Miriam Hizer Reid, 98, formerly of Grass Creek and Logansport, Ind., passed away at 9:45 p.m.,
Fri., Oct. 31, 2014, at Hickory Creek of Winamac. She spent the last four years at Pleasant
View Rest Home in Winamac.
Born June 1, 1916, in Worthington, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Edna
(McCreery) Hines. On May 5, 1940, she married Frederick Daniel Hizer. He preceded her in death
on April 3, 1972.
She later married Glen Reid, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 8, 2002. She also was preceded
in death by infant daughter Mary Lynn Hizer.
She graduated as salutatorian from Worthington High School. Miriam earned her bachelor’s degree
from Indiana State University and her master’s degree from Ball State University.
Miriam was a music and business teacher at Grass Creek School starting in 1939. She retired from
Caston School Corporation in 1977 after 34 years of teaching and touched the lives of thousands of
people.
Miriam loved music and enjoyed playing the piano, organ and violin. She played at graduations, weddings
and funerals and played accompaniment for school plays and music contests. She sang in and also directed
local and state church choirs.
She was a member of Grass Creek United Methodist Church, Delta Kapppa Gamma Society for Women Educators,
charter member of Logansport Shrine Guild, 50-year member of Order of Easter Star and charter member of
20th Century Extension Homemakers Club, among others.
Survivors include her children Alan Hizer (Gloria) of Winamac, Joyce Meurer (Raymond) of Rowayton, Conn.,
and the Rev. Cynthia Hizer of Covington, Ga.; brother Warren Hines of Worthington; nephews Ed Hines (Peggy)
and David Hines (Peggy); and grandchildren Kirk Dooley (Tiffany), Julia Wagner (Jason), Emily Hizer, Daniel
Hizer (Rachel) and Andrew Jubera. She also is survived by great grandchildren Molly, Amelia, Annika, Calista,
Layla, Trevor, Jackson, Colten and Micah.
Visitations will be Fri., Nov. 7, 2014, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Harrison-Metzger-Rans Funeral Home, 123 E.
Main St., Kewanna, where there will also be an OES Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on
Sat., Nov. 8, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
The service will be held Sat., Nov. 8, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Grass Creek United Methodist Church with Pastor David
Sommers officiating, followed by burial at Grass Creek Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grass Creek United Methodist Church and/or the National Multiple Sclerosis
Association.

Services for Glen Arthur Reid, 96, 7 Fountain St, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday
at Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel.
He died at 1:30 pm Sunday, Sept 8, 2002, in his residence.
Born Dec. 28, 1905, in Logansport, he was the son of Charles Glen Arthur Reid and Goldie Terrell
Reid.
On June 24,1927, in Michigan, he was married to Hazel Shriver, who preceded in
death. On July 27,1974, in Grass Creek, he was married to Miriam Hines Hizer, who
survives.
A 1925 graduate of Logansport High School, he played four years of basketball
Under coach Clifford Wells.
He was employed at AA Roofers as a roofing contractor since 1927.
He was a member of Grass Creek United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Tipton Masonic lodge No.
33 F&AM, a member of Murat Temple, a 40 year member of Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne, a past
president and member of the Logansport Shrine Club and a charter member of the Logansport Shrine Third
Wheel Patrol.
Mr. Reid also was a member of SPEBSQSA (Barbershop Quartet Singers of America) and served two terms as
president of the Cardinal District of Barbershop, which includes Indiana and Kentucky. He also served on
the International Board during that same time.
He sang with the Shrine Club Minstrel and many other local musical groups.
He was very proud of the fact that he helped build the Little White House at Grissom.
Also surviving are one brother, Harold Reid, Logansport; three step-children, Alan F. Hizer and his wife
Gloria, Winamac, Joyce Meurer and her husband Ray, Rowayton, Ga, and Cynthia Hizer, Covengton, Ga; five
step-grandchildren, 1st LT Kirk Dooley, United States Marine Corp, San Diego, Calif, Julia Wagner, Cincinnati
Ohio, Emily McClure and Daniel F. Hizer III, both of Winamac, and Andrew Jubera, Asheville, N.C.; one
stepgreat-granddaughter, Molly McClure, Winamac; two sisters-in-law, Marian Reid, Logansport, and Juanita Reid,
Fort Wayne; one brother-in-law, Harold Wilson, Lucerne; eight nieces; and seven nephews. Four brothers, Wilbur,
Raymond, Ross and Jack Reid; and three sisters, Louise Wilson, Zonnie Reid, and Jane Reid preceded in death.
The Rev. Cheryl Stratton will officiate at the services.
Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Gundrum Funeral Home, where a Masonic service will be held at 7
p.m, followed by a Shriner's walk-by, and one hour before the services Thursday in the cemetery chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grass Creek United Methodist Church and
