Dating house
By the foundation it is assumed to be pre 1900 - Most
pre-20th century houses had stone foundations, either rubble stone
or cut stone. Concrete blocks did not come into full use until the 1920's
for foundation usectho The Ferrier'a cement block plant was establised
on Mar 28, 1907 and M. R. Cline had a 1914-1951 - Cement Block Factory |

This from research done would be consider what is called a "Plank Hose:
The most common type are those that the walls are truly built entirely
of the boards that most picture when discussing as planks. These planks
are typically 1-1/4 to 2 inches thick and extend from the foundation to
the roof. This type of house, most commonly built between 1870s to 1910s,
was known as a plank house, box house or battened box house.
all outside walls were roughly 8 to 12 inch wide rough sawed lumber; the
inside of the outer walls were all tounge and grove lath. The kitchen,
bathroom and fireplace/bedroom roof was 8 to 12 inch wide rough
sawed lumber cover with tin and lots of tar until a slanted roof was installed
in 1980 over it leaving the orginal roof in place.

| And by this from the '
article on Dr. Gustavus
Adolphus Durr; In the 1876s, the doctor owned a tract of land, consisting of somewhat
over 76 acres and located south and southwest of Marmont.
This land included the present JOHN HAWK farm and extended from the corner back of the
Evangelical Church to the Doll Road, west of town.
It was bounded on the north by the present. Mill Road, on the east by the section line road,
on the south by the M. G. GOULD land, and on the west by the Doll Road. At that time there
were only two structures on the land, one at the corner of the section line road and Mill Road,
the other some distance down the section line road, (which evidently followed the present alley
between Main and Ohio streets). |
The 419 S. Main property was a part of the - 76.57A Dr. Gustavus Adolphus Durr
described above that Henry & Laura A. Barnhisel and the Hawk family purchased.
From the Logansport Daily Journal page 3 dated Aug. 27, 1882:
All the preliminaries for the extension of the Logansport branch of the
Vandalia railway to Lake
Michigan have been satisfactorily adjusted, and upon compliiance with a few
easy conditions the contact will be closed, and the work will be commenced
and pushed to completion.
Readers of the Journal are familiar with the route of this line to Marmont (Maxinkuckee),
and will have no difficulty in following it to South Bend and the lake...
With these advantages before them, our citizens are asked to consider one of the
conditions above named, which condition is that the right of way shall be furnished
free to the new line thorugh our county. The estimated cost of this right of way is
from $7,000 to $10,000 and it is proposed to raise the amount by subscription. A
consideraable portion of this subscription has already been secured, and a committee
appointed for that purpose will make an effort to raise the remainder during the
present week...
1883 - Oct 6 - The Vandaiia railroad company commenced laying iron at Marmount a
day or two ago, and-withln a short time the tract will be completed from Maxinkuckee
lake to the Nickle Plate railroad, a distance of about three miles,- Logansport Pharos

the 1894
Incorporation map
and the second one for
Marmont has surfaced. and seems to clearly show and I might be wrong and thus would
date the house back to 1894 now -
On it where the property is located; are 2 black squares [could be ink spots :-( ] but
maps of this era showed structures by this method.
This could mean the house is older than that also and possible was built by
Laura A & Henry
Barnhisel instead of David & Catherine Hawk The other the first one that surfaced
the markings seem the be letters/numbers only
There is two distinct drawing patterns in both documents one is heavier lines and the
other is lighter
Which do you believe to be accurate is now the question. |

1952 – Mar 5 - Location of Sewer Line Discussed At Board Meeting
A near capacity crowd of interested citizens attended the regular meeting of
the Town Board on Monday evening.
Many of those attending the busy session were property holders along Main
Street extending from Mill Street to Davis street where the town is seeking a
n easement for the placing of a sewer line at the back of the properties.
The Matter of the location of the line was brought before the group of
property holders at a called meeting two weeks ago where it was explained
that because there was no alley the the town was seeking easements to
permit the placement of the sewers at the back of the property to serve
both Main Street homes and those on Ohio Street.
Original plans called for the sewer line to go around the Boetsma Upholstery
firm Building making it necessary tow manholes.
At Monday’s meeting Joe Boetsma and his son offered to permit the town
to go underneath their building if the could be guaranteed that any damage
to the building would be prepared.
Following a discussion with Donald Lessig, consulting engineer, it was decided
to get estimates on the proposal with a view to following the suggestion. It
was believed that The construction of one manhole together with the saving
in tile would offset the cost of Replacing the floor of the Boestma building.
Among the property holders directly affected are the
Evangelical United
Brethren Church which was represented at the meeting by Board Chairman Lester
Young, and L. A. Crabb,
Dave Burns 419 s. Main , and
the Boetsmas, 115 W Mill |

