Section 21 History 1835-1922

1902 - Dec. 8 - William H. Wilson, Dorah O. Wilson to Ezra E. Hawkins to Ezra E. Hawkins
    A tract of land in Town of Culver City, west of the Winamac Road, situated in the south east corner of the South 1/2 of the North 1/3 of the North East 1/4 of Section 20 and in the south west corner of the South 1/2 of the North 1/3 of Lot No. 1 in Section 21 in Township 32 North, Range 1 East. described as follows:

    Commencing at a point at the south east corner of one acre tract now owned by the Evangelical Association, and on the west line of the Winamac Road, from thence running south on the west line of the Winamac Road line of the WIinamace Road 91 feet, thence west 264 feet, thence south ?N. south underlined? parallel with the WInamac Road 66 feet, thence east 264 feet to the west line of the WInamac Road, thence north along said road 66 feet to the place of beginning of the tract hereby conveyed.

    The intention being to convey a tract 66 feet north and south by 264 feet east and west in the south east corner of the tract of land conveyed to these grantors by David Hawk and wife April 30 1902 by deed recorded in Deed Record No. 69 page 517, of the records of Marshall county, Indiana.

by newspaper abstracts of real eastate sales it appears that Ezra E. Hawkins pruchasesd the Wilson properties at 427 S. Main and 419 S. Main at two seaperate times this one being:
    1902 - Dec. 18 - Wm. H. Wilson and wife, warranty deed to Ezra Hawkins, lot in Culver W. of Winamac Road., in Secs. 20, 21, T32,R1 $325. - Weekly Republican - Plymouth. - Note this would be an empty lot by the $ amount on the corner of now Hawkins court & Wiinamac Rd .


1917 - Grocery Store - Rev. J. E. Young

1921 - J. E. Young. This map was drawn about Sept 21 1921, as a continuation of the abstract for 419 S. Main and shows the Young lot as 73 feet wide (north and south) and 103 feet long east and west.


1922 - Mar 8 - this is the small store - NOTE it states "New building"


Nov 13 1923 - Home Nearly Complete
    The New house of J. E. Young on South Main Street is about completed and will probably be ready for occupancy within the next two weeks. It is of the bungalow type and is quite an addition to the south end community Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Young moved into their new home on south main street Monday, Mrs and Mrs Herman Young- and family moved into the house vacated by J. E. Young's on Tuesday


1923 - Nov. 14 - J. E. Young on South Main Street is about completed and will probably be ready for occupancy within the next two week. It is of the bungalow type and isquita an addition to the south end community (Address is now 435 S. Main


1923 - Nov 21 - Mr. and Mrs J. E. Young and family moved into their new home on south Main Street Monday.



The 1924 and 1937 Sanborn fire maps comfirm the Store status by the building being marked as "S".

It has always been a part of the lot of 425 S. Main St. and the buildings can not be divided down into seperate properties. As lot is not large enough for either.

1926 - Mar 24 - J E. Young to Install Gasoline Filling Station
    J. E. Young merchant on the south end of Main Street, will install a gasoline filling station in front of his store room to take care of the motor traveling public in that end of town.

    The erection of this will be made within the next few weeks.


1927, Oct 5


1927 - May 11 New Laundry Truck - Mr. J. E. Young, local agent for the Ideal Laundry co., of South Bend, is driving an attractive laundry truck in his work for that company. The new vechile can now enable Mr. Young to serve the East Side this su,,er

1936 - Apr 29 - To Close Laundry Route
    Due to illness J. E. Young will discontinue his laundry route and the Slick Ideal Laundry of South Bend will close its route here. Mr. YOung has been their agent for a nnumber of years.


1936 - Jun 10 - Remodeling Store
    J. E. Young is remodeling and restocking his soe on South Main Street and plans to be open for business as usual with a week


    He was recoverd from the illness that forced him to give up the laundry agency he had jeld 14 years.


19?? - Lester P. Young is residing next door at 425 S. Main which is a part of this lot.

1952 - Miriam Young is residing next door at 425 S. Main which is a part of this lot.
