Ezra Hawkins, Age 85, Dies of Heart Trouble

Ezra E. Hawkins, age 85 years died at his home Saturday of heat trouble, having been in poor health since the middle of June.

He was a retired mail carrier and lived all his life in and near Culver.

He was a member of the Evangelical Church and the Gleaners Lodge.

The surviving relatives are the widow, Mrs. Jennie Hawkins; two daughters, Mrs. Tillie Norris and Mrs. Lottie Marshall both of Culver; three sons - Benjamin, Elza and Lloyd, all of Culver; two step-daughters, Mrs. Lous Greenway and Mrs. Caroline Patton, of Culver; two step-sons Clarence Hollett of Plymouth and John Hollett of Mishawaka; two brothers William H. Hawkins of Sturgis, Mich., and John R. Hawkins of Meaweaka, Mich.; seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren

Funeral services were held at the Culver Evangelical Church Monday afternoon, Rev. R. L. Haley officiating.

Internment was in the Culver Masonic Cemetery. - 14 Sep 1938 Citizen

Ezra E. Hawkinswas the fourth child, born in this county, March 27, 1853 to William W. Hawkins and Telitha Ann Owen.

He was married June 12, 1874, to MARY ANN EBLING, his first wife
    Mrs Ezra Hawkins, wife of the mail carrier on route 16, died at her home on South Main Street after an illness of several months.

    The funeral was held at the Reformed church on Suday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. A. H. Michael, assister by Rev. T. J. Russell.

    The music was furnished by the choir. The pall beareres were the four sons and two sons-in-law of the deceased - Clarence, Elza, Benjamin, and Lloyd Hawkins, N. S. Norris and R. E. Marshall.

    The flowers were numerous and beautiful.

    The burial was tempporarily in the Culver cemetery.

    Mary Ann Jane, oldest daughter of Benjamin and Angeline Edbling, was born in Schuylkill county Pennsylvania, Feb 2, 1844 and died Feb. 10, 1911 aged 56 years and 8 days.

    When a small girl her parents moved to Indiana and the principal part of her life was spent in and around this community.

    On June 26, 1877, she was married to Ezra Hawkins of Starke county.

    To this union were born eight children, all of whom are living - Clarence M, William Benjamin, Elza H., Lloyd E, Frederick E., Mrds. Matilda Norris, Mrs. Charlotta Marshall and Bertha C.

    Besides the children, the husband, aged father, two sisters (Mrs. Catherine Zechiel of Marion, O. and Elizabeth Barrett of Pawnee, Ok. and four grandchildren remain to mourn her death.

    One brother and her mother preceded her in death.

    She was baptized in infancy and confirmed in her youth as a member of the Zion Reformed church, and later transferred her membership to the church at Culver. As a christain she was firm in her faith, loyal to the church and her Savior at all times, and strove earnestly to rear her family to fear the Lord.

    Her family owes her a debt of gratitude for earnest admonition and prayers and good christain example. As a mother and companion no service was too ardous for her.

    The home was her realm where she reigned as a loving queen, guiding with a firm hand and loving heart. In short, to all around her she was a friend in need.

    Her life was a life of unselfish service for others. To the last of her life she was devoted to the welfare of others. The rest into which she has now entered was well deserved. Like one of old, it may be said of her, "she hath done what she could". May she rest in peace.- 16 Feb 1911 - Citizen

EZRA HAWKINS married in Oct 1914 for the 2nd time -
    Ezra Hawkins, government mail carrier on route 15 and Mrs. Jennie Hollet were united in marriage on Sunday evening at 7:30 at the home of the latter.

    The ceremony was perfored by Rev. z J. R. Young, pastor of the Evangelical church.

    In addition to the Culver relatives of the bride and grrom there were present Mr. and Mrs John Fetters of Beaver City, Neb.; Mr. and Mrs Charles Alexander of Culver and Miss Hattie Lichtenberger of Hihhard. The Citizen on behalf of a circle of friends extend congratulations to the worthy couple and hopes for them a family life of uninterrupted joy. - 15 Oct 1914

    Mrs. Jennie Hawkins, One Time Resident Here, Dies

    Mrs. Jennie L. Hawkins, 75 years old, died Saturday evening in Parkview Hospital, Plymouth, after an illness of a heart ailment.

    She was born in Lima, Ind., May 13, 18871 and had rsided for 40 years in the Plymouth and Culver communities.

