    Poppes Purchase Local Shively Specialty Shop New Owners Come From Granger Al and Ellen Poppe of Granger, Ind., near South Bend, have purchased the Shively Specialty Shop at 644 Lake Shore Drive from Clyde L. Shively, veteran businessman. The Poppes have a son, Clyde, 16, and have bought the newly built home of Jack Sanders on College Avenue. Mr. Poppe is a former resident of this community and attended North Bend Township School from 1918 to 1924. He owned his own appliance business in South Bend from 1939 to 19411 and since that time has been employed by the F. H. Langsenkamp Company in South Bend as a heating and cooling engineer. The family are Methodists and have been active in church groups and Boy Scout work. Mr. Poppe is a member or the Moose Lodge and is still 4-H leader in Harris Township in which Granger is located. Mrs. Poppe is a member of the Rebekah Lodge and was employed as manager of the Mishawaka branch of the Chicago Motor Club. She may continue to give Motor Club servicehere. Clyde L. Sh4vly, who has been in business in Culver for 34 years, started the appliance store in 1934 after having served as Postmaster from 1930 to 1934. Mr. Shively plans to continue to operation of the railway Express Officem which he has managed here at various times since 1924, and to take care of his Justice of the Peace duties.


1957 - June 19 - New Merchants - This husband-and-wife buisness team, recent residents of Granger in St. Joseph county, are the new owners of the Shigely Speciality Shop at 644 Lake Shore Drive. Clyde Shively started the appliance store in 1934 after his four-year term as Culver postmaster. Mr. Poppe formerly lived in this community and attended North Bend Township High School from 1918 to 1924. He operated his own business in South Bend befer he became a heating and cooling engineer.

Ads for the remainder of 1957 and into 1958 give the 644 Laksshore Drive as address.


A 1st year anniversary ad of May 7, 1958 gives the address as 642 Lakeshore Dr.


An announcement for 'Grand Opening" at new location gives the address as 632 Lakeshore Drive.


    1960 - Nov. 30 - Open House At Poppe Appliance Store This Week - firm moved Into Larger Quarters

    The Poppe Applicance store has moved to larger quarters at 632 Lake Shore drive and will hold open house on Friday and Saturday of this week.

    The new location which will enable the Poppe's to better serve the public, was formerly Mrs. McCafferty's Art shop.

    Mr.and Mrs. Poppe dealers in G. E. appliances invite old customers and new to visit their store during their grand openeing when all merchandise will be sale priced.

    Coffee and cookies will be served and there will be favors for the kiddies and gifts for the grownups.


?-1968, Jun 31 - The DLP Gas Business - A N Poppe
    Jack Spencer Acquires- LP Gas Business

    Mr. Jack Spencer, of Spencer Gas, Plumbing and Heating, announces the purchase of the LP Gas Business from Mr. A N Poppe as of February 1, 1968.

    A large capacity bulk plant south of Culver enbles Spencer Gas to offer complete liquid petroleum gas service.

    Mr. Poppe will continue his appliance and service business as before

    Emil "Bud' Runhow bought out the business in 1972 moving the business to another building fursther south on Main st. but continued to use the building for storage.




It was annouced in the Jan 4th Culver CItizen that Poppe's was in the process of getting a new store front look
1985 - They sold out and retired.
