From the Logansport Daily Journal page 3 dated Aug. 27, 1882:

All the preliminaries for the extension of the Logansport branch of the Vandalia railway to Lake Michigan have been satisfactorily adjusted, and upon compliiance with a few easy conditions the contact will be closed, and the work will be commenced and pushed to completion.

Readers of the Journal are familiar with the route of this line to Marmont (Maxinkuckee), and will have no difficulty in following it to South Bend and the lake...
With these advantages before them, our citizens are asked to consider one of the conditions above named, which condition is that the right of way shall be furnished free to the new line thorugh our county. The estimated cost of this right of way is from $7,000 to $10,000 and it is proposed to raise the amount by subscription. A consideraable portion of this subscription has already been secured, and a committee appointed for that purpose will make an effort to raise the remainder during the present week...

1883 - Oct 6 - The.Vandaiia railroad company commenced laying iron at Marmount a day or two ago, and-withln a short time the tract will be completed from Maxinkuckee lake to the Nickle Plate railroad, a distance of about three miles,- Logansport Pharos Tribune

1884-1897 - built by D. G Walters - 1884 by D. G. Walter who ran it as a hotel for 13 years.

1888 - Jun 16 - Dan Walter, the accommodating proprietor of the lakeside hotel at Marmont, was visiting with his Bremen friends the latter part of last week. Dan ia still making improvements to his hotel and has the best accommodations for pleasure seekers. - Bremen Enquire

1889 - Jul 16 - Both stories of the Lakeside hotel have been provided with wide verandas. The house has been freshly painted and presents a very inviting appearance.

1890 - Sep 13 - The Lakeside Hotel remains open the year round

1895 - Lake Side Hotel - D. G. Walter, prop.

c. 1895 - D. G. Walter manager and owner. Jerome Flagg. - Mr. Lambert; said to have owned it in order names are given. The above ad is from the Maxinkuckee Agriculture Fair Bulletin.

1897 - Dec 31 - We are pleased to note that Jerome Flagg has taken possession of the Lakeside hotel, and will soon be able to entertain properly the traveling public. We understand he will at once make some very decided improvements upon the house, and will have everything pertaining to the same first-class. We cordiallv recomend him to the traveling public

1898 - Jan 7 & 14 - Jerome Flagg, the new proprietor of the Lakeside hotel, is now prepared to entertain all those who desire entertainment at this popular house Mr. Flagg is one of the best known hotel men in Marshall county hence has gained an enviable reputation as a hotel caterer. For reasonable prices and- first-class accommodations gjve him a call

1898 - Jan 21 & Feb 4 - Just remember that the Lakeside Hotel is now under the control of that prince of landlords, W. H. J . Flagg, who is sole proprietor. His reputation as a first class manager is known far and near by the traveling public, hence he is already receiving a liberal patronage from that source. His culinary department is unexcelled and his beds are as good as the best.

1898 Feb 11 - the Lakeside Hotel is at present doing a “land office business,” and under the management of that venerable gentleman Mr. W. H. J. Flagg, you can rest assured that everything is carried on in firsrt class style

1898 - W. H. J. Flagg, Prop.; and yet another ad states Mrs. John S. Bush, owner.

1900 - May 11 - The Lake Side Hotel is receiving a new coat of paint.

A June 1901 issue of the "Maxinkuckee Chatter" gives the location of the Lakeside Hotel as:

Opposite Kreuzberger Park one block west of the depot"

1903 - Apr 16 - The Lakeside Hotel, after being newly painted and thoroughly renovated throughout, has been opened and is now ready for business. This hotel, under the direction of landlord Bush, has become a very pop ular hostelery. The . tables are supplied with the very b-st the market affords, and the other aecommadations can not be excelled.

Found an ad in a May 1903 issue of Culver Citzen and John S. Bush was the proprietor and the it was located two blocks west of the depot this fits the location.

1903 - May 21 - Wanted — A good competent cook at the Lake Side hotel. Good wages, lady prefered.—John S. Bush, proprietor

1903 June 25 - Death of Mrs. Bush. - Mrs. John S. Bush died last Monday from a complication of diseases.

1904 - May 19 John Bush is having a cement walk built along the Lake Side Hotel.

1905- Apr 6 - .John Bush has opened the Lakeside Hotel for the summer season and solicits the patronage of the special invitation to those who Have favored him in the past. Excellent accommodations will be given and courteous treatment extended to all.