    Surviving are four children Mrs. Caroline Patton and Clarece Hollet of Plymouth, Mrs. Lois Greenway of Culver and John Hollet of Mishawaka; two sisters Carrie Gawl of Plymouth and Mrs. Ella Rice of Sturfus, Mich. and a brother John Newman of Sturgis; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

    Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon in the Evangelical church in Culver, of which she was a member

    Burial will be in Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.

    Clarence Hawkins Dies In Forstoria, Ohio

    Clarence M. Hawkins, age 56 years, died Tuesday Nov. 20 at his home in Fostoria, Ohio, after an illness of nine months.

    He was the son of Ezra Hawkins of Culver, and was born in Starke county Indiana, June 12, 1878.

    Funeral services were held Friday at Fostoria. Music was furnished by two nieces and the pallbearers were nephews.

    Surviving are the widow, two sons, one grandson, the aged father, three brothers Loyd, Benjamin and Elza of Culver; and three sisters Mrs. N. S. Norris, Mrs. Ray Marshall and Mrs. Martha Kimmel of Mishawaka to mourn his massing. - 28 Nov. 1924 - Citizen.

    Funeral Services for W. B. Hawkins Held Today

    Funeral services for William Benjamin Hawkins, age 76, are being held at two o'clock this afternoon at his home on White street

    Rev. Charles Light, pastor of the Union Church of the Brethern and Rev. Maynary Tittle, pastor of the Culver Bible Church are conducting the services with burial at the Culver Cemetery

    Mrs. Hawkins died suddenly of a heart attack Sunday afternoon whil driving with Mrs. Hawkins on State Road 10 about two miles west of Culver. Dr. Otis R. Bown of Bremen, Marshall County Cornoner, said that he had died of coronary occulsion

    Mr. Hawkins, the second son of eight children of Ezra and Mary Ann Hawkins was born in Starke county near Culver April 28, 1880 and had spent his entire life in this community.

    He retired a few years ago and moved to Culver.

    He was a member of the Cuhurch of the Berthern

    His parents, a sister Bertha, and two brothers Clarence and Fred preceded him in death.

    Surviving are his widow Lenora; two brothers Elza and Lloyd both of Culver; two sisters Mrs. Norman Norris and Mrs Lottie Marshall; and several nieces and nephews. - 24 Oct 1956 - Citizen

    Mary Barbara Hawkins, nee Albert, daughter of John and Catherine Albert, was born March 12, 1891, in Pulaski County, Ind., and died in Culver Feb. 22, 1914 aged 22 years, 11 months and 9 days. She was married to Lloyd Hawkins June 28, 1908. To them was born one daughter, Helen May. She was converted about eight years ago and united with the Evangelical church at Pleasant Hill on Bruce Lake charge under the labors of Rev. A.E. Weyrick. Her sufferings were severe, but she bore them with patience. In her last illness she often requested the Christian people to pray with her and expressed her desire to be a Christian and was putting her trust in the Lord. She leaves to mourn a husband, daughter, mother, one brother, one sister. Her father, two sisters and five brothers preceded her in death. Funeral services were held in the Evangelical church, conducted by Rev. J.F. Young, on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 24. Interment at the Culver cemetery.

    Mrs. Charlotte (Lottie) Marshall Duddleson, 84, formerly of 439 Lakeview Street, Culver, passed away at 3:00 a.m. on Friday, September 14, 1973, at the Carlyle Nursing Home, South Bend, following an illness of the past two months.

    She was born on May 9, 1889, in Starke County, to Ezra and Mary (Ebling) Hawkins, and had lived in Culver most of her life. She was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Culver.

    She was first married to Ray Marshall in 1910. He preceded her in death in 1934. She then married Zina Duddleson in 1941. He preceded her in death in 1942.

    Surviving are three sons, James E. Marshall, South Bend, Thomas 0. Marshalll, St. Louis, Missouri, and Allen R. Marshall, Indianapolis; one sister, Mrs. Matilda Norris, Pendleton; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

    Two children preceded her in death.

    Funeral services were held at 2:00p.m. on Monday, September 17 at the Grace United Church of Christ, with the pastor, Rev. John H. Krueger, officiating.

    Burial was in the Culver Masonic Cemetery. The Bonine Funeral Home, Culver, was in charge of the arrangements.
