Section 16 History 1835-1922

The next map which would of been the 1906 Sanborn fire map does not travel any further than the west side of State Street where the current fire station sits leaving us to draw to conculsions as to what sat in this are - but asssumption could be made that it was a part of the railroad property and the part or all of the grounds for the Colonade hotel.

By the 1908 map everything from what is State Street today - to the east edge end of the LakeHouse was one large lot labeled "5" Appears to be empty lot

A Lakeshore Lanes matchbook cover pre 1965 as it still had the "VI" as the prefix instead of numbers "842"

Remodling the grill area in 1969; and in 1969 installing new lanes and pin spotterrs and well as an outside facelift to the building. When the new lanes were installed an additional 6 feet was added to the back of the also allowing for the bathrooms located in the basement to be brought up stairs.

In the early 1970's the fryer of the Coffee Shop up against "common" the west wall caught fire - damage was limited to minor damges of paneling being pulled from the common wall and was able to open the next night.

The Dewitts were recongnized for their work in maintaining a historic building

When they opened the doors in 1953 they charge 35 cents a line to bowled and that priced remained to the day they closed their doors, as the owners.

1977 - Oct 1978 - Neidlinger Bowling Alley - Donald R. "Don" & Julie Mae
Mary Dewitt remained to manage and Jim came down and helped free of charge

It burned completely down on 22 October 1978, because of a new fryer. The fire call came in around 1:45 p.m. and firefighters worked until 10 p.m., with damage estimated at $500,000. The blaze, which was fought by Culver and several surrounding fire departments, was believed to have started in the fryer in the kitchen.

It was briefly feared the massive blaze would devour the buildings to the west, including the Lakeview Tavern, Hansen's, and the El Rancho Theatre. The flames were fought from the tavern rooftop and Plymouth's snorkel lift, and Culver firemen stayed through the night to keep the blaze from reigniting. Jack Houghton's recalls that the The tavern suffered some fire and smoke damage also and the entire east wall had to be replaced.
