Robert L Haig, who three years ago became a permanent resident of Culver at 2358 East Shore Lane after spending spending several summers at Lake Maxinkuckee, has become sales manager of Hand's Sft Water Service at 220 W. Jefferson St. Don Hand, born and reared in Culver started the buisness in 1947.

Bob Haig will devote his full time to the Jonco line, a homeowned water softner manufactured in Fort Wayne, which eliminated the iron in water. The water in this area is 15 to 25 grains hard - exceedingly high.

Mr. Haig states that savings between $150 and $200 can be saved each year in detergents and deterioration of plumbing and wearing apparel through the use of the household appliance he now sells. As you will note in the ad in this weeks Citizen a free water analysis is avaibale

Robert Haig, called Bob by his many friends, is a personable native of Terre Haute. He and Mrs Haig permanent resident of Culver at 2358 East Shore Lane three years ago after spending spending several summers at Lake Maxinkuckee

Bod though he had retired from business in Auguts 1956 when he sold his big chaim of 17 millinery stores located from New York to Texas. He had begun to retire in 1949 but the urge to remain active has since become to great.

Buring his yyears as a cahin store tyscoon he maintained an office ic New York City but resided in Youngstown, Ohio. In the later city he dabbled in real estate and store leases with great financial success.

Mr. and Mrs Haig have a married daughter in Ohio and a son, Robert L. Haig Jr. who is a professor of English at the University of Illinois.

During the past year or so Bob Haig has extended his interests in Culver, demonstrating his enthusiastic faith in the community .

He is the owner of the Frosty Creme refreshment establishment on Lake Shore Drive which he leases to an operator.

      Writes New Book On Journalism in England
        The following story from The Chicago Tribune concerns the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Haig, Sr., of 2358 East Shore Lane, who is in residence in England and will not return to the United States until next August:

        Urbana, Ill., Nov. 21 — Prof. Robert L. Haig Jr., University of Illinois department of English, is the author of a new book on 18th century journalism in England to be published by the Southern Illinois University Press.

        The work is entitled, "The Gazetteer 1735 - 1797" and deals with the history of the then most famous daily newspaper published in England.

        Prof. Haig has studied the files of the newspaper it self and his book is illuminated with extensive quotations from its columns.

        More significant for the history of English journalism in his use of a group of manuscript records and accounts, discovered as recently as 1952, which provide a more fully documented report of the management and production of The Gazetteer than has hither to existed for any newspapers of the period. - - 7 Dec 1961 Citizen.


      Former Resident Dies
        Word has been received of the Aug. 16 Death of Robert L. Haig Jr., 70, professor of English Literature at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

        He was the son of Culver b usiness man and cottage owner Robert Haig. Sr.

        The deceased is survived by his wife Grace Haig; his sister Mary Mae McCelland of Rochester and 2 sons both of Bloomington, Ill. - Culver Citizen


    Mary Ann Haig
      ROCHESTER — Mrs. Mary Ann McClelland, 87, of Rochester passed away at 12 p.m., Tuesday, July 14, at Hickory Creek.

      On Jan. 11, 1928, Mary Ann was born in Terre Haute to Robert Louis and Lois Temple Haig.

      In Allen County, on April 3, 1966, Mary Ann married Robert Wayne McClelland. Together shared 35 years f life's adventures. Sadly he assed away on Jan. 9, 2001.

      An avid reader, her favorite books were True Crime authored by Ann Rule. Mary Ann served as a volunteer, for the Fulton County Literacy Coalition. She assisted as secretary and helped with coordinating the Annual Spell Bowl.

      A life long antique buff, Mary Ann enjoyed collecting and selling antique dolls and Victorian clothing. Earlier in life she enjoyed working in an antique shop in Marshall County near Burr Oak.

      Mary Ann will be lovingly remembered by: a daughter, Sally Ruth Feingold, a son, Steven Temple Feingold and wife Susan, two grandchildren: Erica Feingold and Loren Feingold, four great-grandchildren all of Niles, Ohio, many friends and associates from the Fulton County Library, and special friends Judy Case, Gordon and Ruth Bohs all of Rochester. Preceding Mary in death are her parents and husband.

      Private services will be held for Mary Ann McClelland.
