Charles H. Barnes, Veteran Building Contractor, Dead

With Brother, Currie Barnes, He Built Local High School

Charles H. Barnes. 80, well known building contractor, and pioneer resident, died at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday evening at Memorial hospital.

In failing health -for some time he had been seriously ill only the past few days.

Born March 22, 1868. in this city, he was the son of John E. and Elizabeth Jane Bates Barnes. He entered the genera! contracting business about 40 years ago and maintained his offices on Fifth street for a nmber of years. In 1930 his sons Charles H. Jr. and John E. Barnes became associated with him in the work.

In Real Estate Recently

Among the work for which he held contracts during his years of activity here were the local high school building, down town business buildings, and a number of buildings in the southern part of the state. in the past few years, he had devoted his time to real estate activities.

Survivors are the wife. Mae DeWeese Barnes: one son. Charles H. Jr.. city: four grandchildren; one sister. Mrs. George Funk, Social Circle. Ga.: two brothers: James I. Barnes and Benjamin F. Barnes city. A son. John E. Barnes, died July 27, 1942.

The body will be taken from the Chase-Miller chapel to the hime, 600 front Street, at noon today where friends may call, byr it is asked that flowers be omitted.

final rites will be at the residence at 1:30 friday, with the reverend francis Reese, of Nappanee, formerly of here, officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at Mr. Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Mae Barnes Dies; Rites Set For Monday

Mrs. Mae B. Barnes, 81, of 3031 S, Pennsylvania Ave., a prominent local woman, died at 2 p.m. Friday at Memorial Hospital here.

Mrs. Barnes was president of the YWCA from 1924 to 1930, resident, of the Neal Home Joard from 1925 to 1945, president of the Cass County Welfare, Association from 1946 to 1958, resident of the Logansport Art Association in 1928 and president of the First Mother's Study Club in 1921. She was a deaconess of the Calvary Presbyterian church from 1955 to 1958.

Born Jan. 31, ,1878, in Bradord, Ohio, she was the daughter of Allen Cornell and Jane Coate DeWeese. Her marriage Dec. 30, 1906, was to Charles H. Barnes, who died in 1949.

Surviviors include one son, Charles H. Barnes of 2928 High St.; two grandsons, John ,E, Barnes of 2527 E. Broadway and Thomas C. Barnes of Indianapolis; two granddaugnters, Mrs. Patricia B. Moder of Chicago and Mrs. Ann B. Dramm of LaJolla, Calif.; nine great-grandchildren One son, John E, Barnes, also preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Calvary Presbyterian Church. The Rev Irving' Phillips will officiate and burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Kroeger Funeral Home from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today

Charles H. Barnes, 60, 2928 High Street Rd., a local real estate investor, died at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday at Billings Hospital in Chicago, Ill. Born May 10, 1909 in Richmond, Va., he was the son of Charles H., Sr., and Mae B. DeWeese Barnes. At one time he was associated with his father and brother in the contracting business in Logansport. He was a graduate of Logansport High School and attended Indiana University. He was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge and the Indiana Realtors Association. His marriage was In 1935 In Logansport to the former Joy Smith whi survives. Surviving with the widow are a son, Thomas, Indianapolis; two daughters, Mrs. Eugene Dramm, La Jolla, Calif.; and Mrs. Patricia Moder, Chicago; six grandchildren: and one nephew, John E. Barnes, III, 2527 E. Broadway. He was preceded in death by a brother, John E. Barnes, II. private funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the McCloskey-Hamilton-Kahle Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Felty officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Josephine S. “Joy” Barnes, 96, Culver , formerly of Logansport, died at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, in Miller’s Merry Manor, Culver .

Born July 4, 1911, in Logansport, she was the daughter of Walter Smith and Ellen M ullen Smith. She was married to Charles H. Barnes, Jr., who preceded in death in January 1970.

Mrs. Barnes was a 1928 graduate of Logansport High School. In her active years in Logansport, she was a member of Psi Iota Xi sorority and volunteered at Memorial Hospital for the Mary Dykeman Guild. She also served on the Neal Home Board of Directors for 35 years. Mrs. Barnes was a former member of Calvary Presbyterian Church.

Joy was a one-time Logansport City Golf champion and runner-up champion in the Logansport City Tennis Tournament.

Surviving are one son, Thomas C. Barnes and his wife, Jean, Culver ; two daughters, Patricia Moder, Chicago, and Ann Barnes, La Jolla, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

One sister, Tamar Discher, preceded in death.

Burial will be private.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday in Kroeger Funeral Home.
