A memorial service was held at the Culver Memorial Chapel, Saturday, July 23, 2022 at 11 a.m. in Culver.

    General Bob Tanguy is a native of Logansort, Indiana. Bobby Tanguy, as he was known growing up. in Logansport, grew up with his sister Chloe Ann and his Mom and Dad's (Bea and Russell Tanguy) dairy farm just north of Logansport on Route 17. The Tanguy ancestors came and settled in Logansport around 1849. In addition to working on his Dad's dairy farm, Bobby Tanguy loved to play baseball and basketball during his spare time while growing up in Logansport.

    After Bobby Tanguy graduated from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII. After serving two years, he returned to the dairy farm for six months when Bob decided to enter the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. General Bob Tanguy graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. Bob also married his beautiful wife Mary Vallee at West Point a couple days after he graduated.

    After receiving his pilot wings in February 1953, General Tanguy served three years as an instructor pilot at Bryan Air Force Base, Texas, and then as a B-47 aircraft commander with the Strategic Air Command at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. In April 1960 he became an aide-de-camp to the commanding general, 7th Air Division, High Wycombe Air Station, England (where he learned to play polo...)

    Bob Tanguy returned the United States in September 1961 and was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as a staff officer in the Directorate of Operational Requirements. The following year Bob Tanguy left to attend the Experimental Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, California, and in June 1963 was assigned as an F-4C Category III Test Project Officer at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. While assigned at MacDill he also served as a flight commander and squadron operations officer. Following graduation from the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia in August 1966, General Tanguy left for the Republic of Vietnam, where he commanded the 480th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Da Nang Air Base. Bob Tanguy flew 186 combat missions in F-4 phantom jets during his one-year tour of duty.

    Upon returning to United States from Vietnam in 1967, Bob Tanguy served in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, Office of Legislation Liaison, Congressional Investigation Divisions in Washington. DC, until August 1969 when he entered the National War College.

    In August 1969, he entered the National War College at Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C. Upon graduation from the National War College in August 1970 (he concurrently earned his Masters Degree International Affairs from George Washington University) From there, Bob Tanguy was assigned to Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi, as Deputy Commander of Operations until July 1972 when he became Commander of the 14th Flying Training • Wing at Columbus. After serving as Commander at.. Columbus AFB in Mississippi for two years, Bob Tanguy was asked to assume command at the 29th Flying Training Wing at Craig Air Force Base, in Selma, Alabama, a distinguished and rare request to be the commander of two separate air training bases in succession in the U.S. Air Force. In February 1974, Bob Tanguy was promoted to Brigadier General and he became Inspector General for the Air Training Command at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. Not long after being promoted, Bob Tanguy was hand selected in July 1974, and he return to the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force as Deputy Director of Legislative Liaison at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

    In April 1977, General Bob Tanguy became Commander of the U.S. Air Force Southern Air Division, Tactical Air Command, Howard Air Force Base, Panama, and also Deputy Commander in chief, U.S. Southern Command, Quarry Heights, Panama. With these two positions, Bob Tanguy was promoted to Major General on 24 February 1978. After serving just over three years in Panama, in June 1980, Bob Tanguy assumed duty as Commandant of the Armed Forces Locatated in Norfolk, Virginia. The college is operated the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Major General Bob Tanguy decided to retire from active duty on Aug. 1, 1981. At the time of his retirement, he was a Command Pilot with more than 4,400 hours flying time in 15 different aircraft. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation emblem and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award ribbon with two oak leaf cluster.

    After retiring, Bob Tanguy went to work as the Director Department of Administration Transmitted for the Arizona State Legislature for the Honorable Bruce Babbitt, Governor.

    After a couple years in Arizona, in the mid 1980's, Bob and Mary Tanguy decided to his native state, Indiana where Bob earned his realtor and brokers licenses in Culver. Bob became owner and partner in Lake Realty and owner of Tanguy Real Estate before merging with Collins & Company Realtors Incorporated. Additionally, while working as a realtor, Bob Tanguy was hired by Hugo Baretta as the liaison between Mr. Baretta and the Armed Forces for the 9mm handgun contract.

    In January 2008, Bob and Mary Tanguy decided to move to Austin, Texas and then eventually resided in San Antonio, Texas at the Air Force Village II (now Blue Skys) to be close to folks they served with in the Air Force while keeping a condo at the Culver Cove in Culver so they could visit Indiana during the summer months.

    Major General Bob Tanguy is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary Vallee Tanguy, their two sons Mark and Sam (spouse, Jesse) and daughter Marianna. Bob and Mary also have two grandchildren, Evan Tanguy (Mark's son) and Tate Tanguy (Sam's son). - CUlver Citizen July 25, 2022

    The bride-elect is the daughter of Mrs. Ruth Elizabeth Vallee and of Justice Paul Vallee. Now pursuing a career as and actress in New York, she was graduated form SC, where she affiliated with Delta Gama and Zeta Phi Eta
