John Zechiel Family

John Gottlieb Zechiel Birth: Mar. 6, 1832 Pennsylvania Death: Jan. 14, 1923 Culver Marshall County Indiana Burial: Zion Cemetery Union twp. Marshall County Indiana son of Johann Friedrich Zechiel and Catherina Haag

Venerable John Zechiel son of Frederick and Catherine Zechiel was born in the state of Pennsylvania, March the 6th 1832 and departed this life in Culver Indiana on January the 14th, 1923, bringing the space of his earthly pilgrimage to 90 years 10 months, and 8 days.

When he was a child of six weeks, the family moved to near Marion Ohio., where he grew up to manhood. He became an apprentice of the blacksmith trade and followed that trade in the village of Middletown now Prospect, Ohio.

On The 23rd of May 1853 he was united in hold wedlock with Rosina Behner, by Rev. Henry Laper. This union was blest with six children, four sons and two daughters namely: Mary A., Louis Christian, Catherine, Henry, John C., and Albert, all of whom are living and present here today, save sister Mary, who has preceded him to the spirit world. In the year 1854, he with his family located upon the tract of land now known as the Zechiel Homestead, near Culver, Indiana and he became one of the "Early Pioneers" of Marshall county; and while here he pursued the occupation of farming he never ceased from plying the anvil and the forge - at once a source of compensation for himself and a convenience to his neighbors in this community.

After many years of hard and diligent toil, in order that he might be in a measure relieved from such close application, he left the farm and moved into the village of Marmont, now Culver. This was the year 1885.

The home he occupied was upon the site now occupied by the Slattery store. It was while living here - more definitely, in the year 1889, that his beloved helpmeet Rosina was taken from his side which left him in his loneliness full many a year during which time his daughter, the beloved Mary, acted as housekeeper, an until he moved into the house now occupied by Mr. Ezra Koontz.

About the year 1893 he was again united in marriage, with Marian Mercer with whom he lived most happily until the year 1910, when she also, was called unto her heavenly reward, thus leaving him once more to walk alone until the end of the journey was reached.

After a few years of residence in his own dwelling he made his home with his son, Louis where he spent his final years, even until the measure of his years were accomplished and he was gathered by the Angel Reaper into the garners of his God.

Being the pioneer in this county, he, like others of those early days, endured many privations and suffered many hardships, but came through them all, a MAN! By dint and industry and economy, he accumulated sufficient of this world's comforts to sustain him in his declining years.

In his early youth he was received in the Evangelical Lutheran church, by the rite of holy baptism and confirmation. Upon his removal to this state of Indiana, he with his wife, became members of the Reformed Church, and both were charter members of the Zion congregation, he being for many years on of its foremost leaders. Here he was alternately deacon and elder, and also the first Sunday School superintendent. In all these various capacities he served his Lord and the church conscientiously and well. Nor task too arduous and no trail too hard form ho to do to the best of his ability. Likewise, upon his removal to into the community of Culver, his loyalty to the church of his choice prompted him to begin the enterprise of a Reformed church here, and the outcome of his efforts is that which we see and enjoy in this temple of worship today. It it had not been for his purposefulness of heat, there would probably be no Reformed church in this thriving an prosperous city. It was upon the removal of his beloved wife of his youth, that in her honor her erected the first house of worship. But the strength of his hears began to wane, and likewise he began to yield his leadership into others qualified to take up the tasks, to pursue them unto their ultimate accomplishment. His work was well begun, the day of his rejoicing was at hand.

It will not be necessary for us to dwell at length upon the sterling qualities of this man of God. His life of ninety years is an open book and he who runs may read. It is sufficient to say - "A Prince in Israel is fallen". A leader in the church had swept through the heavenly gates; a star has fallen from the religious skies of this community and its glean yet lingers in our beholding eyes.

To those who knew him best his life in "memoriam" will become a beacon light along the pathway of life - to light them toward the realms of the Eternal Day. Peace to his ashes.

It must be remarked that with the departure of "Uncle" John Zechiel as man of the community called him, the last member of the family of twelve has gone hence. His going was not by the untimely smiting of the Angel of death, but rather by the process of the developing fruit - grown ripe in the maturity of the years. He leaves to mourn his departure his five living children, fourteen grandchildren, and thirty-three great grandchildren, to whom his life will be a legacy not to be estimated in human values but in the values of the Kingdom of God.

The funeral services was held Tuesday afternoon at the Reformed church, the pastor, Rev. J. F. Tapy, officiating.

The pallbearers were Erza Koonts, Walter Hand, Wilbur Brown, Claude May, John Mitchell and D. H. Smith - Citizen Jan 17 1923

married 31 Mar 1882 Marshall county Indiana Lozetta White Birth: Sep. 14, 1863 Death: 29 May 1910 burial Burial: Masonic Cemetery Culver Marshall County Indiana daughter of Stephen White and Isabella Cordner White
Lozetta Zechiel was born Sept 14, 1863, and died May 19 1910 aged 46 years, 8 months and 5 days.

Mrs. Zechiel was the daughter of Stephen and Isabel White who emigrated from Philadelphia , Pa. in 1828 settling near Twin Lakes where the subject of the sketch was born. She was the youngest of a family of eleven children of whom three, together with her father and mother, have preceded her to the spirit world.

On March 30, 1882 she was united in married to Henry Zechiel of Culver. To this union were born three children, one daughter (dying in infancy) and two sons Willard and Ernest.

She leaves to mourn her seemingly untimely death a husband, two sons, three brothers - Joseph White of Plymouth, Thomas White of South Bend and WM. White of Plymouth; also four sisters - Mrs. Jane Burch of Hamlet, Mrs. Isabel York of Doniphan, Mo., Mrs. Tabitha York of Akron, O., and Mrs. Clara Stahl of Alliance , O. together with a large circle of distant relatives and friends.

In her girlhood days she was united with the Twin Lakes Reformed church and after her marriage transferred her membership to the Zion congregation near this place. When Grave Reformed church of Culver was organized she became one of the charter members.

Mrs. Zechiel began ot fail in health about one year ago., but her condition was not thought alarming until nearly three months ago when she was confined to her bed, and though she had every care that medical skill and the willing care that loving hands could render she grew gradually weaker until she passed peacefully away and without a struggle, surrounded by her family and friends as the sun was shedding his first ray upon the gladsome earth.

She was a devoted, loyal wife and a loving sympathetic mother. Her whole life bore testimony to her noble christian character. She had strong convictions upon moral questions and was very frank in their defense.

While the loss to the community, to the Sunday school and to the church seems appalling, yet all praise and honor, glory and dominion be to Him with is the resurrection and the life. We need not mourn as do those who have no hope, but in the blessed assurance, when the turmoils of life are o'er, of a glad reunion with those who have gone before us in the way of salvation, we look forward as becomes christian mean and women to the consummation of our blessed hope.

The funeral at the Reformed church on Saturday morning brought our an attendance seldom equaled in Culver. Rev. Mr. Michael preached the sermon and a double quartet of ladies sang music.

The pallbearers were D. H. Smith, Samuel Buswell, George Gar, Walter Hand, Albert Stahl, WIlbur Brown. The floral remembrances were numerous and beautiful.

"She reseth no. No more her breast
    Heaves with its weary breath,
Pain sits no longer on the brow
Where lies the clam of death.
Sunk to her rest, like tired child,
    She lies in slumber deep,
Soft folded in the arms of Him
Who giveth His beloved sleep." - Citizen May 26 1910