Sometime about 1959 David stared to brick the house he never finished it only saying
"next spring" or "next fall" neither came.... There was a 3rd one to this set of Freda
with a baseball bat David laughingly joked it was taken this day becaus so many had
stopped to talk to him and was interuppting his progress on the house. He said the man
sitting on the proch talking to him was Frank Hayward. I gave it to a daughter back when
and have lost the computer copy I made of it. |
These were snipped out of a home movie - but it shows the old porch being
transformed as well as the double hung tall windows - that were replaced by
a solid non-opening picture window.
Porch north side and kitchen door. Porch was being bricked to be enclosed
with the temporary widnows that were still being used those not blown out by the storm of 2012 |

refused to have it removed |

The back of house from Jun 1972 (proably earlier) to Oct 1980. One Hallloween eve
in 1978-1979 Rod Martindale and a cohert came down and kicked the plank from side
of house thinking it would allow the back wall to fall to the ground but it did not -
DAvid just picked the plank back up and laid it up agains the back porche again!
June 8, 1976 - Quit Claim Deed Helen Durkot Burns and David B. Burns Sr. to David B.
Burns Sr. [Helen (Durkot) Best Altman]
House shortly after Sep - October 1980 - After years and gallons of tar
David finally gave in and had the flat roof over the kitchen, bathroom and fire place
room done - but left the old tin roof with tons of tar on it under neath the contractor's
talked him into slightly raising the roof over the back flat roof and tying it into
the main roof and the re-doing of the back porch. It was to only be the roof - but
once there they talked David into the back porch/laundry room and then the kitchen...
I believe they tried to talk him into the bathroom but could not. |

Thus the layout of the roof after 1980 remodel |
1982 - New windows - The single wide dining room window was replaced
with a 8 foot picture, window; the lving room south window and the bedroom west
window was replaced with small 3-4 foot windows - and whent he fireplace room was
remodeld a small 3-4 foot window was placed on the south east corner and a 8 foot
pciture widown on the west side - picture taken in 1990 shows the picture window and
the area of the old window that was filled in with whatever boards was available The
smaller window to the left was replaced in the late 1970's in the bathroom |

Septemebr 25, 1985 - Warranty Deed - David B. Burns, Sr. to Judith E. Burns
[Judith E. Mc Kee]
Abstract . of the house and the general areas of Section 21.
In 1991 to 1993 Saw Judith E. Burns trying her hand at stone work - there was a left
over sand pile and a pile of rocks. Rocks were supplied by others also through the
project. The fireplace and the north wall was re-done but was orginally his handiwork -
otherwise .all the stone work was her creation.
|
an aerial view of the location (clicking on photo enlarges) |
general layout of the house |
|
2006, March - Saw outright vandalism to the house by some person or persons
throwing a rock at the front window several time till they broke through it - the rock
was found on the living room floor. The police was called - came down
but they could do nothing about it... It had to be boarded up until Jul 2014 when a
paned storm window was found to replace it temporarily - replacement of glass or
plexiglass was not within price range at the time.
2007 - July - Saw damage done to the carport by the sewer project people - some one
had backed into the south west pillar so hard they left the imprint off the vechile on
the pillar and knocking concrete blocks - they attempeted to have it repaired but done
more structural damage to the roof - was told by the supervising engineer that it
was not bolted down and they would come in and lift the roof up off the pillars and
repair them - this twisted, pulled and put tension and stress on the rafters and
metal sheeting. When forced to tear it down - found was lag bolts cemetented in each
of the pillars and bolted to the roof plate - no ther compensation was given as to
repair or replacement of the carport - thus it was left as was so it could eventually
be replaced.
One person said in Nov 2011 to tear it down and leave only the fire place... but
was defiant and guess was being too sentimental and foolish....
2012 - June 30 - Saw the front porch temporary window of 1961 blown out
and broken alll over the side walk and parial ones of the north side porch windows.
For being temorary they lasted 51 years! >
2013 - April - saw the old big rotten and hallow black locust tree and the walnut
tree come down in front of what was left of the carport
2013 Sep - saw the start of roof repair - first was the coming down of the chimney
which alway leaked around it for years no matter the amoutn of tar put on it and the
problem was never solved when the raised roof was installed as it was a part of the
main roof it was just hidden... and tarping of the roof to prevent further damage...
2014 - April - The start of restoring - (but a failure) I done all
the inside dirt work my self with very little help to see what was above dropped
ceilings 2 in the kitchen; and one drop ceiling each in the dining & living room also the bathroom
the bedroom and fireplace room were the 12-14 foot ceilings. All for the love of an old
house and my dream to restore it... The first surprise was that the main house roof had
absolutely no sheeting board at all it was all slats and shake shingles with 3-4 layers of
ashpalt shingles,. No wonder a new roof was ever put on it - I think i read some where in
the 1910's Shake shingles were outlawed in Culver as roofing material |
|
|
First roof to be done was the laundry room because it was the worst and in very back
shape for only being 34 yeasr old... All new plywood was installed 3/4 of course as the
other was rotted - storm-Gaurd was used till actual roofing could begin |
2014 - May Moved onto the big west roof - surpirise under neath abound - the conractors
did not even clean it off - they left Davids old trowel, sqeuagee used to put tar on, a
canning jar among others things. This shows how the roof was done in 1980 - All new
plywood was installed 3/4 All new plywood was installed 3/4 storm-Gaurd was used till
actual roofing could begin
2014 - July - After the roof was done saw the demise of the TV tower and
was on to the North side of the house for re-roofing.
.
May 2015 - Brought about removing all the old siding 2 layers - down to the
6-10 inch wide by 1/2 inch think planking the house was
made of. This also showed the next project - restoring the windows back
to the original siziing and framing - not all cane be but most can.
Hopes and dreams to restore the old place was still being entertained
from May 2016 but it was just not meant to be.
In March 2020 contacted a construction company to see if could be
restored - but was told that could not do part and live and finish; was told
the fireplace David built was not up to code either (exactly as he left in after the
1982 remodel; looking around finally and honest;y there was just to much damage
from neglect from ? to 1972; the remodel comaflouges of 1980 and 1982; there were
3 dirt crawl spaces two of original field stone the living room, fireplace &
bathroom room; I had ti out aside the sentimental feeling and face reality... |

