Nancy Ellen Wilkin was born January 16 1850, in Eaton ohio.

She was married 2 October 1873 to Abram Hays at Bloomington, Illinois.

She is survived by two sisters: Mrs. C. W. Cook, of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Mrs. Margaret Hinds, of Richmond, Indiana, and all of her sons and daughters: Charles E. Hayes; Mrs. E. N. Cromley; Wm. M. Hayes; Clara Edna Hayes; Mrs. H. W. Bogardus; Mrs. Jno. M. Sullivan.

She was a member of the Presbyterian church from early childhood until coming to Culver in May, 1896, when she became a member of the Grace Reformed Church.

On January 1, 1926 at 3:00 p.m. she passed quietly and peacefully, afer a long life of continued service to her family and firends. While she has gone to well deserved rest, those who remain have given up a wonderful mother and devoted sister.

Funeral services and burial were held at Demente, Ill. her former home and where het husband was buried.

Three Killed In Crash With Frieght Train

Mother and Two Sons Die At Burr Oak

Three members of a Culver family were instantly killed at 1:15 a. m. Saturday at Burr Oak when the automobile in which they were riding crashed into a coal car standing across Road 17 on a side track of the Nickel Plate railroad.

The victims were Mrs. Olive Bogardus, age 48 years, widow of Garland Bogardus, and two sons: William, age 26 years, and Robert. age 22 years.

They were riding in William's car, of which he was the driver. Mrs. Bogardus was with him in the front seat and Robert occupied the back seat. The trio was returning from South Bend where Mrs. Bogardus had gone for the day.

William was a fireman in the Epworth hospital and Robert was employed by the Bendix Brake company, both South Bend institutions.

Await Passenger Train

The freight train had gone o11 the siding for a fast passenger train to pass. It is said that the passenger had just gone through Burr Oak and the freight was preparing to draw out when the fatal crash occurred.

It is reported that the electric flashers do not operate when a train is on the siding with both switches closed. That William Bogardus may have seen the flashers stop operation and thought that the track was clear is believed by some to be the cause of the accident.

The automobile hit the freight car with such force that the engine was driven back into the front of the sedan. it is stated. and the momentum was so great that the spare tire drove into the rear trunk compartment. The top of the car was buckled by the terrific impact and the entire interior of the vehicle was wrecked.

Identification Difficult

All three victims were badly mangled, it is reported, especially the two riding in the front seat. Identification at first was difficult due to facial injuries.

An ambulance, a doctor, and the coroner were called at once to the scene, but all three of the occupants were dead when removed from the mass of debris.

It took about two hours to clear away the wreckage as the coal car was put out of commission and had to be left by the freight train.

The wrecked automobile was brought to town where it was viewed by hundreds during the day.

Recalls Former Crash

The setting for the accident is almost identical to that which seriously injured John Osborn several years ago.

Surviving Mrs. Bogardus are one son, Thomas, foreman of the construction of a postoffice building at St. Joseph, Mich., for the James I. Barnes company of Culver; three sisters, Dr. Edna Hayes, of Washington, D. C., Mrs. Ada Cromley, of Culver, and Mrs. Margaret Sullivan, of Evansville, Ind.; and two brothers, Will Hayes, of Terre Haute, Ind., and Charles Hayes, of Culver.

Triple funeral services were held Sunday at 2:00 p. m., at the Grace Reformed Church; Rev. Harsh officiating.

Interment was in the Culver Masonic Cemetery

A bus load of associates for Robert's at the Bendix plant attended the services - Nov 11 1936 Citizen.
