Joseph F "Joe" Schweidler  

Here is Joe using his high pressure salesmanship on a customer, and you may be sure that before he got through using some hos his well know humor on the customer he bought the quart of oil.

Joe did alot of traveling and tried out a number of lines of business before he setlled in Culver and became the owne of the Lake Shore Garage. He was born in Neifeld, Austria, and after working a few months in Germany as a bellhop, he came to America alone, though only a lad at the time. He had two brothers in Illinois, so went to chicago.

Mr. Schweidler went to various parts of the country, once as far as California, and engaged in various lines of business, including farming and minig, in attempt to orient himself. He came to Culver in 1918, to assist his brother, Fritz, in the garage business during the latter;s ill health. After engaging in other work for a few years he became associated with his brother as a partner, and in 1925 became the sole owner of the business he now operates. SInce that tome he has enlarged and inporoved the building, as well as increasingt the volume of buisnees and service rendered to the mortoring public.

1963 Jul 31 To Observe Golden Wedding Anniversary


Mr. and Mrs. Joe Schweidler will observe their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday, Aug. 4, from 3 to 5 p.m. in their home at 418 Liberty St., Culver .

Mr. Schweidler and the former Lillian Garmathy were married Aug. 2, 1913, in Chicago where they resided for six years before moving to Culver in 1919. Mr. Schweidler owned and operated the Lake Shore Garage in Culver for 35 years until his retirement in 1954.

The Schweidlers have four children, Joseph F. Schweidler, Raleigh, N. C; Arthur B. Schweidler, Ogden, Utah; Helen J. Smith, La Habra, Calif.; and Robert Paul Schweidler, Pocatello, Idaho; who will all be present to host the open house in honor of their parents. The Schweidlers also have seven grandchildren, and an eighth grandchild died at the age of four.

No written invitations are being mailed, but friends, neighbors and relatives are cordially invited to attend the open house and greet this well-known couple on this happy occasion.

Joe Schweidler Family

Joe Schweidler was born in Austria August 3, 1890, but grew up in Hungary.

In December, 1905 at the age 15, he emigrated to the United States by himself. On arrival he could speak German, Hungarian, and Serbian but knew no English. He had very little cash but he dad have a train ticket to Chicago, Illinois where his older brothers Charlie and Richard lived. In Chicago a driver of a one-horse dray took him to the north side address only to find that his brothers had moved to Steger, Illinois. By that time he had only 5 cents left. The drayman took the clothes he was carrying as collateral and bought him a ticket to Steger. There he started walking the steets, not able to converse with anyone, and hoping he would find his brothers. By chance, he was passing a barber shop he saw Charlie in the chair getting a haircut. It was a most happy coincidence.

On August 2, 1913, he married Lillian Gyarmathy. They lived in Chicago, Illinois, then Cleveland, Ohio and Burr Oak. In 1919 they moverd to Culver .

Joe was an experienced mechanic and a skilled welder. He set up a machine shop with his younger brother, Fritz, who owned the Lake Shore Garage opposite the Culver Depot.

In 1927, with the help of "Bill" (W.O.) Osborn and the Culver State Exchange Bank, he bought the garage from Ftriz. He operated it for 33 years [c1960], building up a good buiisnees and an excellent reputation in the Culver community.

Joe was a strong, atheltic man. Twice he swam across Lake Maxinkuckee. He loved to golf and shot in the 70's. He was a member of Henry H. Culver Masonic Lodge #617.

Joe and Lillian reared four children; all graduated from Culver High School. The eldest Joe, born in 1914, became a lawyer and lived in North Caroline at the time of his death in 1976. Arthur born in 1922, lives in Ogden, Utah. Helen, now Mrs. John Smith was born in 1920 and lives in Denver, Colorado. Robert born in 1922, lives in Houston, Texas. Lillian died in 1968.

Joe married (second) Theresa Heuer, an early friend of the family. She was born August 23, 1895 in Hungary and had come to the United States in 1912.

In 1974 they moved to Leesburg, Flordia where they now (1985) live in the retirement community of Hawthorne. Paul Newman also is living there and they frequently meet to reminisce about former Culver happenings and mutual Culver friends. - Edna Reed.

Mrs. Schweidler Dies In Tucson

Mrs. Lillian Schweidler, 418 Liberty St., Culver died at 11:00 a.m. Feb. 1 at the Glen Manor Nursing Home in Tucson, Arizona. Mrs. Schweidler who was 74 years old suffered a stroke Dec. 12 1967 while on vacation with her husband.

She was born Jan. 29, 1894 in Austria-Hungary to Simon and Katherina (Phil) Gyarmathy. She had resided in Culver since 1919. She was married Aug. 2, 1913 at Chicago to Joseph Schweidler who survives.

Other survivors are three sons, F. Schweidler, Raleigh, N.C., ' Arthur V. Schweidler, Ogden, Utah and Robert T. Schweidler, Culver ; one daughter, Mrs. Helen J. Smith, Fullerton, Calif; two sisters, the Misses Catherine and Barbara Garmathy, Tucson, Arizona; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5 at the Easterday-Bonine Funeral Home with Rev. Charles L. Haney officiating.

Eastern Star memorial services were conducted by the Emily Jane Culver Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, of which Mrs. Schweidler was a member, at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Burial was in the Culver Masonic Cemetery. - Culver citizen