the coal bin was a combination of rock foundation with a
cement shute; |

|
the basement stairwell was rock foundation as was the basement area under
the kitchen the south end had a 3 to 4ft high ledge about 2 feet high with an
opening into the bathroom and fireplace/bedroom which were dirt/sane crawl space. |
the basement area under the dining room was a combination of rock
foundation; the east side had about a 3 foot by 2 foot ledge that ran the full length of
the room, it had an opening about 3 feet by 2 feet wide into thedirt/sand crawl space
under the living room. the west wall was glazed block (could of been placed in front of
a rock foundation unsure |

It was time to give in..... but i still have my regrets I do tohink it could of been
restored
Demo was done on July 27th and as of Aug. 19th there is just a gaping hole... |

A house design wasxpicked out not the first one I had chosen but...
the original one I chose was 10 feet to long ran length wise of the lot east to west -
it was compact - wit all bedrooms on the south and the living & dining room, kitchen,
laundry, storage on the north side; with front open porch; and an screen enclosed
porch on the west. This is the replacement house design - have flipped th dinning
room area to the South- as the door off the back veranda entry is to into it instead
of the bathroom as the original print. |

2020 - April - 2021 This year has been very hard and a roller coaster ride and still
I am still wondering if it will all pan out maybe...
The hardest thing was to concede that I had to give up hope of restoring the
old house But there was just to much reconstruction that would of had to take place
and would exceed the cost of just building new... and longer to do and I could not
live in it as it was being done as we did in 1980 and 1982 I was told it had to all be
in move in livable condition... or so was told
Plus any unseen surprises that could not be seen such as the stone foundation in the
crawl spaces of the fireplace room and living room (which could not see the condition
of); the coal bin under the bedroom was stone foundation with cement chute was
deteriorating strengthen the rafters, and the floors would of had to all been totally
ripped up and flooring and joists all replaced
I even asked if it could be rebuilt in the same old footprint and saving the fireplace but
no that i did not meet code thoe in 2011 I was told to save the fireplace tear everything
else down and start over.
Thus tho I wanted to so save David's brick work and his fireplace I have had to realize
it was un-realistic.... It was heartbreaking to let go of my hope and dream of restoring...
Tho no tears flowed outwardly as it was coming down but for a brief moment when a
neighbor saw me came over to watch for a few minutes when he remarked about
memories they flowed inwardly and I was totally bum out for a lone while .
I wanted to build on the same footprint - thus possibly could save the fireplace and possibly
square off the south side of the living room with the bedroom. But was told it was not feasible.
Some are telling me I have done right, others have told me I did wrong in tearing down
and re-building... many think I am have reaching.
I just have to pray that I have made the right choice and that I can prove those who have no
faith in my decision and prove my doubts wrong... yes I still have a few doubts but its been
done and its on its way to completion
2021 - April - Its done - it is taking getting use to - still having a hard time
accepting the old house is gone even tho I have watched the whole process. New Age Construction of
Culver - Clint Sayler and Tim Howard were the contractors. |

2023 - Aug 20 - Made it hack to live in house - but still a lot to overcome and make it liveable furniture,
shelving and landscaping. Its been a challenge and still is just praying will overcome and make it work.
Struggling with the "open concept" of kitchen/dinning room and living room the lack of wall space and
storage space... living out of boxes and sorting down...
