Walter Vonnegut, Former Actor Dies at Lake Maxinkuckee Home
 
Walter Vonnegut, former actor, musician and member of a prominent Indianapolis family, died Monday 
night at his home on Lake Maxinkuckee near Culver after an illness of three years' duration. 
He was 56 years old. Mr. Vonnegut was a son of Clemens Vonnegut, now dead, former president of the 
Vonnegut Hardware Company and member of the family which settled in Indiana in 1835. 
Members of the Vonnegut family had been going to Lake Maxinkuckee 51 years, and for the last three 
years Walter Vonnegut had made his permanent home at the lake.
Mr. Vonnegut was educated in Europe as a concert pianist and became interested in acting while 
studying there. 
He was first married to Marjorie Potts Vonnegut, daughter of Alfred Potts, Indianapolis attorney. 
The Vonneguts moved to New York for a time and Mrs. Vonnegut joined the Washington Players for 
several seasons.
Played In Broadway Hits. family home. Funeral Is Tomorrow After Stuart Walker closed his stock company 
at the Murat Theater, the Vonneguts returned to Indianapolis for a season and co-operated in a season 
of stock which starred Mrs. Vonnegut. 
Mr. and Mrs. Vonnegut later obtained a divorce. Mrs. Vonnegut later married Don Marquis, playwright and 
columnist who died several years ago. She died in New York three years ago.
Mr. Vonnegut became a character actor and played in several outstanding Broadway hits and roadtouring 
companies. His first pearance in Indianapolis was as a support character to Pauline Lord in Eugene 
O'Neill's "Strange Interlude," and he last appeared at English Theater in the Kaufman-Hart comedy, "You 
Can't Take it With You," in which he played the part of the father who made fireworks in the basement 
of the Sycamore In recent years he had been forced to retire from the stage because of ill health. 
He was a member of the Actors' Equity Association. 
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Rosalie M. Vonnegut Culver; two children a previous riage, Walter Vonnegut 
of Indianapolis and Mrs. Ruth Carroll of Belmont, Mass.; a brother, Anton Vonnegut of Indianapolis; a 
sister, Mrs. W. K. Stewart of Louisville, Ky., and two grandchildren, Daniel Lynn Carroll and Marjorie 
Carroll. 
Private funeral services will be at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning at the Easterday Chapel in Culver.
 
The body then will be brought to Indianapolis for services to be held at 3:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
