Death Of Local Man Is Shock

The community was shocked yesterday by the death of William T. Studebaker, widely known in business and club work in Logansport manager of the Logan theater for the past 25 years.

His death occurred about 6:30 a.m. Saturday at his home on US 24 at the east edge of the city. He was 55 years old.

In ill health, he ended his life in the den at his home. Mrs. Studebaker found-him several minutes: after hearing a sound, that she thought was a door s lamming. There was a b ullet wound in his right temple, and a 22 pistol; which ih owned, beside the body.

He left no note and had made no threat on his life, but was known to have been deeply concerned about his health.

Mr. and Mrs. Studebaker had attended a Baptist church meeting Friday evening, and Saturday morning, as was his custom, had arisen first and made a pot of coffee, appearing to be in normal spirits.

The tragedy brought instant expressions of sorrow from hundreds of friends of the Studebakers, who say the deceased probably was as popular as any Logansport citizen.

"Bill" To Acquaintances

A native of Logansport and practically a lifelong resident, the deceased was "Bill"' to everyone who had contact with him and his mood was universally friendly and interested.

Mr. Studebaker was born Februrary 23, 1902, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Studebaker. He graduated from Logansport high school in 1919 and played on the basketball teams of 1918 and 1919. He later graduated from the University of Illinois.

He became associated with an airline at Chicago, and was traffic manager at Chicago for first Western, then American Airlines.

He and Emily Barnes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James-1. Barnes, were marriedon August 31, 1932. He returned to Logansport soon after to take over direction of the Logan theatre. The theatre was to have been reopened today after being closed for the summer. The reopening is being delayed until a later date.

Active For Youth

Mr. Studbaker was a member of Phi Gamma Delta, college fraernity; the Kiwanis club and Variety club. He was active with the youth committee of Kiwanis, earlier had assisted in organization of Little League here He, was affiliated with the Baptist church.

Survivors are the wife and one son, William Gordon Studebaker, who is 13; a number of nieces and nephews.

The body was removed to the McCloskey-Hamilton chapel.

Coroner M. B. Stewari made an investigation and said there will be no inquest.

Services are to be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from, the McCloskey-Hamilton chapel conducted by the Rev. M. L. Robinson. Burial will be at Mt. Hope.

Friends may call at the chapel after 2 p.m. Sunday.

Memorial services for Emily A. Studebaker, 94, of Homestead, Fla., formerly of Logansport, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel at Mount Hope Cemetery.

She died at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, in Florida.

Born Oct. 8, 1904, in Logansport, she was the daughter of James I. and Emily C. Englebrecht Barnes. On Aug. 31, 1932, she was married to William T. Studebaker, who preceded in death.

Mrs. Studebaker was a homemaker. Surviving are two grandsons, William Studebaker and David Studebaker, both of Miami, Fla.; a daughter-in-law and her husband, Marty and Pat Fleming, Miami, Fla.; four sisters, Doris Hillis, Columbus, Marjorie Sparling, Culver , Betty Muehlhausen, Plymouth, and Virginia Kniesly Logansport; and several nieces and nephews.

A son, William G. Studebaker, and two sisters, Lucile Drompp and Clara Medland, preceded in death.

The Rev. Donald Ruhl will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Friday in the cemetery chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
