Young, who is engaged in laundry, cleaning, shoe repairing and variety goods at Culver , Indiana: "Please credit me with another year's subscription. Funeral Rites For Rev. John E. Young

Rev John Everett Young, age, 71, retired Evangelical minister, died at his home her Sunday after an illness of several weeks.

He was born near Emmettsville, Ind.

His early years in the ministry were with the Mehodist Episcopla church in Nebraska, but most of his service was with the Evangical church in Indiana.

He served the Culver church from 1913 to 1915, and returned here from Greenville, O., to retire.

Since 1917 he operated a grocery store on South Main STreet, and for several years has a laundry route until his health forced him to give it up.

Surviving are the widow; a daughter, Mary, at home; three sons Lester, Harold and Herman all of Culver; five grandchildren; a sister Miss Cora Young and a brother, Frederick Young, both of near Portland, Ind.

Funeral Services were held in the Evangelical church Tuesday afternoon with Rev. R. L. Haley, assisted by Rev. J. H. Rilling of South Bend, officating.

Interment was in the Culver Masonic cemetery. - 14 Feb 1940 - Citizen pg. 1



Rev. John E. Young



Rev. John E. Young, son of Jacob and Mary M. YOung (deceased), was born No. 9, 1868, at Emmettsville, Randolph co., Ind. and departed this life at his home in Culver Feb 11, 1940. His age was 71 years, three months and two days.

NOv. 11, 1891 he was united in marriage to Zadie D. Sturgeon.

To this marriage were born five children one child dying in infancy.


Rev. Young was converted when a young man of 16 years of age and united with the Emmettsville Evandelical church. Soon after his conversion he felt his call to the chiristian minsitry,a nd began preparation by attending the Ridgeville Normal College. About this time he transferred his membership to the Methodist church and was ordained an Elder in 1906.

In 1900 he was stationed at Leigh, Nebr., and while he was pastor at this place a new church was erected and dedicated. In 1901 and 1902 he served in Allen, Nebr. Feeling his need for further preparation for the work of the ministry, he returned to Indiana and entered Taylor University at Upland,, graduating June 8, 1904. In 1905 he served Point Isabel Circuit and in 1906, bt Burket Circuit. Because of poor health he retired for two year.

He transfered to the Evangelical church and served the following fields in the Indiana conference: Defiance Circuit, 1908 and 1909; Portland CIrcuit 1910 and 19111; Culver circuit 1913 and 1914; New Paris Circuit 1915; and Greenecille circuit 1916.

In 1917 he retired from active work of the ministry, and located in Culver, where he operated a shop and store with the exception of three years when he was employed at the CUlver Military Academy

He was a true and faithful christian. The last time he was in church, or near the last time, he gave a good testimony, saying: "I know th Lord Jesus Christ has power to forgives sins. He saved me 66 years ago and still keeps me".

Rev. Young had been in failing health for several months and went to be with the Lord Sunday monring at 2 o'clock. We will mess him but our loss is his gain, and we would say to our heavenly Father, "Thy will be done".

He leaves his companion, four children Lester, Herman, Mary and Harold Young; five grandchildren; one brother Frederick YOung; sone sister Miss Cors Young; and one niece, Mrs. Edna CHalfant of near Portland, Ind.; alsom other realtives, many neighbors and a host of friends throughout the church were he served

Mrs. J. E. Young Died Here Satyrday Night

Mrs. Kenzadie Dell Young, age, 78, widow of the late Rev John E. Young passed away at her home on South Main Street late Saturday night after an illness of seven months

She was born at Liber, near protland, Ind., on Spt 18, 1886.

When eleven years of age she moved with her family to Kansas, where she spent several years returning to Jay county when a young woman

After her marriage to Rev. Young, she lived in Nebraska, Ohio and Indiana and had lived in Culver since 1913.

Rev. Young preceded her in death in Febrary, 1940.

Surviving are one daughter Mary, at home; three sons, Lester and Herman of Culver, and Harold of Rochester; five grandchildren and one great grandchild; and one brother, P. R. Sturgeon of Indianapolis

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Evangelica United Brether church., where she was a member, with Rev. F. C. Wacknitz officiating.

Burial was in the Culver Cemetery.

1913 - the Culver church (EUB) petitioned the Annual Conference to be detached from the Culver Circuit and be made a station. Rev. J. E. Young, father of Lester P. Young, was pastor when this change was made from a mission to a station

1915 - Apr 15 - Rev. J. E. Young and W. S. Easterday returned Monday from the annual Evangelical Conference at Kendallville. Mr. YOung has been assigned to the church a at New Paris. The new pastor for the culver church is F. L. Snyder

1917 - Ap 18 - Rev. J. E. Young, recently of Greenville, Ohio, has removed to Culver to make it his future home.

On the 1920 census they were at 209 Main St; north or south was not indicated.

1923 - May 21 - Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Young and family moved into their new home on south Mains St. Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Young and family moved into the house vacated by the J. E. Youngs on

Rev, YOung is displaying a vegetable that is new in Culver - a New Guinea Buiter Vine. While it looks somewhat like a gourd, it is prepared for eating the same way an eggplant is, and tastes very much the some, too. He had never heard of the plant before ordering it from a see catalog, but the description applealed to him so de decided to try it is his garden. One of the plants weighed 16 1/2 pounds and another 17 pounds. The largest measured three feet 9 1/2 inches from tip to tip. One vine has been known to bear 75 of the plants. Rev. Young was born near Emmersville, Ind., and has served as a minister in the Evangelical and Methodist churches. HIs first pastorate was in Nebraska, but most of his services has been in the Indiana conference of the Evangelical church. He was pastor of the local church form 1913 to 1915, and returned here from Greeneville, O. to retire. Since 1917 he was operated a grocery store on South Main Street

John died before May 3, 1940 when the census was taken; by obituary he died on 11 Feb 1940.
