Charles Hayes

Charles E. Hayes, the leading liveryman of Culver and one of its large property owners, is a native of Illinois, born in Bement, Piatt County, on the 15th of July 1874.

His father is Abraham Hayes, a native of Ohio, who came to Culver in May 1895, and entered the livery business, Charles E. buying a one-half interest in the enterprise in the year following its establishment.

In 1906 he purchased his father's interest and thus became sole proprietor of the business.

Charles E. Hayes received his education in the schools of his native Illinois town, graduating from its high school, which is considered one of the best in the state. After leaving school he went south and spent five years in Alabama and Georgia, engaged during that period in the winery business, and in 1896 transferred his activities from Tallapoosa, Georgia, to Culver, Marshall county.

Since that year he has been developing a fine business, and is now the owner of the most complete and modern livery in the town. His establishment includes a stable of fifteen horses, carriages of the latest make, an automobile and facilities for heavy teaming. In 1901 he erected a commodious barn, 120 by 70 feet in dimensions.

Besides his livery plant Mr. Hayes owns three residences in Culver and other property of value,

He is also interested in a number of local corporations, including the Culver Water Works.

In politics he is a Republican, and although one of the most popular men of the locality, has evinced no desire for public preferment.

Mr. Hayes' wife, to whom he was married in January, 1897, was formerly Bertha E. Parker, daughter of Eli and Catherine (Spangler) Parker, both widely known residents of the county,

1906 - Jun 7 - The New Jail - The town board has closed a conract with Charles Hayes for a ten year's lease on a lot on which to erect a calaboose. The building will be commenced this week under the day labor plan. It will be constructed of cement with glavanized iron roof. The steel cage is already here.

Charles E. Hayes, son of Abram and Nancy Ellen Hayes, was born at Bement, Illinois, July 15, 1874 and passed away at his home in Culver on November 1, 1941 at the age of 67 years 3 months and 16 days.

He had been ill for about 6 years and had been confined to his bed for 3 years.

His early life was spent on a farm in Illinois, and in 1896 he moved with the family to Culver where he was in business with his father.

He was united in marriage to Bertha E. Parker of Maxinkuckee on January 7, 1899. All their married life was spent in Culver. They operated a restaurant for about ten years, until he was forced to retire on account of ill health.

Surviving besides the widow are three sisters, Mrs. Ada Cromley of Culver, Dr. Edna Hayes of Washington, D. C. and Mrs. Margaret Sullivan of Terre Haute; and one brother, William Hayes of Terre Haute.

One sister, Mrs. Olive Bogardus, preceded him in death on November 7, 1936 - Citizen Nov 05, 1941


Hayes... Funeral Rites Held
Charles E. Hayes, age 67 years died at his home here Saturday evening after an illness of several years.

He was born in Bement, Ill., and moved to Culver with the family in 1896.

He was in business with his father for some time.

In 1899 he was married to Bertha Parker, Maxinkuckee, who assisted him in the restaurant business for about 10 years.

Ill health forced Mr. Hayes to give up this confining work.

Surviving are the widow; three sisters, Mrs. Ada Cromley of Culver, Dr. Edna Hayes of Washington, D. C., and Mrs. Margaret Sullivan of Terre Haute; and one brother, William Hayes of Terre Haute.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Easterday's Funeral home. Rev. H. P. Ivey of the Plymouth Methodist church officiated. - Citizen Nov 05, 1941

Mrs. Bertha Hayes Dies In Hospital At South Bend Mrs. Bertha E. Hayes, age 83. died Tuesday morning at Osteopathic Hospital, South Bend. where she had been a patient for two months. Born in Maxinkuckee on Oct. 18. 1874. She had lived her entire life in this community. On Jan. 3. 1898 she was married to Charles E. Hayes who preceded her in death on Nov. 1. 1941. The only surviving relatives are tour nieces. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Easterday Funeral Home with Dr. Meredith Sprunger, pastor of the Grace United Church. officiating. She will be taken to the Flanner and Buchanan Mortuary in Indianapolis on Friday where cremation services will be held. - Citizen Mar 26, 1958
