    Edward J. worked with his father learning the tailoring business until his marriage to Grace after which they moved to Culver where he was employed at the Culver Military Academy doing tailoring and taking care of the cadets' uniforms.

    During his career at the academy he met many famous and interesting people such as Adolphe Menjou, a famous movie actor, General Pershing, Billy Sunday, Buffalo Bill, the famous opera star, Galli-Curci, and Billy and Blossom SCiley of vaudeville fame.

    Edward and Grace built their home on Lake Shore Drive in Culver where the Catholic Church once stood.

    In 1919 Edward and Grace moved from Culver to Plymouth with the first four children: Edward, Mary, Martha, and Margaret.

    Edward went into the dry cleaning business. He was one of "the pioneers" of dry cleaning in the area. He and his brother, Francis, went into the dry cleaning and tailoring business known as "Bergman Brothers Dry Cleaning and Tailoring."

    Edward J. Bergman died February 7, 1967; Grace M. Bergman died December 19, 1977; Martha Jane Bergman Miller died in August 1946; and. Mary Ethel (Bergman) Kelsey died in July 1983.

    The marriage of Edward J. Bergman and Miss Grace Fanning occurred Tuesday morning at St. Michael's chapel, Father Tremmel offieiating. Only the immediate families and friends were present.

      John E. Bergman Jan. 21, 1913 - Dec. 2, 1996 The Mass of the Resurrection for John Edward "Eddie" Bergman, 83, a civic leader and a respected and beloved citizen of Marshall County his entire lifetime, will be held at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, 612 N. Center St., Plymouth, on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Father David Voors will celebrate the Mass.

      A Rosary service will be held today at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, at 4:30 p.m.

      Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

      Eddie Bergman, 809 Oakhill Ave., Plymouth, died on Monday, Dec. 2, following a three-week illness, in the Emergency Room of St. Joseph's Hospital of Marshall County.

      The son of Edward J. Bergman and Grace M. Fanning Bergman, he was born on January 21, 1913, in Culver, Ind. As a youth in Plymouth,

      Eddie had a Western Union telegram bicycle-delivery route and helped his father manage the Bergman Dry Cleaning and Laundry business which evolved from a tailor shop established by his grandfather, John Bergman, in 1896.

      Eddie graduated from St. Michael's Academy in 1927, and was a 1931 graduate of Plymouth High School. At PHS, he was a member of the orchestra in 1928 and 1929, and was a yell leader in his senior year. He graduated from the South Bend College of Business and Commerce, and for many years was the bookkeeper and office manager for Mastic Asphalt Products, South Bend.

      He enjoyed athletics and was a long-time usher at Notre Dame Stadium. Prior to his retirement, he assisted with sales at Millea's Party Package. In The Sesquicentennial History of Marshall County, 1836- 1986, Eddie is noted as having received national attention, in 1926, as being the shortest Boy Scout in the United States. Friends who teased him, affectionately calling him "Shorty," would be answered, as he pulled himself up to his full height, "My name is Edward." Although small in stature, he was tall in spirit and everyone who knew him, loved him.

      A Democrat, he served two terms as the Center Township Trustee, and one term as a Marshall County Councilman.

      A member of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, he was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and a current member of Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, Plymouth.

      On December 27, 1958, Eddie and Margaret Pickavet Ball were married in Plymouth. Margaret died on Aug. 1, 1987.

      Eddie is survived by two sons: Douglas E., and his wife, Johanna Bergman, Rocklin, Calif., and Frederick C. Bergman, of Indianapolis, Ind. Also surviving are two stepsons and their Michael D., and Diana Ball, Virginia Beach, Va.; Phillip A., and Mary Ball, Indianapolis, Ind.; and a stepdaughter and her husband, Yvonne M. and Todd Dagy, Cleveland, Ohio. Two sisters and a brother: Margaret Barnard Peregrine, Julia Johnson and George A. Bergman, all of Plymouth, survive. A sister-in-law, Rosemary Bergman, widow of his brother James B. Bergman, and his dear friends, Harriet and Bernie Scheetz, all of Plymouth, are also survivors.

      In addition to his parents, his wife, and his brother, Jim, he was preceded in death by two sisters, his twin, Mary E. Kelsey and Martha J. Miller. Interment will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth, Ind.

      Logansport bus crash claims Plymouth victim

      Mrs. Mary Kelsey, 70, of the Skylane Apartments, Plymouth, died Sunday afternoon in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, of injuries Friday night in a bus-car collision near Logansport. Hospital officials said Mrs. Kelsey died at 12:55 p.m. Sunday.

      Officials said a ruling on the exact cause of death had not yet been made by the Marion County coroner's office.

      Mrs. Kelsey, who had been listed in critical condition since Saturday, was a passenger on the Indiana Motor Bus Co. vehicle involved in the accident on Ind. 25, two miles north of Logansport.

