Carl M. Adams Sr.
No, those bars Carl is looking through are not at MIchigan city but as the ones that decorate a
window at the
State Exchange Bank were he is an assistant cashier, and a member of the Board of
Directors.
He has been associated with the bank since the fall of 1918, andat his position at the teller's
window has become a familiar figure to the many peope who do business at the bank.
He was born in HUntington, secured his early schooling near Bruce Lake, north of Kewanna and
moved to Culver when he was 12 years old, completeing his education here.
He has the distinction of being the first C. H. S. basketball leterman to have a son win the same
award, which Carl Junior did last season.
Mr Adams is very active in all communiyt affairs, having served as preident and secretary of the
Chamber of Commerce, president for two terms of the Parent-Teacher Association and is now a
member of the Union Township Advisory Board.

He moved with his parents to Bruce Lake Station, , Ind. when he was about 4 years old.
Father Henry served as postmaster there until the family moved to his father's Daniel's orginial farm where
twins Carl and Earl started to the Invincible (Overmyer District No. 7) School. Grandfather Daniel had given
the ground for the school for as long as the school operated which was unt Jul 1927.
In a few years the family moved to the 40 acres given them by father Daniel which was 2 miles east of Daniel's
and a short distance North of Bush Church. Carl's father, being a carpenter, built their own home and farmed the
land until 1910 when the moved to Culver where he retired.
Carl and Earl attended the Smallpox School. 1/2 mile away while living on the farm. Carl graduated from Culver
H.S. in 1918 and then went to work in the Culver Bank as teller, later, a cashier, and then became vice President
until his retirement in 1972.
Carl married Margaret Irma Schilling of Culver May 31, 1920 in Plymouth. She was born Aug. 12, 1901 at Knox and
graduated from Culver H.S. in 1920.
After living 30 years in Culver they now live in retirement at 520 South Shore Road on Maxinkuckee Lake.

For Carl M. Adams (1898-1982) and Margaret Adams, Culver days began a bit after the turn of the 20th century, when their
families moved to this lakeside community.
Margaret (Schiling) Adams was born in 1901 in Knox. The youngest of five children in the Schuyler-AManda (Colier) Schiling family.
The Schilling family; Margaret, Minnie, Clara, Sue, and Olviver moved to Marshall county soon after the turn of the 20th century.
Carl M. Adams and his twin brother, Earl, were born in Huntington, the youngest of eight children in the family of Henry and Mary
(Overmyer) Admas. henry Adams, a CIvil War veteran, with Carl, Earl, Blaine, Clay, Edith, Maude, Nbertha and Ethel moved to Bruce
Lake are of Fulton County and in March 1910 the family moved to Cuvler.
Dating days began for Carl and Margaret while in high school when both were active in extra cirricular activities and eevnts. Carl and
Earl were members of the varisty basketball team. Carl graduating in May 1918 joined the State Exchange Bank staff the same year
on September 18th.
He was married to Margaret Schilling, May 20, 1920 at Plymouth. The newlyweds new home on Lake Shore Dr. decame their home.
In 1954 the Adams moved into their nelwy built home on the south shore of Lake Maxinluckee.
Members of the Wesley United Methodist Church, the couple was associated with many civic events and activities. Carl and Margaret
welcomed their first son Carl Jr. in 1922 and second son Frederic in 1925. Carl's twin brother Earl was a World War II casualty in an
Atlantic crossing and nephew John R. Schilling was a World War II casuality on the Italian front, 1944. Their son Fred died in 1983.
The Adams have three grandson, Jeffery, John and William Adams, and a granddaughter Elizabeth (Mrs. Bradley) Walker.
Professional activity, health concerns, church, and civic interests were activating factors in serving the community.
As cashier, later as vice president, and a director of the State Exchange Bank, Carl Adams retired with 54 years of service.
He was honored at Plymouth in 1958 where friends and assoicates gathered in a surprise brithay reception and again in 1972 on the
occasion of his retirement.
In the widely publicized bank robberies 1921 and 1933, Carl was among those victimized in the 1933 robbery he was a hostage of the
robbers.
He served as treasurer of the Culver Methodist Church for 30 years..; as a member of Worls War II Rationing Board; and he served as
advisor tomany organizations.
The Adams were members of the Lake Maxinkuckee Association and Plymouth Country Club, State and National Bankers Association,

Carl M. ADAMS, 83, Culver , died at 9:55 p.m. Tuesday in Miller’s Merry Manor Nursing Home, Culver,
following an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 9, 1898, in Huntington to Henry and Mary OVERMYER ADAMS.
He had lived in Culver since 1910.
He married Margaret I. SHILLING May 31, 1920, in Plymouth; she survives.
He retired as vice-president of the State Exchange banks of Culver , Plymouth and Argos, and the Farmers
State Bank of Lapaz in 1968 after 54 y6ers. He was a member of he Wesley United Methodist Church, Culver
Lions Club, Rochester Elks Lodge and a 50-year Indiana Bankers Club member.
Surviving with the wife are two sons, Carl M. ADAMS Jr., and Frederic E. ADAMS, both of Culver , and four
grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald BOWMAN officiating.
Burial will be in the Culver Masonic Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bonine Funeral Home, Culver , from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday.
