Wesley Methodist Church - 511 N School

Methodist Church Add. Lot 7 - other lots were sold as early as 1952 or before.


The present building at 511 North School Street was opened in 1955 under the leadership of Rev. Kendall Sands. The membership at this time stood at over 600. Up until that time the church was on the southwest corner of Washington and Main street at 109 N. Main. Methodist history to 1955

1957 - Oct 23 - A new Methodist parsonage is in the making with bids beign sought and plans completed. It will be built to the rear of the church and of nnear coresponding architecture.

    Public Invited To Attend Open House next Sunday

    The entire public is invited to attend an open house at the new parsonage of the Culver Methodist Church on Sunday, Sept. 28, starting at 2 p.m., and continuing throughout the afternoon, Rev. Kendall E. Sands, pastor, announces.

    A committee from the W.S.C.S., composed of Mrs. Clarenco Bair Jr., chairman, Mrs. Ford Overmyer, Mrs. George Babcock, and Mrs. Robert Lindvall, will be in charge of the refreshments.

    Rev. Sands expresses the hope of the official board that every member of the community will tour the parsonage Sunday afternoon.

    The open house will follow the onsecration service which will be held Sunday morning in front of the parsonage after the conclusion of the morning worship service. Dr. Almon J. Coble, district superintendent, will officiate.

    Georgian Colonial Design

    The new parsonage, which matches the recently constructed church in its Georgian Colonial design, finished in brick with whits wood trim, is located on the church property which occupies an entire block flanked by College Avenue, Lewis, Slate, and School Streets.

    The parsonage, which is only a block from the school house, is west of the church with a full view of the school athletic field.

    The structure cost about $29,000, exclusive of furnishings, landscaping, and other extras. The house is of one and a half stories, 28 by 38 feet in size, connected to a. large garage and storage room by a breezeway adjacent to a patio.

    Grouped around the 14 by 26 foot spacious living room is a dining room, kitchen and breakfast area, one-half bathroom, and a den attractively finished in red oak panelling. The house is plastered throughout vith sand finish. Upstairs are three bedrooms, the master bedroom being 14 by 20 feet. On the same floor are a bath, generous closet space, and a linen closet.

    Under the house is a full basement with an outside entrance into the recreation room, which can also be used as a Sunday School room for the rapidly expanding church school.

    The utilities in the south half of the basement include a forced hot air furnace with oil burner, water heater, water softener, and laundry equipment.

    The parsonage was built under the direction of Mrs. Ralph A. Osborn Jr., who was also chairman of the church building committee, Mr Sam Allen, and assisted by able sub-committees.


1958 - Oct 1 - Open House Held At New Methodist Parsonage
    Open house was held from two to five o'clock Sunday afternoon at the new Methodist parsonage with approximately 400 attending.

    The committee in charge of the affair included Mrs. Ford Overmyer. Mrs. George Babcock. Mrs. Robert Lindvall. Mrs. C. E. Bair, and Mrs. Clifton Bodey.

    Rev. and Mrs. Kendall Sands greeted the guests and following a tour of the beautiful new home refreshments were served from a table centered with fall flowers in vellow and bronze and yellow candles.

    Presiding at the tea table were Mrs. Ralph Osborn Jr.. Mrs. Sam Allen, Mrs. Fred Adams, Mrs. James Miracle, Mrs. R. J. Ives, and Mrs. Charles Kaufman.

    Following the open house a surprise shower was held when gifts were presented to Rev. and Mrs. Sands for their new home. Mrs. W. 0. Osborn was in charge of the shower
