From the Logansport Daily Journal page 3 dated Aug. 27, 1882:
All the preliminaries for the extension of the Logansport branch of the
Vandalia railway
to Lake Michigan have been satisfactorily adjusted, and upon compliiance with a few
easy conditions the contact will be closed, and the work will be commenced and
pushed to completion.
Readers of the Journal are familiar with the route of this line to Marmont (Maxinkuckee),
and will have no difficulty in following it to South Bend and the lake...
With these advantages before them, our citizens are asked to consider one of the
conditions above named, which condition is that the right of way shall be furnished
free to the new line thorugh our county. The estimated cost of this right of way is
from $7,000 to $10,000 and it is proposed to raise the amount by subscription. A
consideraable portion of this subscription has already been secured, and a committee
appointed for that purpose will make an effort to raise the remainder during the
present week...
1883 - Oct 6 - The.Vandalia railroad company commenced laying iron at Marmount a d

1905 - Apr. 5 - W. S. Easterday has secured the signatures of the business men
for the removal of the Adams Express Office from the depot to Easterday's store
in the business district, and for his appointmet as aget to succeed Mr. Shugrue,
resigned.
1919 - Jan 15 - Express Office Will Remove
A new location and another agent is being sought for the express company.
Under government management the business of the express company and the railroads
is being disassociated.
In the case of Culver the railroad agent must work more than eight hours if he
handles the express business. This he is not obliged to do.
Where the office will be located or who willbe the agent awaits the visit of the
district superintendent.
It is not probable, however, that the office will be brought uptown as the bulk of
the business is with the academy. For instance, on Satgurday morning there were 4
deliveries for uptown and about 40 for the academy
1919, Jan 22 - The Express Office
A building 20X20 is being put up opposite the depot on a lot leased from
T. E. Slattery for the accomodation of the express office.
It will contain two rooms, each 10X20 one for an office and the other for
storage.
A. L. Warner has been appointed agent and will take charge Feb 1 or sooner
if the building is ready.

1933 - Apr 19 - Dale Cromley Featured In Express Magazine
A picture of Dale Wayne, two year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira R. Cromley, as featured
along with a write-up of Culver in "The Express Messenger" April issue, published
by the Railway Express Agency.
The article follows: According to -Agent Ira A. Cromley at Culver, Ind there is a
comparatively new expressrepresentative in town;
"He is Dale Wayne, two years old, who, according to his proud father, "is the real boss
and has his delivery wagon and everything." And his wagon is labelled "Railway Express"
see the accompanying picture!
"Just a word about Culver, Ind., which has gained no little fame because it is the home
of the Culver Military Academy. Actually, the town has a popula tion of 1,502, but handles
a volume of express business far in excess of what one would expect, under the circumstances.
The academy, according to Agent Cromley, Sr., has a normal enrollment of around 675 boys of
preparatory school age and is second only to West Point in equipment and training, although
under private management.
"Every fall and spring, a large amount of baggage of the cadets moves, as well as during the
Christmas holidays, when the boys go home for the Yuletide season.
Then, the Academy has a constant incoming flow of traffic by express, which keeps the local
Railway Express office busy prac.tically all the time.
Nearby is Lake Maxinkuckee, the second largest and one of the most beautiful in the state. The
shores are lined with around 200 cottages and during the warmer months there is a migration of
summer , residents, who use the express service exclusively in obtaining their supplies, luggage
and equipment from their home towns.".
1935, Sep 11 - Shively In Charge of Local Express Office Again
C. L. Shively is again manager of the Culver express office, taking over the

on the farm
The duties of the express office are not new to Mr. Shively, who and served in
that cpacity for over five years until he had resigned to become postmaster in
April 1930, which office he held for four years.
He will continue to conduct his present business in addition to acting as
express agent.
The express delivery service will be handled by Dormand Mikesell.

location from the depot. |

1959 - Jun 17 - Obituary: Culver Express Office Discontinued...
The Railway Express Agency which is owned and operated by several of the
nation's largest railroads, and which fighting desperately for its own survival,
yesterday closed its Culver office in a general retrenchment to move to cut
down operating expenses...
Culver, Knox, and Rochester hereafter will be served by a consolidated office
at Plymouth. The Citizen understands that this community will have free pickup
and delvery as usual. But our readers are reminded that if you aren't home
to receive them your express packages will be returned to Plymouth for some
future delivery. People who live on rural routes will not be served...
The Citizen has long been critical of the miserable serivce given Culverites
by the Raiway Express Agency which has been making delvieries here just twice
weekly in recent months...
This criticism of the Railway Express Agency in no way concerns Clyde L Shively,
local agent, who did the best within his power to function for a moribund
organization whose days are definitely numbered...
Shively Agent Since 1923
"Dick" Shively first began as local gent in 1923 but he reliquished the job on
four different occasion during the period.
Mrs. Shively began serving the express company ever earlier in 1919, when her
father A. L. Warner, operated the Culver Agency...
Mr. and Mrs Shively have served the community conscienitiously through the years
and all patrons will miss this pleasant buisness relationship.
1961-1965/6, Mar - Kowatch Painting, Decorating,Plumbing, and Heating -
Jack B. Kowtach.
It is believed that this actually opened as a "new office" in the Express office building
but there is no ads giving an address for it - and there is ony the 1961 phone book
availiable that would possibly have an address for it.

1965 - Apr. 29 - There is no pictures of the
Cummins/
Johnson Building being razed and the new additon of 438 Lakeshore
being expanded onto the lot being constructed in the Citizen; also as with the name change
from Kowatch to Bennett's there appeared no formal announcement in the newspaper. It is
