"Herb" D. Herbert & Laurie Rentschler



Herbert Dale Rentschler, born March 27, 1944 in Hamilton OH, youngest of 3 sons born to Marjorie and Herbert Rentschler.


He attended Miami University, Oxford, OH, receiving a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1966, and was a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.

Herb entered basic training in the Air Force Reserves following graduation and served on the Fire/ Crash Rescue Unit.

Upon completion he returned to Chicago to marry college sweetheart Laurie Ann Sundstrom of Flossmoor, IL, on Dec 28, 1966, and went to work for Youngstown Sheet and Tube company in Whiting, Indiana where Herb quickly moved up to become the youngest Superintendent of the hot mill in the company’s history.

Herb’s most important career began with the birth of his son in 1969, followed by two daughters in short order.

In 1973 he moved the family from their Chicago Heights home to Flossmoor the same day following his youngest child’s birth, and they remained in their home on Marston Lane for the next forty-two years. He quickly put his Air Force training to good use by joining the Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department, serving faithfully for almost 30 yrs and rising to the rank of Captain.

He also went to work for Sundstrom Pressed Steel Company of Chicago, and there he remained for his entire career.

He served two terms as trustee for the village of Flossmoor, and was a regular member of Flossmoor Country Club for 51 years.

Herb is survived by his wife, Laurie, of Flossmoor, brother Fred Rentschler (Lynne) of Franklin, OH, brother Bill Rentschler (Patty) of Hamilton, OH, his son C. Todd Rentschler (Sudarat) of Seattle, Lisa Casey (Christopher) of Flossmoor, Jennifer Garvey (Liam) of St John, IN, and seven grandchildren (Hannah, Ryan, Emily, Anna, Ella, Reilan, and Rowan).

A Celebration of Herb’s life will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Flossmoor Country Club from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, with a brief ceremony at 5:15 pm.
