    Frederick David Lane, 92, of Columbus, passed away at 10:33 p.m. Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at Four Seasons Retirement Center. Frederick was born September 13, 1931, in Shelbyville, Indiana, the son of Herman Francis and Jessie Marie Frederick Lane.

    On November 18, 1994, he married Linda Lou Brabant.

    Mr. Lane graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1948. He entered Purdue University in September of 1951 and married Elizabeth “May” Kuhn on December 23, 1951. She preceded him in death.

    After graduating from Purdue University with a Bachelor’s Degree the following year, he went to graduate school and received his Masters Degree in School Admin- istration.

    Fred joined the United States Air Force in 1953.

    He studied meteorology at UCLA and Wheeler Air Force Base prior to a 3-year appointment at Kadina AFB in Okinawa. He returned home in 1957 and was stationed at Westover Air Force Base in South Hadley Falls, Massachusetts.

    In 1958, he was honorably discharged and moved to Culver, Indiana. He continued to serve in the Indiana Air Guard, retiring after 28 years with a rank of LTC.

    Frederick received a second Master’s Degree and started teaching for the Science Department at Culver Military Academy. Between 1975 and 1977, he was the chairman of the Science Department, and the following year became director of Culver Sum-mer Camps and Schools. He served in this role for 17 years.

    LTC Lane retired from Culver Academies in 1994.

    He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Evan Bayh and an honorary speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives, in 1994. As of 2014, Fred had been a member in good standing of the Masonic Fraternity for a period of more than 50 years. Fred served on the Board of the American Camping Association (ACA) for many years, and served as the interim director for the summer of 1997. He served as a representative for the ACA at the International Camping Association Meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia that summer.

    After his retirement, Fred and Linda spent twenty winters at Deltura Country Club in North Fort Myers, Florida. Fred was active in many activities including golf, softball, theater, church and volunteering as a tour guide at ECHO (Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization).

    They returned each summer to their home in Culver, Indiana to enjoy time with their family and friends on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee.

    They moved to Four Seasons Retirement Center in Columbus, IN in 2016.

    Survivors include his wife, Linda; children, Dr. Frederick R. (Carol) of Indianapolis, John (Dr. Cindy Mason) of Columbus, IN, Patricia (Robert) Heathcote, also of Columbus, IN, Mary Ellen (James W, Ph.D.) Kendrick, of Sante Fe, New Mexico; nine grandchildren, Amanda (Ross) Atteberry of Carmel, IN, Bryan (Tyra) Lane of Franklin, Chelsea (Kyle Kolpak) Mason Lane of Elizabethtown, KY, Tessa Lane of Galway, Ireland, Morgan Lane of India- napolis, Megan Heathcote of Chicago, Tyler Heathcote of NYC, Sami Heathcote of Columbus, IN, and Anna Kendrick of Northampton, MA; two great-grandchildren James Frederick Atteberry and Lily Elizabeth Atteberry of Carmel, IN; brother, Francis Lane of McKinney, Texas; brother- in-law, James Baldwin, of Lafayette; several nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Beverly Baldwin.

    In keeping with the family’s request, cremation will take place and a memorial service only will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Four Season Retirement Center Chapel with Pastor Karen Hargett and Rev. Howard Boles officiating.

    Military honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

    Inurnment will take place at Culver Chapel Columbarium in Culver, Indiana at a later date.

    Elizabeth May (Kuhn) Lane, 61, died at 6 PM Wednesday, June 9, 1993, in St. Francis Hospital, Beech Grove. She had been ill for six months and in the hospital since June 4.

    Born Jan. 23, 1932, in Rush County, IN, she graduated from Milroy High School, and came to the Lafayette area from Culver in 1978.

    Mrs. Lane was an account clerk in the business office of Purdue University's Department of Agriculture for 15 years. She received her bachelor's degree in supervision from Purdue's School of Technology in 1990, and she was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

    Surviving are two sons, Frederick R. Lane of Indianapolis and John D. Lane of Columbus, IN; a daughter, Patricia (Mrs. Robert D.) Heathcote of Durham, NC; a sister, I. Fay (Mrs. Harold) Durbin of Shelbyville; two brothers, Charles Kuhn of Waldron and Wilbur Kuhn of Manilla, IN; and four grandchildren. --Lafayette Journal & Courier - Jun 11 1993
