    CULVER - Mildred M. Barshes, 88, of Culver, passed away Dec. 28, 2005 at Miller's Merry Manor, Culver.

    Mildred was born on Jan. 4, 1917 in Chicago, Ill. to Grover and Josephine (Mangan) Harts. On Aug. 31, 1940 she married Alexander Barshes. Together they had two daughters. Mr. Barshes preceded her in death on May 11, 1997.

    Besides being a wife and mother, Mildred used her talents as a cook by working for and retiring from the Culver Community School Corp. Kitchen Dept.

    Mildred loved to go boating on Lake Maxinkuckee with her husband. She was a member of St. Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church and a founding member and past President of the St. Mary's Ladies Society. She will be remembered as a special lady who loved her daughters and their families.

    Mildred is survived by her daughters: Beverly (Jerry) Wolfe of Seymour and Joan (David) Evans of Yorktown; grandchildren: Derek (LaDonna) Wolfe of Portland, Ore., Eric Evans, Portland, Ore. and Rachael Wolfe of Washington D.C. and great-grandchildren: Audrey Wolfe and Clayton Wolfe, both of Portland Ore.

    Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two sisters.

    Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Bonine-Odom Funeral Home, Culver, where friends may gather with the family to celebrate Mildred's life on Saturday, Dec. 31 from 9 to 10:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church in Culver officiated by Father Glenn Kohrman.

    Memorials may be made to St. Mary's of the Lake Building Fund, the Sunday TV Mass c/o Diocese of Ft. Wayne - South Bend, 150 E Doan Drive, Ft Wayne, IN 46806 for St. Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.

      YORKTOWN - Joan C. Evans, 69, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at the Indiana University / Ball Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

      Joan was born September 4, 1942, in Chicago, IL to her parents, Alexander and Mildred (Harts) Barshes.

      She was a 1960 graduate of Culver High School and earned her Masters degree in Education from Ball State University. She taught school twenty-nine years at Yorktown Pleasant View Elementary and regularly substituted after retiring. Joan also taught school four years prior at Alexandria Elementary.

      She was a member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church, the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, and enjoyed helping others through the Harvest Soup Kitchen.

      She cherished the company of wonderful friends through an active book club and "The Breakfast Club", a long-standing group who has enjoyed many meals, trips, and jokes together.

      She is survived by her husband of forty-six years, David Evans; a son, Eric Evans and his wife, Rebecca of Portland, OR; one sister, Beverly Wolfe, husband, Jerry of Seymour, IN; and many nieces and nephews.

      Friends may call 1-5 p.m. Sunday, November 13, 2011 at the Gant Funeral Home, Yorktown Chapel.

      Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 14, 2011 at the Saint Mary's Catholic Church, 2300 West Jackson St. Muncie, IN 47303 with Father Andrew Dudzinski presiding. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 p.m. in the Culver Masonic Cemetery in Culver, IN.

      In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Harvest Soup Kitchen at 920 East harles St., Muncie, IN 47305 or the PVE Joan Evans Memorial Library Fund, 9101 W. River Road, Yorktown, IN 47396.