1905 - Apr 6 - Mrs. K. A. Garvin has returned from Topeka Kansas, and will assist Mr. J. S. Bush in the management of the Lakeside Hotel

In the 1905 Directory for Culver (title etc. unknown) - is listed:

The 1906 Sanborn Fire map places it and gives the the name also:

1908 - Apr 9 - L. B. Simcox has taken over the management of the Lakeside Hotel

An Old Landmark Passes into the Possession of a Newcomer.

J. S. Bush last week solf the property known as the Lake Side Hotel to Weillington Rush for $2,400.

Mr. Bush and the family of his son-in-law, Albert A Watkins,, operator at the depot, will take poissession Jan. 15 if the present occupant, L. B. Simcox, can find another house by that time; otherwise not until April 1.

The new owner will occupy the property as a residence only, and not for hotel purposes.

The Lake Side was built in 1884 by D. G. Walter who ran it as a hotel for 13 years.

Ut was then sold successively to Jerome Flagg., Mr. Lamber and Mr. Bush.

1910, Feb 3 - The deal for the Lakeside hotel property is off. Mr. Rush had been informed by the owner, J. S. Bush, that he and his wife had concluded not to make the deal

1910 - Oct 13 - The Lake Side Hotel - Mr. and Mrs William Vanmeter have leased the Lake Side hotel for a year and are already having a nice run of business.

1911 - Apr 27 - Sale of Lakeside Hotel

The Lakeside Hotel will be sold at public sale by the administrator of the estate of John S. Bush next Saturday at 10 a.m.

Wm. Vanmeter has a lease on the property untul next September with an option until January

1911 - May 4 - The Lakeside Hotel Sold

There were two bidders for the the Lakeside Hotel property last Saturday - Willington Rush, representd by A. A. Watkins, and Mrs. John S. Bush<

Rush bid $2,125, and Mrs. Bush $2,150, and the property was sold to her.

The appraised value was $2,000

1911 - Oct 12 - William Vanmeter has bought Art Fishburn's house on South Main Street for $1,074 and will begin vacating the Lakeside Hotel this week

1920 - May 19-May 26 - Lakeside Hotel For Sale

The Lakeside Hotel in Culver will be sold at auction on Thrusday, May 27, at 1 p.m.

Terms - $500 cash on day of sale and $500 wen papers are delivered. Six, 12 and 18 months time on balance. Mrs. Lydia B. Bush

1920 - June 9 - The Lake Side Hotel was sold at auction last week for $1970 to S.E. Medbourn. There were two other bidders. Mr. Medbourn bought the property as an investement and has not yet formed any plans for its ultimate use.

The Lake side was built in 1884 by D. G. Walter for a hotel which he conducted for 12 years or so

Jerome Flagg of Agros then became its owner, and after passing thorugh one or two hands the late John Bush bought it more than 15 years ago, and ran it till his death.

The building issubstantially constructed, the frame being of oak and the siding of white poplar.

1920 -- Sep 15 - Spangler Buys Lake Side

George Spangler has bought the old Lake Side hotel recently sold at auction to S. E. Medbourn. It is his intention to place it in good repair as a home for himself and family and to fit up the chambers for rooming purposes. He will also build a large garage in the rear of the building.

1920 - Dec. 22 - the Old Lakeside Hotel has been wonderfully improved since George Spangler bought the property both outside a and inside have been renewed, which gives it an invivting appearance.

1921 The Outland's purchased it and later George Spangler purchased it and was as known as the Spangler Hotel during this time. It was said to have had 30 rooms.

1921 - Sep 14 George Spangler has bought the Lake Side Hotel and plans to make it into a home.

1924-1937 - 'F' = probably Frame - and on the back of the lot is a building label Garage & Cars

1924 - Jan 16 - George Spangler has bought the grocery store near the depot ... He has been operating a taxi line from the Indiana House from some time.

1919 Nov. 12 - George Spangler and his son Bryon are in the auto livery business with two cars.

1924 - Mar 5 - Improves Store - George Spangler ...Mr. Spangler contemplates building a double deck back proch on the Indiana house this spring.

An Add of 19 Mar 1924 refering to it as the "Indiana House" and the garage as the "Indiana Garage"

1930 - George W. & Maggie C. Spangler. During this time it was refered to as the Spangler Hotel and also the Spangler Boarding House. But it is not to be confused with the Allegheny House which also had been referred to as "Spangler Hotel" by some.

