1909 - Dec 9 - Bought by Bogardus - Garland Bogardus is the purchaser of the Wolford restaurant property at the depot.

1909 - Feb 9 - Notice of Application for License.
    To the Citizens of the Town of Culver, Union township, Marshall county, and State of Indiana:

    Notice is hereby given that the undersigned will apply to the Board of County Commissioners of said county, at their next regular term, to be held in the court house, in the city of Plymouth, in said county, commencing on the first Monday in March, A. D. 1911, for a license to sell spirituous, vinous and malt liquors,in a less quantity than a quart at a time, with the privilege of allowing said liquors to be drank on the premises where sold, for one year.

    The premises where said liquors are to be sold and drank are described as follows, to-wit:
      In a room thirty-six (36) feet long north south, by twenty-one (21) feet wide east and west, in a two-story frame building, situate the Toner's south end addition of lot to the number Vandalia nine (9) in addition A. D.Toner's to the town of Uniontown, formerly called Marmont, now Culver, in Marshall county, State of Indiana. Said building has twelve foot ceiling and fronts on Toner avenue, and said room is on the first floor thereof.
    I also give notice, that I will apply to said Board for the privilege of selling lunch and soft drinks and cigars in said room.

1909 - Dec 16 - Garland Bogardus, formerly of this city, has purchased the Wolford restaurant property, located near the Vandalia depot at Culver.- Argos Reflector

1911 - Apr 13 - Garland Bogardus has a buyer for his refreshment place at the depot. In case his application for a saloon license is refused by the court he expects te leave Culver and engage in business elsewhere. -- Citixen

1911 - Jun 1 - Bogardus Gets License. The mandamus case of Garland Bogardus to compel the county commissioners to issue a license to permit him to open a saloon in Culver has been decided in his favor by a special judge. -- Citizen

    In the case of Garland W. Bogardus against the Board of Commissioners of Marshall County Indiana, application for liquor license, court found d plaintiff to be a fit person to be intrusted with the sale of intoxicating liquor in the city of Culver Indiana, and that license should be issued to him. - - Jun 8 1911, Argos Reflector

    1912 - Feb 8 - Notice to Transfer License,

    One to another, in the same room.

    I, the undersigned, hereby give notice to the citizens of Union township, Marshall county. Indiana, that I will apply to the board of commissioners of said county at their next regalar term held at the court house, in the city of Plymouth, said county and state, commencthe first Monday of March, 1912, for permission to have the liquor license of Garland W. Bogardus transferred to me, and for the permission of selling spirituous, vinous and malt liquors in a less quantity than a quart at 8 time, with the privilege of allowing said liquors to be drank on the premises where sold, during the unexpired term; and also for selling soft drinks, lunch and cigars, The premises where said liquors are to be sold and drank are described as follows, to-wit:

1916 - Garland Bogardus is about to open a pool room in his building opposite the depot

1917 - "Three Times and Out"
    ... The next fire was of a more serious character.

    It was discovered breaking through the roof of Garland Bogardus's building opposite the depot, and before it was out it had run up from the chimney near the eaves to the comb of the roof.

    The fire company used two lines of hose, one on the outside and the other in the attic. The kitchen on the second floor at the rear of the building was thoroughly soaked, and water ran down into the pool room, but did small damage there. It will take $100 or more to make good the fire and water damage.

    Mr. Bogardus and his family think it was a piece of good luck that the fire occurred at 11 o'clock in the forenoon instead of at night. -- Citizen


1918 - Sep 16 - Garland Bogardus has changed his store and flat building opposite the depot to Chas. Schweidler for the latters property in Burr Oak. Mr. Schwidler will become a resident Culver.

    1919 Jul 16 - Charles Schweidler is enlarging his building by adding a paint shop to the first story and a two room extension to the second story

    1920 - Jun 2- Charles Schweidler is remodeling the interiot of his paint store. H will put in as hot water heating plant for the entire building

    1920 Aug 4 - Charles Schweidler is having the front store room of his building put into shape for Kunkel, hte academy tailor. He will occupy a back room as a paint store and shop

1925 - Dec 9 - Mrs. Kalamatiano moved her beauty parlor last week from the Hays building into the Scheidler building a few doors north

1925 - Feb 11 - another Firm in Culver
    Another new frm has opened for business within the city limits of Culver; G. M. Spangle and Son.

    This partnership has take over the Schweidler building across from the depot and will handle Logansport Ice Cream, doing retail and wholesale buisness.

    In addition, the father and son will operate a soda fountain and a short order luch counter

    Both men are well known in Culver and a good business is predicted for them

    At present , the new proprietors are putting the room in order and making some few changes in the arrangement of the fixtures

    They are now open for business.

1928 - March 28, Clifford C. Waite has opened his own plumbing shop in the rear of the Schweidler Cafe building across the street from the Lake Shore Garage



Johnson Hotel or Johnson Building / Indiana apartment building - c. 1934

1926 - Jun 26 - Scheweidler Bldg. Is Sold - New Bakery To Open -
    Fred Johnson of LaGrange, Ill. a former resident of Argos and brother-in-law of Dr. Kendall of that place, has purchased the Chas. Schweidler business and apartment building on Lakr Shore Drive at a price aroung $10,000.

    He has rented it to two LaGrange brothers who will at once fit the store room for a bakery, delicatessen shop and soft drink parlor.


1926 Jul 9 - - Lake View Bakery

    NEW BAKERY

    A new bakery has been added during the last week to the list of business concerns in Culver.

    W. Bergmann and J. Andresen, both of Chicago, are the proprietors of the Lake View Bakery, which is located in the business building on Lake Shore Drive formerly owned by Chas. Schweidler.

