Albert W. Wagner and Henry Wanner of Chicago, Illinois were traveling up and down the Missouri and the
Mississippi River valley selling hardware Among the many items they offered for sale were several made of
malleable iron. At times they were unable to make deliveries when needed; and, more especially, they had
trouble in making delivery of a good quality of malleable iron, so they decided to pool their resources and
build a malleable iron foundry. They considered a number of locations, but the advantages of Terre Haute
were such that it was chosen. Among those advantages were the abundance of coal and water, the ideal
railroad facilities radiating in all directions, and abundant labor. They employed a young foundryman, Leonard
M. Eyke, to build and operate the foundry, and incorporated as the Terre Haute Malleable and Manufacturing
Corporation. By 1906. the necessary buildings, a melting furnace, annealing ovens, together with the equipment
and machinery, were completed and in operation. The original capacity was about 150 tons of malleable iron
castings a month. Among the first customers were B. F. Avery & Sons, Louisville, Ky.; Blount Plow Company of
Evansville (now the Burch Plow Company), and Hartman Company of Vincennes, Ind. In those days the principal
malleable iron users were the railroad car builders, buggy and wagon makers, harness hardware, horse-drawn farm

FEBRUARY 8, 1933 — A. W. Wagner, Cottager, Dies At Decatur, Ill.
A. W. Wagner, well known summer cottager, died Feb. 4 at his home in Decatur, Ill. of
heart trouble.
Funeral services were held at the home on Tuesday.
He is survived by the widow who is just out of the hospital following an operation.
The Wagners have had a cottage on the East Side of Lake MaxinKuckee for years and
during that thime have made a wide circles of friends who will regret to learn of Mr.
Wagner's passing