Listed 425 Lakeshore Drive No. 15, 16, 17, 18 & 19. on the 1930 census dated April 2/3 Living there are Frank L Brooke, wife Chloe, children Laura C & Alfred E; Arthur J Hewes wife Clara A, children Helen A, Bernard A, Robert L & Francis E; Clifford L Overmeyer Clara R wife & Dona J. daughter; William Murphy, wife Lorena F, children Robert W & Bennie L; and Daviovberyy J, wife Nettie C, children Josephine N & Richard C. Confusing is that both Frank L Brooke & Arthur J Hewes is listed as "0" indicating Owner; Clifford L Overmyer, William Murphy & J Daviovbery are listed a "R" indicating Renting and that William Murpy stated that his residence in 1940 was the same place and or as translated in an abstraction "Residence in 1935: Same House - On Alley, Culver Town, Union, Marshall, Indiana, USA"

Bryon Spangler ' son of George W. and Maggie C. Spangler was to have ran a car repair shop in the garage at the rear of the property. The is proven by 1937 Sandborn map in which there is a building at the back of the lot and it is labeled 'garage'.

1940 - listed as 425 Lakeshore Dr. in almost ineligble writting is "On Alley". Residing there by the 1940 census is Frank & Chloe Brooke; Ralph & Clara Brueger; William Murphy wife Lorena and Children Robert W & Bennie

David Burns said that the Kreuzberger Saloon was later called the Lake Side Hotel; which is an error but could be possible, more reasearch will. have to be done.

1948 - Aug. 25 - Mrs Margaret Spangler Died Here Saturday

Mrs. Margaret Christine Spangler, age 80 years died at her home on Lake Shore Drive at noon Saturday.

She was the widow of George Spangler. She had been ill two weeks.

Surviving are a son, Bryon of Indianapolis; a sister, Laura Gauger, and a brother Frank Knauer, both of Lafayette

She was a member of the Maxkinkuckee Meethodis church, the Home Economics Club, and the W.S.C.S.

Funeral services were at her home on Monday afternoon and burial was in Poplar Grove cemetery. Rev. Quentin L. Hand had charge of the services.

1950's - 1960's - Guy & Rhoda Price

My grandparents owned it prior to them.

Guy & Rhoda Price (parents of my Dad - Harold).

They purchased it in the 1950's, don't remember exactly when they sold it - probably early 1960's..... moved back to Rochester, IN.

Your description of the inside was pretty good. However, the kitchen was actually at the back on the "east" side... we would pull our car between the house and the cement block "garage". My Dad (who was also a cabinet maker) had home made cabinets in Grandma's kitchen and she loved them. They did occupy the west part of the first floor as their "private quarters".

I wish I had some pictures of the building for you, but I do not. I do remember that when we had parades from the school to the park (summer time band).....they would sit out on the enclosed front porch and watch us go by....

In The Culver issue of the Aug, 1 1951 - a step grandaughter, Miss Florence Louise Ruger, of John Bush wrote " My step-grandfather, John Bush owned and operated the Lake Side Hotel, directly across from the residence of a family by the name of Speyer. It had an upper and lower porch that ran across the front and to one side. I have often wondered it is is still standing.

? - 1960- 1972_- Dale R. & Emra Jane Long 433 Lak Shore Dr.

The last owners of the property while the old hotel stood there was Dale and E. Jane Long. They used it as a personal resident and occassionally rented out the rooms upstairs.

I do not think it had been altered much from the layout of the orginal hotel. It had a large screened in porch - when you entered the front door it was a small foyer with a door to the west and door to the east and there was an open stairway to the rooms above, if I remember correctly the lower portion of the hotel was divided as such: the east room was one large room subdivided by wooden beams on both walls and the ceiling the hieght of the room was 14 feet or better - the west side of the builing probably had been living or private quarters for the hotel managers - and the kitchen. I never was upstairs - but I assume much of the furniture within the structure was that of the old hotel. Much of the woodwork in it had been left untouched by paint over the years. I now wish that I know what the building was - had paid more attention to detail - There was a large block building or garage at the back of the lot that ran the full length of the property east to west.

The Long Family moved to Bradenton, Flordia in May of 1972.


1972 - 19_ empty Lot



It burned in May 1972 sometime after 11 p.m the fire was discovered and burned well into the early morning hours. The only photo that I know of that exists for the hotel is the one taken during the early morning hours of the fire, that has surfaced several years ago



The two lower window the first on the right or to the north was the kitchen and the other was the dinning room area the the big room. The Stalling family bought the empty lot and finally had a house house on it.



For many years it was represented by an empty lot years owned by Stallings. Now a two story house sits there which was built about 1998 at what is now 422 Lakeshore Dr., the corner of Lakeshore Dr. and Harding Court.
