David Hughes, Age 5, Drowns In Lake After Falling Through Ice

David Judge Hughes, five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E Hughes, who have a summer home on the East Side of Lake Maxinkuckee, was drowned last Wednesday afternoon in the lake when he fell through the newly frozen ice.
The child had been playing in the front of his home and it is believed he was attracted on to th e ice by ducks that were along the fringe of the ice that extended part way out on the lake.

When his mother missed the youngster a thorough search was started and his little wagon was found on the shore of the lake.

Lloyd Wilson, Charles Cowen and Howard Oberlin broke their way through the ice in a boat until they came to a hole in the surface. There in about seven feet of water that found the body near the surface, bouyed by air under the boy's heavy coat. Attempts to resuscitate were futile.

New releases to out-of-town papers were incorrect in several items, Mr. Hughes states in pointing out that special credit should have been given to Lloyd Wilson for his fine and prompt assistance.

David Was born here Oct. 26, 1940 and had spent all of his life in Culver and at the family's winter home in Flordia. The parents survive.

The body was taken Friday to Indianapolis for cremation and the ashes will be taked to the Hughes winter home at Destin, Flordia. - Dec 19, 1945 Citizen
