Forest Ray Savage (1902 - 1923)
Popular Grove YOung Man Killes on Argos Crossing
Ray, the 21 year old son of Daniel Savage living in the Poplar Grove Neighborhood east of Lake Maxinkuckee,
was instantly killed Saturday evening between 7 and 8 o'clock on the Nickel Plate crossind in Argos
A frieght was going east past the depot and was having a hard pull to make the grade. A number of autos
waited on each side of the track to corss as soon as the frieght had passed. I came to a stop with the rear
end of the caboose hardly past the crossing, but far enough so that vechiles could crowd by.
Several crossed ahead of young Savage, who was driving a Ford car into town. Just as he drove his car on
the railroad track, of mecessity close to the rear wheels of the caboose, the frieght train made a lurch
backward, supposedly in preparation for going ahead again. The auto was smashed down underneath the
rear truck of the caboose and shoved down the track a short distance. The wheels of the caboose truck
were thrown off the track by the auto.
The young man had no chance to jump or save himself. His body was found jammed down in the
twisted remnants of the automobile under the caboose truck. Death undoubtedly cam instantly from a
terrible blow on the top of the head. The scalp was torn loose by the blow, but the body was not
mangled otherwise. No bones were broken.
Young Savage was one of ten children. some of whom are away from home. He was on his way to call
on an Argos girl at the time of the accident
The funeral was held at the Poplar Grove church at 2:30 Tuesday afternnon. Rev. Albert Vermillion conducted
the service.
Ray Savage was a cousin of Mrs. M. R. Cline and a realtive of the Listenbergers of Culver. - 4 Apr 1923 - Citizen
