NORTH VERNON — Doris Barnes Hillis, 102, a resident of Switzerland County and formerly
of Indianapolis, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009.
She was the widow of Franklin Hillis, who died in 1996.
She was born in Logansport on Dec. 12, 1906, the daughter of
James I. Barnes and Emily Englebrecht Barnes.
She is survived by a son, James F. Hillis, Vevay; two daughters, Janet H. Pence, Columbus,
and Jane H. Osborne, Vevay; and one sister,
Virginia B. Kniesly, Logansport.
A private memorial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Logansport.

CRAWFORDSVILLE — H. Franklin Hillis, 88, Roachdale, died at 2:45 a.m. Sunday at
his son's home in Roachdale.
Born Aug. 31,1907, in Logansport, he was the son of Robert C. and Ida Mae Owen
Hillis. On Dec. 25,1931, he was married in Logansport to Doris Barnes, who survives.
Mr. Hillis was a retired hotel owner. He had owned and operated Barnes, Dearborn
and Puritan Hotels in Indianapolis and France Hotel in Paris, III., until his retirement in
1965.
After retirement he lived in the Florida Keys, Dade City, Fla., and Alamo, Texas.
He was a Logansport High School graduate who attended Indiana University and
George Washington Law School in Washington, D.C.
Also surviving are one son, James F., Roachdale; two daughters, Janet H. Pence, Columbus,
and Jane H. Osborne, Arlington, Va.; one sister, Mary Louise Brant, Dade City, Fla.; 12
grandchildren; and 13 greatgrandchildren. Two brothers, Robert O, and John T.
Hillis, and one sister, Elizabeth Taylor, preceded in death.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Hunt & Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mark
Powell officiating. Cremation willfollow.
Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
