Two Instructors Honored at CMA

    The second of Culver's pending retiress, Mr. Wallace Helber, has been associated with the Academies since 1956.


    A graduate of Southeast Missouri State College (1941) he earned his master's degree in education from the University of Missouri in 1955 and an MARY degree in earth sciences from Indiana University i in 1968. Poet graduate credit include those earned at the American Iniveristy, the University of North Carolina, Denver University and Earlham College.

    Helber has been a teacher of chemistry, geology, astronomy, and biology at Culver and in his spare time, has established himself, as well, as an accomplished organic gardener.

    In 1969. he was a contributing author to Chemistry: Experimental Foundations, a secondary school textbook published by Prentice-Hall. Inc., whose writing team was headed by Dr. Robert W. Parry of the University of Michigan.

Retired science instructor Wallace Helber died May 10, 1999, in Culver, Indiana. He was 84

Mr. Helber came to Culver in 1956 from Bonne Terre, Mo.

He taught chemistry, geology, astronomy and biology, retiring in 1979 as a master instructor after 23 years.

He was a contributing author to "Chemistry: Experimental Foundation", s secondary school textbook published by Prentice Hall Inc.

A musician and an accomplished organic gardner, Mr. Helber also served as director of
Woodcraft Nature study.

He was a graduate of SOutheast Missouri State College, received his master's degree from the University of Maryland, and a master's of arts in teaching from Indiana University. Mr. Helber did post-graduate work at The American University, the University of North Carolina, University of Denver and Earlham Collegge.

He was a veteran of the Army Signal Corps, serving in the Pacific Theater from 1941-45.

Mr. Helber is survived hy his wife Phyllis, three daughters Susan Helber of Atlanta, Janet Parper and Vicki Helber both of Bloomington, Ind.; and three brothers, John of Culver, Charles of Raytown, Mo. and Joesph in Maryland.