      Police said the accident occurred as a speeding westbound car on Cass County Road 200 N. ran a stop sign shortly before 8:30 p.m. and struck the bus. Two persons in the car were killed. They were Thomas A. Dobrosky, 19, of Logansport, and Melissa J. Tabler, 16, of rural Logänsport.

      The driver of the bus, Virgil J. Spindler, 61, of Plymouth, was listed in fair condition today in St. Joseph's Medical Center, South Bend. Police said he suffered a broken jaw and chest pains. A South Bend woman, also a passenger on the bus, was treated in a Logansport hospital and released. The other 19 passengers on the bus were not injured, police said.

      Services for Mrs. Kelsey will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Plymouth, of which she was a member. Rev. Raymond Balzer, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.

      Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnson Funeral Home, Plymouth.

      Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

      She was born on Jan. 21, 1913, in Plymouth and had lived in Cromwell the past seven years before returning to Plymouth this past April.

      In August 1931 in Plymouth, she married Jay I. Kelsey, who died on April 16, 1983.

      Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Marcia Ann Smith of Warsaw; four sons, Robert and David of Plymouth, George of Zionsville, Ind., and Charles Richmond, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Barnard of Florida and Mrs. Julia Johnson of Plymouth; and three brothers, Edward, Jim and George Bergman, all of Plymouth.       Margaret L. (Barnard) Peregrine, a Plymouth area resident for most of her life, died at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2008, in Miller's Merry Manor, Plymouth. She was 92-years-old.

      Margaret was born in Culver, Ind., on February 1, 1916. She was the daughter of Edward J. and Grace Fanning Bergman, the fourth of their seven children.

      She was a 1934 graduate of Plymouth High School.

      On September 3, 1938, in Rochester, Ind., Margaret and Joseph E. Barnard were married. Joseph died on June 2, 1982.

      She married Calvin C. Peregrine on February 17, 1987. Calvin died on February 11, 1989.

      Margaret and Joseph Barnard were co-owners of a Party Package store in Plymouth during their marriage.

      She enjoyed playing golf and spending time with her grandchildren.

      A member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, she also belonged to St. Michael's Rosary Society and Harvest House.

      She was a member-at-large of Delta Theta Tau sorority and was a member of the Ladies Gold League.

      Margaret is survived by a daughter, Diane (James) Day of Bloomington, Ind., and a son, Stephen D. Barnard of Indianapolis.

      Five grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren also survive her death.

      She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands and an infant son, Joseph A. Barnard.

      Three sisters and three brothers have also died. They are sisters: Martha J. Miller, Mary E. Kelsey and Julia A. Johnson. Her brothers were James B., John Edward and George A. Bergman.

      A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, 613 N. Center St., Plymouth, on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Father William Kummer, pastor of the church, will officiate.

      Entombment will be in the New Oakhill Mausoleum, Plymouth, Ind.

      Memorial gifts in Margaret's name may be made to Riley Children's Hospital in Honor of Brayden Day.

      Julia A. Johnson, 84, a lifetime Marshall County resident, living at 501 Pennsylvania Ave., Plymouth, for the past ten years, died of natural causes at 11:02 p.m. on Friday, November 4, 2005, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth. Julia was a homemaker a loving wife and proud mother, first and foremost. Family meant so much in her life. She was born in Plymouth, the daughter of Edward J. and Grace M. Fanning Bergman, on August 19, 1921. She graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1941.

      On November 13, 1941, in St. Michael's Church Rectory in Plymouth, Julia and Eugene "Gene" Johnson were married. Gene died on June 11, 1993.

      An ardent Chicago Cub fan, she also cheered for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. She enjoyed all kinds of sporting and musical events in which her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participated.

      Julia is survived by two daughters, a son and five grand-children.

      The daughters are: Susan L. Rodgers and Kenneth D. Rodgers, Plymouth, and her children, Tana J. and Dan Houin, Melinda K. and Tim Lemler and Cheryl L. and John Caine.

      Daughter Sandra J. and Bobby Wolfe and their daughter, Heather Wolfe, live in St. Lucie, Fla..

      Her son and daughter-in-law is Thomas E. and Jane Johnson, Lake Bruce, Ind., with their daughter, Karrie C. Johnson

      Seven great-grandchildren, a sister Margaret M. Peregine, a brother George A. Bergman both of Plymouth and several nieces and nephews survive as well.

      Julia was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Gene, and by two sisters: Mary E. Kelsey and Martha Miller and two brothers: James Bergman and John E. "Eddie" Bergman.

      Friends are invited to come to celebrate the life of Julia Johnson from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2005, in the church where she was a long time and faithful member, St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, 615 N. Center St., Plymouth.

      A rosary will be prayed at 10 a.m. in the church.

      The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., following calling. The Rev. Father Manuel Evangelista will officiate.

      Interment will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth, Ind.

      Memorial gifts in Julia's memory may be given to St. Michael's Parish or in the form of Masses.