1930 Oct. 8 new buisness firm the Culver clothes Shop has been established in the Schweidler building by Gray Rector.

1931 - Jan - 7 - Remodels Building
    Fred Johnson is completing the remodeling of the former Schweidler building on Lake Shore Drive which he has made into four room partments on the first floor.

    He was installed all modern conveniences, the most complete of any apartment in town

    The building will be ready for use about February 1.


1931 - Jan 14 - For Rent -

1931 - WCMA to broadcast first program Sunday night from its new studios in the Johnson Building.

1933 - Jun 7 - Opens Ice Cream Parlor
    James Pruitt, of Logansport, has opened an ice cream parlor in the Johnson building on Lake Shore Dr.

    Desides a variety of fountain items, he is serving barbecue sandwiches.


1935 - 23 Jan - Charles Brandenburg of Argos has moved his barber shop fixtures to the Johnson Building where he will open a shop on the ground floor.

6408 Lakeshore Dr. - "S"

In 1924 no street/postal numbers were assigned on the Sanborn Map but on the 1937 map the street/postal numbers appeared. Many still did not use the street/postal numbers in their advertising etc. untill the late 1950's they hung on to the reference in relation of location from the depot.


1937 - May 12 - Opens Lunch Room
    Miss Beatrice Warner has opened a luncn room in the Johnson building opposite the town park and has named it "B's Beehive". She is being assisted by her brother Glenn.


1937 - Jun 23 - "Busy Bee" Johnson Buliding Mr. and Mrs. G. Cultice.

1937 - Nov. 10 - Beauty Shop Closes
    The Ideal Beauty Shop, operated by Muss Emily Ruzas, moved Monday from the Johnson building ro Bass Lake wehre the shop weill be conducted in the home of Miss Ruzas' mother at the south end of the lake.

    She had been in business for about two years.



1938 - March 28, Clifford C. Waite has opened his own plumbing shop in the rear of the Schweidler Cafe building across the street from the Lake Shore Garage

Shively Apartment Building 1939 - November 1 - To Open Floral Shop In Johnsnon Building
    The Culver Greenhouse will open a floral shop in the Johnson Building opposite the Town Park by Nov. 11, according to Byron Studebaker, manager.

    Gifts will be handled as well as a full line of cut flowers, ptted plants, etc.

    The shop is being opened as a convenience to those who have been unable to get out to the greenhouse.


1939 - Nov 15 - Floral Shop Opening - - The Culver FLorist will open their Uptown Shop in the Johnson Building, opposite the park Saturday, Nov. 18. An incitation is extended to the public to visit the shop and see the attractive merchandis on display. The complete announcemen in on another page.

1940 - Apr 10 - Close Uptown Shop
    The Culver Florist have closed their uptown shop in the Johnson buliding, and will now handle all sales from the greenhouse on South Main St.

    Bryon H. Studebaker, who has managed he shop, has become a representative of the Sayger Sports Syndicate, dealing in advertising specialties.

    Mrs. Studebaker and Mr. and Mrs. Ira McLane will operate the floral business


1944 - Aug. Fred R Johnson, 71 y ear of age, died of a heart attack at his apartment on Lake Shore Drive.

1944 - Sep 27 - Gift Shop to Open
    Earl Heller announcea the opening of a gift, shop in the Johnson Building opposite the Town Park this Saturday. He formerly operated the Culver Beach Lodge for several seasons and became known for quality merchandise and fair treatment of his customers.


1945 - Oct 17 - A transaction was completed Tuesday whereby Howard Doll bought the express business and building of Clyde L Shively. Mr. Shively will move his specialty shop to the Johnson Apt. Building.

1947 - Jun 4 - Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Thessin and daughter Beverly are occupying the apartment in Shively building...

1948 - Apr. 28 -... Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Strang Sr. will occupy the apartment in the Shively building vacated by the overmyer's

1949 - Jan 6 - H & H Cleaners Move - - The H & H Cleaners have moved their office from the Shively Building to the room formermly occupied by the 2X4 Lunch on East Jefferson

1952 - October 8 - Buy Apartment Building - Mr. and Mrs. Cary Cummins have purchased the Shively Apartmet Building at Lake Shore Drive and Liberty

1959 - Jul 15 - Cummin's Apartment Damaged By Fire
    Fire of unknown origin caused extensive damage at the Lake Shore Apartments on Lake Shore Drive at 12:35 on Wesnesday noon, July 8.

    The fire was discovered in the upstairs apartment of Mr. and Mrs. Cary Cummins owner of the building.

    The bathroom of the Cummins' apartment, the attic and roof were badly burned. The loss was partially covered by insurance.

1961 - Nov. 15 - Mr. and Mrs C. Cummins Resume Ownership of The Lake Shore Apartments
    Mr. and Mrs James Kruzick of Argos, who purchased the Lake Shore Apartments at 640 Lake Shore Drive Culver in September 1960, from Mr. and Mrs. Cary Cummins, have given up their contract

    Mr. and Mrs Cummuns, who purchased the apartment building originallly in 1952, have resumed ownership of the building and plan to do extensive redecorating.

1965 - April 29 - 'Here and There Around out Town' - ...The former Cummins Apartment building, across from the Town Park, and long a Culver landmark, is being razed to make way for progress in our Town.

1965 - Apr. 29 = There is no pictures of the Cummins/Johnson Building being razed and the new additon of 438 Lakeshore to be expanded onto the lot being constructed in the Citizen; also as with the name change from Kowatch to Bennett's there appeared no formal announcement in the newspaper. It is said that David Burns laid the limestone facing on the building
