Section 28 History 1835-1922 1938 - Jun 22 - Don Behmer Opens New Business On Lakeside

    Don Behmer has openes the Shady Point Boat and Auto Service, featuring grocery supplies, ice cream, cold drinks, boats and motors, gas service on pier for motor boats, speed boat rides, gas and oil, and cabins.

    The gas service station for lake boats is an innovation on Lake Maxinkuckee that should be welcomed by the many owners of motor boats

    The new business is located on the west side of the lake on Road 17



1939 - May 31 - Donald Behmer Opens Gargae on Long Point
    Donald Behmer announces that he has opened a garage business at his place on Long Point, which he will operate in connection with his boat service.


1944 - Nov. 22 - Sells Boat Business to Michigan Man
    Donald Behmer has sold his business on Long Point to Frederick Wallstead of Cassopolis, Mich., who plans to take possession Jan. 1.

    Mr. Behmer who has operated the boat and garage business for several years has made no plans for the future.

Don Behmer (1905-1994), grandson of Daniel G. through Clarence Behmer, launched what has been the Culver Marina for decades, originally as the Behmer Boat Company at 600 South Shore Drive on Lake Maxinkuckee. He sold it to Jack Campbell in 1953 and it later became the Culver Marina

1947 - Jan 15 - Buys Interest In Boat House - Donald Behmer has purchased of Roscoe Stevens his interest in the Sevens-Savage Boat House at the south end of the lake

1947 - April 9 - Purchased Boat House
    Donald Behmer has purchased the Savage share of the boat house on South Shore Road. He had bought the Stevens interest in the boat house some time ago and this purchase makes him the complete owner of the business.

Purchased in 1954 by Sam and James B. Allen. And sold in 1969

    In 1954 Sam and his brother, Bill, pruchased the Marina on Maxinkuckee's west shore rom Fred Wallstead.

    The men continued their jobs and the wives handled the boat house during the week. In 1958 Sam retired from Sealed Power and devoted his time to the Marina.

    There were gas pumps on their pier. For rent were metal boats and one powerboat. For purchase was fiberglass boats. T

    he Marina that had an area that held sweets and soft drinks. A path, at the lake's edge, would lead them to the store. Emily Allen was in charge of the store being sales-girl and purchasing agent.


1958 - Oct 1 Culver citizen - West Shore Boat Service Completes New Bbuilding
    Sam and Bill Allen, partners in West Shore Boat Service of Culver, are pleased with the completion of their new bay storage building

    Sam Allen who left his factory job in May to devote full tim to the boat business, says the new building is needed to keep pace with the growing demand for storage and refeinsihing

    Present storagge capacity woll be double with his added Space.

    The aluminum boat storage building located south of the Sam Allen home and west of a new road that will serve the property which the Allen families are opening into a sub-division the Allen Family overlooking Lake Maxinkuckee

Today as it appears - a vacant lot; with just the cement foundation of the boat house and area around it all that is left to remember this thriving business by. An aerial view of the area today - the yellow dots on the lake shore side reprsents the marina land. The light blue dots on the non-lakefront represents the lots that were part of the old railroad tracks

sometime during the 1990's it was also listed as 590 W. Shore Dr.; before that it had been listed as 594 W. Shore Dr. and now again it is listed that way again. Today it has no physical address.
