John E. Barnes & James I. Barnes Family  

After the coming of the railroad in 1883-1884, a flagstop station was established on the west shore of Lake Maxinkuckee, across the road from what is nor 670 West Shore Drive. This station was there to service the Arlington Hotel. An annes to that hotel was located at what is now 704 West Shore Drive.

In 1894, the year Culver Military Academy was founded by Henry Harrision Culver , a contract was awarded to John E. Barnes of Logansport to construct a brick barracks, the first permanent building on the campus. The cornerstone for this building is dated May 16, 1895.

John E. Barnes, in order to have a place to live while building this barracks, purchased the Arlington Hotel annex. He continued to build for the Academy and with his wife Elizabeth Jane Bates Barnes, maintained this home at what is now 704 West Shore Drive.

A son, James I Barnes, in the meantime joined his father in the construction business. As the father grew older, this son, James, took over the business and continued the construction of many buildings built at the Academy in subsequent years. The Barnes Construction Company built the First United Methodist Church and the post office at Culver and Plymouth. Over the years Barnes Construction Company, with the home office in Logansport, expanded with offices in the midwest and western United States.

After the death of John E. Barnes in 1914, James I. and his wife Emily Christine Engelbrecht Barnes, acquired the home on the west shore, which he maintained as s summer home for his family during his lifetime. Three brothers of James: George, Curry and Charles owned summer cottages on the lake at various times. Presently, a grandson of Charles Thomas Barnes owns a cottage on the east side.

James I Barnes died in November of 1956 and the summer home became the property of the seven Barnes daughters: Lucille Drompp, Emily Studebaker, Doris Hills, Marjorie Sparling, Clara Medland, Betty Muehlhausen, and Virginia Kniesley, all of whom had grown up at this summer home the lake. All seven daughters and their families have owned property on the lake over the years. Summers at the lake have been a part of the lives of the subsequent grandchildren, and great grandchildren and great-great=grandchildren.

At present the "family" home at 704 West Shore Drive is owned by the youngest daughter, Virginia Barnes Kniesley, and her family as a summer home. Another daughter Betty Muehlhausen , and her husband Gordon, own and reside year around at 2074 East Shore Drive. A third daughter, Marjorie Barnes Stallings, and her husband Floyd, reside at 784 West Shore Drive. And the residence at 274 South Shore Drive is owned and occupied by Frederick G. Drompp the husband of Lucille Barnes Drompp, deceased.

So you can see that the family of John E. Barnes and James I Barnes is probably on of the oldest, continuous families to own property on Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver - Judy Guild.

One of the many post offices that James I Barnes Co. constructed was the Warren Post Office - Warren, Bradley, Arkansas - on the page this is found about James I. Barnes: The construction of the Warren Post Office was awarded to Mr. James I. Barnes of Barnes Building in Logansport, Indiana, on October 10, 1935, and the notice to proceed was dated October 29, 1935.The Supervising Architect for the project was Louis A. Simon, who did extensive design work on federal buildings.


Elks Lodge - 430 North Street was constructed in 1907 for the Logansport Lodge, No. 66 of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks by their contractor, James I. Barnes.


The Barnes Flats - 516 E. Market - James I. Barnes, a local builder with a reputation for fine buildings, constructed the Barnes Flats to serve as residential dwellings in 1915. The fine and resilient masonry work throughout the structure is no surprise, as masonry was a specialty of the Barnes family. John E. Barnes, father of James, was a stone mason who emigrated from England in the late 1800's. Though showing significant deterioration due to vacancy, the Barnes Flats remains a notable example of Classical Revival architecture. Seemingly designed from a pattern book, the building showcases three classical column orders, the Tuscan, Ionic, and Corinthian, in the columns and pilasters supporting the two-tiered portico that dominates the front facade. Carved limestone details appear in the projecting cornices at each level, and small arched and square windows allow light into the attic level. The building has a tan colored brick facade with a rock-faced limestone foundation.

I.O.O.F. Building - 200 S. 5th Street - In 1908, sixty-one years after their organization in 1847, Logan Lodge No. 40 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) erected this four-story building at the southeast corner of Fifth and North Streets for just over $40,000. Like the Elks Lodge, the Odd Fellows employed the leading Logansport designer and builder, James I. Barnes, to construct their meeting space. Built at the height of secret society pop ularity in the U.S., this Temple housed at least six different orders. Today, the building stands vacant awaiting rehabilitation. Barnes designed a Classical Revival style structure emphasizing a projecting central bay at the second and third floors, and a wide eave with projecting cornice supported by decorative dentils and brackets. Windows on the second and third levels feature flat arch limestone lintels with modified keystones and the corners of each facade feature brick pilasters with broad, stylized limestone capitals.

- The school board went to Logansport Thursday where at the office of J.E. Crain the contract for erecting the new school building was let to James Barnes. Just what day excavating will begin has not been determined

James I. Barnes, the building’s contractor, was no stranger to the building trade as well.Born in Logansport, Indiana, in 1872, he eventually became a well respected builder and architect in the Logansport area.The range of buildings he worked on was quite vast, ranging from residences and apartments to commercial buildings, churches, and fraternal lodges. However, the fact that he went into architecture is not surprising given the fact that his father, who was born in England, was a builder for over fifty years, and his grandfather was a stonemason.The Warren Post Office was not the only building that Barnes and Simon worked on together. They also designed and built the Auburn Post Office in Auburn, Washington

James I. Barnes was mayor of Logansport, from 1918 to 1921
