| This is a blown up photo of the
town park cabins of the late 1930's. |
This was the last remaining cabin on this property and was classified as
"utlity shed" and existed on this property till a few years ago
It is believed that theses were possibly moved up the hill, over Lakeshore
drive and up onto the property from the town park as the 1930- 1940 era
houses and buildings were moved and re-purposed very were demolished. |
 |
NOTE: It has just been recently said that these cottages were moved from the
Lakeview Hotel grounds so
it is assumed that these cottages were moved probably first to the town park
or was a part of the Town park property acquired from the railroad.
BUT so far there has been absolutely NO DOCUMENTATION of this its only theory:
Thus far for proof has been found if the were built soley for the town park or
if the were moved from the Lakeview Hotel grounds BUT nothing had been found
about what happened to the Lakeview Club cabins but there has been found
quips about rental cabins during the early perion of the railroad and Vandalia
Park, as well as tenting spaces.
The accounting of the Lakeview Hotel is:
In April 1929 it was acquired by the Culver Family. here is the announcement:
ACADEMY BUYS PROPERTY
The Culver Military Academy has announced that they have purchased the real estate
facing Lake Maxinkuckee known as the Lake View Hotel property. This gives the
academy a solid stretch from the Palmer House to the boat house. -
The News-Sentinel, Thursday, May 2, 1929
BUT this clipped section for the plat map of 1922 suggests that there were
numerous designated lots either for camping or where cabins existed on the
Lakeview/Vandalia Park Grounds. |

Ruthann Kersey lived in the big garage (red dot) that was
directly in back of the house the front part was converted into living
quarters; it was accessed via the alley off of Forrest Place or College
Avenue. I believe she lived ther till |
 |
There use to be rental cottages (they were round or octagan
shaped) on the property and through the 1960's and 1970's they were tore down slowly |
 |
 |
all that remained was the garage/apartment, 2 cottages and the
tool shed/cottage besides the main house. |

 |
Tho the 2 photos shows the front entry door in approximately the same lcation. -
It is presumed that the open areas of the refreshment stande were enclosed once moved
as to have more encolsed space and usage of the building - clicking on the photos will
allow a large view of each. |
Tho captured at differnet angles it is believed that the garage which has been
torn down since 2021 was the D. A. Bradley Refreshment stand and was moved from the
park to his residential property and repurosed into living quarters, garage and
storage area. |
